As I approach my big day, I have been overwhelmed with decisions – the dress for me, my bridesmaids, flowers, location, cake, tuxedos, menu, rehearsal – the bride to be knows the stress of planning the perfect day. One thing that should not be skimmed on is the photographer. I have had family members offer to be my photographer, and at first, it seemed like the simple solution. But then I attended my best friend’s wedding in Des Moines, and I found out that was the wrong answer!!

All the cameras that were set out for guests were NOT the tasteful candid shots you hope for – many had been taken by small children, and some cameras were not even used. She had about 30% of her pictures taken. In addition, the pictures from the big moments weren’t really that great.

When working with a photographer, he or she will also know how to position the members of the wedding for the most flattering angles – and that is something we would all like help with, isn’t it? The quality of the professional camera and lights and tripods can usually not be met with an amateur’s equipment.

Another compelling reason to use a professional Des Moines photographer is the finished product. This is perhaps the biggest day of your life, and a memory that you want to be able to look back on and savor. With a professional photographer, you are given the photos to select, often with a memory book put together. Professionals will have samples of their work – and some of the choices are amazing. Collages, frames, and photo albums will be a keepsake to pass from one generation to the next. No matter how good an amateur photo turns out, it just doesn’t have the same quality of a professionally printed photo.

Well, I have graciously accepted the offers from my family while explaining that I have decided to use a professional as my primary source. However, I explained that I can’t have too many pictures of my big day, and I want them to keep their eyes out for the things I know the pro might miss.
