While receptions at lunch or dinner time are still the most popular there are people who are having wedding receptions at other times of the day and often these are arranged to coincide with their honeymoon plans or other factors that make it more convenient to have a reception possibly in the morning or at brunch.
This also affects the type of catering and the costs involved in your wedding reception and can often be a lot more cost-effective to have your reception earlier in the day where different foods and alcohol are consumed and also where any after reception party might not be included in the wedding plans.
If you’re planning a wedding on a budget then it is well worth considering alternate times for your reception as a cost saving exercise while still adding a bit of variety and personalization to your wedding.
There are other factors that can also save you money by having your reception earlier in the day even to the extent of paying less for any musicians that you require as it will be at a time of day when there is less demand for their work and you can usually get it at a reduced rate.
Other things that need to be considered when determining what time you will have your reception include the season that you will be getting married in and whether you can rely on the weather to be suitable during that time of the year.
Once again you should keep an open mind and not stick to specific guidelines if you prefer to do something different or if your finances or personal situation dictate alternative preparations.
Something that people often remember when they go to a wedding reception is the food, whether it’s good or bad. When choosing your menu keep in mind that just because you have a favourite food it doesn’t necessary mean that all your guests will like it as well.
Yes, it’s your wedding but you are spending a lot of money so you want people to like what is being served.
It’s always a good idea to offer your guests a choice on what they would like to eat for your wedding reception People may have food allergies, vegetarian or religious limitations so this way they can choose what they would like to eat. A vegetarian choice would be a good alternative.
People are reluctant to eat what they are unfamiliar with so don’t be too adventurous.
Your guests are going to be wearing their best clothes and no one is going to want to eat anything that is messy or stains their clothes. It could well spoil your day if you or anyone else spilled food on your wedding dress you would not be happy and any stain could show up on your wedding photographs.
Get ideas from past weddings that you have attended and duplicate the things that you liked.
Along with all the variety that people are adding to their weddings these days is the fact that people are choosing various different types of receptions that best suit their needs and their personalities.

QUESTION:
Cheap alternative wedding dresses/gowns?
What are some good websites for cheap alternative wedding dresses/gowns?My fiance and I are set to get married at the end of November and she wants me to give her some examples of what she should wear. Keep in mind that our real wedding isn’t for a few years (in Greece; beach wedding) but this November is our courthouse marriage. I’d like it to be simple yet still kinda elegant.
It’s not so much that we’re on a budget, but more that it’s not necessary to buy an expensive or flashy dress for the courthouse wedding when we already have fancy attire for the real wedding.
If it helps any, she’s 5’3″, 34b cup, ghetto booty (for a white girl), slender, pale complexion, dirty blond/golden brownish hair.

ANSWER:
My best friend had a courthouse wedding. Her dress came from le Chateau. She bought it for around CAD. It was long, tight fitting, with a crochet-like overlay all the way down. Stunning. She has a similar body-type to your fiancee (short, slim, small on top, heavier in the back)Congrats!

QUESTION:
Alternative wedding dresses?
I’m looking for a wedding dress that is long slightly traditional, some white and tulle, but not too trashy or cheap and with a significantly “alternative” look to it as well. I’ve been looking online for a little bit now and a lot of the options seem kind of trashy-looking, i.e. the over-the-top mall-goth look or just too prom-y. So I guess what I’m looking for is classy but edgy. Does anyone know of any designers/websites that make dresses like this? I’ve also been looking in some local stores but they all seem to be the cookie-cutter white dress and I don’t have a good enough idea of what I want yet to have one made specifically, although that is an option – I’d just like to look at some that appeal to me before I put together something unseen. Anyway, thanks (:-
ANSWER:
i don’t know if you can get hold of it in the UK but the australian designer Lisa Ho does some BEAUTIFUL dresses. im hoping to get mine from her, as im looking for the same sorta thing you described. youll need to do alot of research cos her actual website doesnt really show the sorta stuff she does thats suitable for weddings.

QUESTION:
Where should I look to find an alternative-style wedding dress?
I am marrying soon, (summer 2010), and am searching for a dress that will suit my personal style. I do not want to wear a traditional styled wedding dress. I am leaning toward a vintage look, anything from 1920′s flapper to 1940′s-1950′s pin-up though I would consider other styles as well.
Thanks-

QUESTION:
Alternative Wedding Dress?
My fiance and I are eloping on a “spur of the moment” type of moment. We are going to Vegas in less than a month and I really don’t care too much about wearing a wedding gown. Any ideas about what else to wear?-
ANSWER:
A long cream coloured cocktail dress – backless and with a slit in the side of the skirt to show off some nice sparkly shoes. And a flower in your hair.Or a green/blue chiffon type dress (think J-lo).
PS – It sounds like so much fun eloping!!!! I should book a holiday to Vegas and get my boyfriend really drunk……….and conveniently pack a nice dress……..

QUESTION:
Is there any home alternative to preserving a wedding dress?
I don’t really want to pay over 0.00 to have mine preserved so I was wondering if anyone knew or had any ideas about preserving their own dress such as how to wrap it and in what kind of paper and more details???-
ANSWER:
You could try one of those “space bags” where you take the air out, via a vacumn cleaner hose and it sucks the air out and it flattens what ever is in there, thus, making moisture and dirt, not being able to get to it…I wish you well…

QUESTION:
Is a white prom dress a suitable alternative to a wedding dress?
I’ve seen on budget sites that white prom dresses can be a good alternative, do you think anyone would really notice? Here are some examples :http://www.zenhobo.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/white-satin-wedding-dress.jpg
http://media.onsugar.com/files/ons1/281/2817629/07_2009/b8/white-dress.jpg
http://www.prom-hairstyles.us/images/dress7464.jpg
I’m not really looking at any of these, but I’m curious because these are less than 1/4 of the price of their wedding version counterparts. And as for a “wedding not the place to pinch pennies” I’d rather have a house and be debt free than pay 00+ for a dress I wear for less than half a day.
-
ANSWER:
I like the 3rd one (really pretty) take away the gloves and purse and it will look like a wedding dress. As long as you like prom dress better go for it….it’s your day and you will look and feel very pretty. Congrats!oh yeah, just a friendly tip from me to you…never wear a wedding/prom dress that shows too much skin, don’t want realitives looking were they shouldn’t

QUESTION:
Where can I find an “alternative” wedding dress?
We’re getting married! Oh why thank you, that’s so nice of you to say congratulations….Anyways, we’re saving money and getting all ready but my grandmother will not let me wear her wedding dress. Its very old and she simply wouldn’t feel ok with having it altered to fit my petite frame. That’s ok. What grandma says goes. So plan b) is to buy one, and we’re thinking of having a little fun and making things colorful on the big day.
SO. What is the consensus on where to find nice, colorful gowns? Thanks so much!

QUESTION:
Where can i get a scene/alternative dress for a wedding?
Hi!
Okay so i’m 15 years old and my cousins wedding is coming up soon. There is no “dress code” but my parents say turning up in skinnies and a hoodie would be very disrespectful and i agree. So i was wondering if anyone knew where i would find an emo/scene/ alternative style dress that would still be appropriate for a wedding.I’d prefer something around knee-length and it can be any colour (Even black :O )
Please feel free to leave website links and pictures! They would be most appreciated <3

QUESTION:
inexpensive, but not cheap-looking ideas for a simple low budget wedding???
My boyfriend and I want to have a nice elegant-looking wedding without the big price tag, yet we don’t want it to appear that we skimped on taste either..
We are limited on funds, so we have decided to envite about 15 people, which means about 30 total, if everyone brings a date. The wedding is going to be held outdoors…Hopefully it wont rain(it’s a winter wedding) but we have a mild climate in Nor. Cal..But any ideas on bridesmaid dresses, to what to serve at the recption..We already agreed on not to serve a big meal..Just a light menu. Also, I am not big on wearing a dress, I don’t wear them as a rule, because I dont like them..Is there an alternative to a wedding dress? Or should I wear one, because its tradition? And just bear it for one day?
-
ANSWER:
I would deal with wearing the dress for one day. It doesn’t have to be a foo-foo lacey thing, but a simple floor length dress suggests elegence.I’m in Nor Cal too, but we got married in a National Park so it was really inexpensive, although we did take everyone out to a nice dinner (had 16 people) so that’s where most of the expense came from.
Watch Rachel Ray’s 30 Minute Meals for great ideas on what to serve, or you can check out her show on www.foodnetwork.com. Then click on “food & recipes” and then go to 30 Minute Meals. She does a lot of hors d’vors type foods (not sure how to spell that

QUESTION:
Give me some alternative ideas for formal mens attire in a wedding party?
Dresses are simple cut and in coral from David’s Bridal. The men want an alternative to wearing a tux – outdoor wedding in hot weather.-
ANSWER:
The warm-weather tuxedo with a white jacket is a bit cooler than the standard black, although the tuxedo has never been day wear. There’s no easy way around it. It’s hard to be formal without wearing a jacket. Probably your best bet would be linen or seersucker suits, with light shirts and summery bow ties. Or, for that matter, you could put the groomsmen in straight ties and the groom in a bow tie. This pattern is especially nice:
http://www.bowtieclub.com/product/984/8
And if they complain, remind them that men used to play golf in July in tweed jackets twice as thick as modern jackets. And have plenty of icewater.

QUESTION:
Tea length wedding dresses?
Hi! I’m interested in a tea length wedding gown, but I haven’t been able to find any. We’re planning on having a beach or courthouse wedding (something very simple without all the unnecessary fuss), and I’m just wondering whether a tea length wedding dress would be suitable. Also, if anyone can find any (I’ve searched for heaps of designers, searched at their websites, bridal stores, online), like, a few examples, that would be great, but if you can’t, what type of alternative is there, like, what type of full skirted gown would be suitable for a beach or courthouse.
Thanks in advance.

QUESTION:
What are some alternative to wearing the long-line bras or a regular bra under my wedding dress?
I am wearing a strapless, very fitted wedding dress. The bodice has very stiff, thick material and has a ton of fabric detail. I am a large “B”, but have no need whatsoever to wear a bra underneath that dress…it would make it more uncomfortable, and as tight, thick, and stiff as it is, no one will know. I did try on a bra with the dress when I bought it and it made my 24 inch waist look like at 28 and it looked like the “gals” were about to pop! What else can I wear underneath bodice just in case the dress slips a little and for the sake of my poor seamstress? I’ve heard of “pasties” but am not sure whether they would do the trick or where to get them. Any ideas?-
ANSWER:
Your seamstress can add “cups” to your dress so you don’t need to wear a bra. The pasties I have used many times. They are basically band-aids put to hid your nipples. If you are lucky, you can find them at Target or Walmart. I’ve brought them from Target before but they don’t always carry them. Victoria’s Secret also carries them but they are pricier. The dress shops should also carry them. They hurt a little when you take them off though. My dress was so tight that there was no way I was coming out of it. Just make sure you bounce around when you try on the “finished product”!
Mine was so tight thought that the “ladies” were showing. I got a lot of comment about how good I looked but my husband said he had a hard time looking at me during the ceremony. I didn’t even notice how tight it was when I last tired on my dress because it was more of “OMG this is my wedding dress” and I was getting married that next week. So make sure to notice! But they weren’t going anywhere, that’s for sure. I just had more cleavage than I wanted. I’m a full C.

QUESTION:
Can anyone suggest resources to find wild, rock ‘n roll style, unusual wedding dresses?
Over & over I find a little bit here, a little bit there… I am looking for a really wild wedding dress – hopefully with some color or with some black – that still looks like a wedding dress. I am not so into prom-dresses-as-wedding-gowns. I’m hoping for a dress that was INTENDED as a wedding gown, but has a rock-n-roll vibe OR is very artsy or unusual in some fashion. I always planned to wear black but it isn’t going over well, so I am looking for wild alternatives! Any price range is okay, because I may have it custom-made, but I need ideas… Thanks to anyone who can help! I’m desperate! I think I might make a website of all the stuff I find when I’m done… Hopefully make it easier for the next “oddball bride.”

QUESTION:
How can I find the right wedding dress?
Selecting a wedding dress is proving to be a bit difficult. My wedding is in seven months and I’ve heard I should have my dress selected by now. I’ve been to a lot of wedding dress boutiques in the area and looked at wedding dresses online and NOTHING looks like it’s “me.” I’m turned off by the typical “wedding dress” styles and have started looking at alternatives, but either the dresses are too formal, not formal enough, or would look silly as a “wedding” dress. If it helps, here’s my wedding setting: I’m having my wedding in the summer on a boat that can hold 90 people. I’m having both the ceremony and reception on the boat, married by the captain. My fiance and I both agree that we’d like the wedding to be more like a “party we just happen to get married at” than a formal, stuffy event. I’m trying to find a dress that reflects this while also making a statement that it’s an important day.
I’m not quite sure how to continue my search. Help!
As far as designing it myself or paying someone else to design it for me, there are two problems: 1) I don’t know what I want and I’m counting on knowing when I see it, and 2) I don’t want to spend more than 0 on my dress.
Devil: Thanks so much for the links! They’re great!
I suppose I should clarify that I’ve already been to David’s Bridal twice and was turned off by them. They carried only the typical wedding dress styles and the lady I worked with seemed very distracted the entire time. I felt it was an awful experience; I’m avoiding them as much as I can.-

QUESTION:
Where can I get bridesmaid dresses?
I’m looking for an alternative to David’s Bridal as they simple don’t have quite what I’m looking for. Any other great sites out there which are reliable and legit?I’m specifically looking for a light or possibly dark silver tea-length taffeta bridesmaid dress.
Oh and any suggestions for colors that would go with silver bridesmaid dresses? My wedding is next July and semi-formal.
-
ANSWER:
Try searching for bridesmaid dresses on Shiny Orb. Shiny Orb isn’t a store by itself but it gathers the catalogs of a bunch of different online stores so you can search all the dresses in one place. For silver dresses, you can probably use the gray color filter. There’s also a style based search so you can narrow things down to just tea-length dresses. There are dresses from a whole bunch of different price ranges. You might also check the everyday dress section if you want something a little more wear-again. Good luck!

QUESTION:
small wedding ideas? what kind of dress?
I want to have an extremely small wedding. less than 5 people, just something small and intimate.any ideas?
and what’s and alternative to the traditional wedding dress….but doesn’t stray too far from it?
-
ANSWER:
I like the wedding dresses that are knee length, but have all the frilly and lacey things a wedding dress have, and are the same color as wedding dresses. They are more casual, very pretty, and yet still say “wedding dress”. My friend did this for her private wedding in Hawaii and it was great.

QUESTION:
Help me find this kind of wedding dress?
We are planning on getting married in late September or October of next year, and we want to do a very small justice of the peace ceremony. We aren’t yet sure what we’ll do afterwards, but we know that we don’t want a traditional wedding reception.I was thinking since the JOP ceremony is a little more casual, I’d wear a knee or tea length cream colored dress. I want something that’s fitted in the waist and hips, since I’m very hourglass shaped and a full or a-line skirt makes my behind look about 5 miles wide… haha. I’m having a hard time finding anything like this though… any ideas as to where I should look? Or any alternative dress ideas otherwise? Thanks in advance

QUESTION:
I want to wear a black wedding dress, but my bridesmaids will be wearing black too?
Will this be a bad idea for me to have the same color dress? I really want black. Our colors are orange and black. I was thinking about having them wear burnt orange dresses, but seriously – who looks good in orange?! Anyone have any ideas/alternatives?Thanks!
-
ANSWER:
Why not? It’s not unheard of for brides in white to have “all white” bridal parties. Many people think it looks very chic. So there’s no reason why you can’t do that with black. I assume you’ll be wearing a veil, and that your gown will be fancier than a typical ‘maids gown. And even if not, if the guests can’t tell who the bride is, why are they at your wedding?!P.S. Don’t listen to the uneducated kids on here who say you can’t wear black. A bridal gown can be a variety of colors. White gowns became popular in Western culture in the past couple of hundred years because they were meant to signify that you were rich and could afford a gown that you would wear only once. There was no such thing as dry cleaning! You can thank Queen Victoria for that trend. Before that, a wedding gown was a bride’s best dress…in any color. Poor brides typically wore their “Sunday Best”. So a white wedding gown is NOT a long standing “tradition”.
Also, in Asian cultures, *white* is the color of mourning. Brides traditionally wear RED in Asian weddings, and beautiful multicolored bridal outfits are worn for East Indian weddings. Colored and black bridal gowns are also very popular in Europe. It is very rude for people to make comments about your gown based on their own narrow opinions, even more so when they may be insulting your culture. Many brides who like Gothic culture and/or are having Halloween weddings also prefer black gowns. I hate white, look terrible and washed out in it (I’m a pale blonde), and didn’t want to look like a “McBride”. So I had a custom made gown in baby pink. It looked great and I loved it! It’s YOUR wedding, wear whatever you want!
I think you can definitely pull off wearing the same color dress. You can work the orange into your bouquets. You can consider working some white roses into yours if you like to differentiate it. You may also want to consider a red gown, with red roses. Also very chic and “Gothic” looking.
Good luck!
P.P.S. Here’s one example:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/kittyfeliz/sets/72157607202869114/
Offbeat Bride’s website has MANY examples of gorgeous dark purple and/or black gowns, if that is also something you might like.
Edit: Why do people KEEP suggesting a “white gown with black trim” when she clearly said that she wants a BLACK gown, NOT a *white* gown with black accents….

QUESTION:
Website for “alternative”/Natural wedding?
I’m looking to make my wedding fairly “hippie” and natural, but most of the websites out there seem to be geared toward the white dress/tux wedding. Does anyone have any ideas where I can get some good info/suggestions for this kind of wedding? Websites/books…etc?
Bless all of you for your wonderful links and ideas!-
ANSWER:
Someone else mentioned Threadhead creations, I just wanted to second it. A friend of mine recently got married, and both her and her sister’s (MOH) dress were from there. They were hemp silk and they were gorgeous! She actually designed the dress herself and they made it for her. I was surprised at how soft the fabric was. The only downside is it seemed to take a long time to get to her (to the point where she bought a backup off-the-rack dress just in case, two weeks before the wedding.) But in the end, it was there in plenty of time, and to my knowledge, didn’t need any alterations.

QUESTION:
Alternative Weddings Ideas (Cheap and Fast PLEASE)?
So, my boyfriend and I want to get married on January 16, 2008 (yep next month…)We want SMALL (just us, officiant and witnesses), CHEAP (he is saving, I am studying and working part time, nobody’s parents are making contributions, we want to keep costs to a minimum…ie, I am not going to be buying any wedding dress, wedding cape or flowers or anything, NO DESTINATION WEDDINGS…..AND I don’t WANT to PLAN WEDDING STUFF….)
We both agreed to wanting to get married in the great outdoors and selected a beach in Rhode Island….
but I want some alternate ideas, since maybe, the parking/road to the beach doesn’t get plowed, or we can’t find a brave officiant….
We know we could go to court, or Niagara Falls, but we want something BEYOND LOW KEY that reflects our style. (not those “wedding package style” at Niagara Falls)
I need some alternative wedding ideas…(other than court and Vegas styles….) We are LOW KEY….
Please, any help would be greatly appreciated!
We don’t want to travel at all! He lives in Rhode Island, and I live in Montreal. We want to keep the distance within a day trip genre…I would prefer to go down to his state for the actual “wedding”-
ANSWER:
Have it at someones home. You can have the wedding and reception all in the same place. Since it is just after Christmas you could use garland and Christmas lights to decorate with white Christmas lights. All the food you could do yourself if you have a Sam’s Club or Costco membership. Just make it finger foods. Enlist some friends to help out and get everything ready. Pre-order a cake or several cakes different sizes and then put them together and decorate it with ribbon and fresh flowers for the wedding cake.Simple, small and not a lot of money.

QUESTION:
Ever purchased a fake designer wedding dress?
I’m looking for a wedding dress, and have found a number of darling ones from Maggie Sottero, but I’m trying to find the cheapest alternative. BestDressPrice.com has the dresses I’m interested in, for 0-0, but I’m hesitant to buy a dress on the internet. Has anyone here used that website, or anything similar? Is the quality comparable? Same fabrics, etc?My main question is whether or not they use the same fabric — I want a chiffon dress, which I know is pricey, but as long as it looks and feels the same, I don’t care about the label!
Here’s the main one I’m considering:

ANSWER:
My gown is exquisite and was purchased at LightInTheBox.com It is a “Bonny” inspired gown in a Plus Size (like a 20-22). I took it to a local shop for the bustle and minor alterations (the gown was ordered to my specifications and it was about 90% dead on-the length is PERFECT). This tailor has been dealing with gowns for 23 years and she was extremely impressed with the quality of my Internet purchase from China.Yes, it was made in China at about 1/2 the cost of an original designer gown and there is no way the fabric is cheap. I’d already tried on the actual designer Bonny gown locally but could not afford the gown plus alterations. It would have run me almost ,000. The gown I purchased was so very minutely different in one or two areas that it was almost impossible to notice the difference, and it is my dream gown and just as high quality as the one I tried on.
Both of my cousins bought their gowns at LightInTheBox.com as well and my aunt, who’s purchased original designer gowns for two daughters, could not tell the difference either.
LightInTheBox has an impressive reputation for quality workmanship and they don’t advertise their gowns as “fakes” or “knock-offs.” Their gowns are inspired by designers, but they do not do or say anything to lead you into thinking you’re getting an actual designer gown. But the quality is exceptional.
So I would suggest looking at LightInTheBox too to see if they have “your” gown on their site. You won’t be disappointed!

QUESTION:
Is a wedding worth it?
First off I plan on marrying in two years, but the idea of throwing a wedding that will cost thousands of dollars AND having to pick out a venue, food, dj, etc seems like a pain to me. The only part that seems fun is creating the Save the Dates because I am a graphic designer. Also the idea of picking out a wedding dress is nice, although I dislike huge ballgown dresses.I’ve always wanted a small wedding but with the size of my fiance’s family thats going to be a lil hard since he has a huge family. My fiance and I are very casual people who dont like the idea of a huge formal wedding. It seems rather dull and we aren’t really into dancing so I think we would probably be bored at our own wedding. Is there any alternative besides eloping? I do want my parents and his parents and our close friends to be there.
Btw he’s in the military and when we get married we will be 21. Yes we are young but please don’t preach that its a bad idea to get married. We understand that a wedding isn’t important compared to the marriage we have that will last us our entire lives. Getting married and committing to a lifelong bond is very special to us, so all the glitz and glamor of a wedding isn’t important to us. BUT I do not want to get married in court or Vegas.
Right now we are 19 and we have been together since beginning of senior year back in high school. I am in college and he is well in the military which he plans to retire from.
@ Liz, wow I’m sorry you are such a bitter person. If you have nothing nice to say then don’t say anything. Looks like you have no manners and need to invest in some classes to not be such an ignorant childlike person.-
ANSWER:
My man’s parents got married in Vegas when they were really young. They went to Vegas as a couple and came home from Vegas as trio, if you know what I mean lol. They’ve actually been divorced from each other once or twice but they just keep on coming back to each other and get married again.Maybe you and your fiance could go to a beach somewhere with your parents and closest friends and get married by the ocean before going to dinner with them? The beach fits in with flowing dresses, not ballgowns, so that works out for you. You’ll already be somewhere exotic so you can just have your honeymoon right there. Then when you’re back home, you can have a party/reception and invite the rest of the family to celebrate your marriage. And you can design the invitations for the party yourself.

QUESTION:
What is easiest way to get elements of a designer wedding dress custom-made in size 0?
My cousin from France has this idea to have some elements of a designer wedding dress incorporated into a cheaper alternative. She likes the dress that Sassi Holford designed for a recent Royal Wedding but don’t have ,000. My wife loved the wedding dress she got from this online store (they custom fit brides) so she’s suggesting this dress at a fraction of the cost. http://www.kekopeanstitches.com/mermaid-wedding-gown.html Simone is having a late summer/fall wedding on a Caribbean island so we need to shop online as the wedding is being planned long distance using the Internet.
We want online stores that can custom fit brides since all the planning is being done online.-
ANSWER:
Go to a good, reputable seamstress with the picture of that dress and have them “copy” it. A seamstress can re-create the dress to your cousin’s specifications for a fraction of the cost and your cousin can even add elements of her own to it.

QUESTION:
I picked out bridesmaid dresses. Am I in the wrong?
My friends and I have known each other and have maintained a strong, mellow relationship for over 15 years. This year I am getting married. Originally, when we began looking at bridesmaids dresses, I included them in the process. It was great fun for all. The dress we selected was, as I felt, the best one we could find. I wasn’t super pleased with it, but it had been two months at that point. Not all the girls liked it, but all agreed they would wear it. A few weeks later one of my bridesmaids came to learn that the dress was discontinued. Not all of my girls would be ale to order the dress, and I was out of time. My fiance and I, and some of my bridesmaids scoured the internet for a replacement. I visited all the new options in person without my girls, but on one outing I found THE PERFECT dress (while looking at a different one). It was one that actually represented the theme of my wedding, and fell within parameters my girls were willing to subscribe to. (Price, where the waist fell, color, strap thickness, etc) I called my sister and asked her to try it on. She said she didn’t like the dress, but agreed to wear it. I called my one friend who is not on facebook and she came down immediately and tried it on. It was against my gut reaction to have them order without the rest of the girls, but 1) It was agreed early on, that no matter what, I had final say, and 2) the sales lady told me that I’d only have a small buffer between when they would arrive and my wedding. Essentially, it was go time. My one friend and my sister ordered their dress.
The dress looks ugly on line, and there were early grumbles about it, but I was assured, in their own words, they would put on their ‘big girl pants’ and wear it for the five hour event. The day they went in for their measurements, I had been in a car accident, and although I was physically OK, looking back on it, I think I must have been in shock. When I arrived I was greeted with a wall of sound spouting from the girls and two of their mothers. Three of the girls absolutely refused to wear the dress and had picked out an alternative. I did little more than to nod and ask to cancel the dress orders. The sales lady said ‘All sales are final.’ I said I had to think about it.
I went home that night and was miserable. This dress wasn’t discontinued, it was here, and what I wanted. My plus-sized BM said she wouldn’t fit in the dress, despite the fact I had seen her measurements and the sizing chart. She would fit in the largest size, but I choose not to mention it to her. I instead offered to pay for the extra material if needed to accommodate her size. I know that her complaint came from how the dress would make her feel. I had been most sensitive about her size over any other issue regarding these dresses. (to the extent of calling shops to ask if they offered samples in her size, and offering to go out of state with her in order to find the stores that do.) In the end, I feel like the dress I selected was no more form-fitting then her wedding dress from a few months before. At that point I was told we had previously established that Mermaid style dresses were out from the beginning. I do not recall that being part of the ‘don’ts’ list.
My whole party met at the dress shop the next day. I pulled my girls into the store next to the dress shop, so we could have a conversation about the situation out of the earshot of the sales lady. The only two options we had were to suck it up and wear the dress, or split the cost of the dresses. The question is… Is it reasonable to expect them to chip in?It is my wedding, we’re out of time. Why should the two girls that listened to me have to get stuck with buying two dresses each? Should I have to pay for them by myself? As a bride, I made a decision. These are the dresses I want. And I don’t just want them, but REALLY want them. As far as I’m concerned, decent and ego are the issues. But rather then making the girls who are making it difficult on everyone else pay for the dresses themselves. I suggested we split it 6 ways, as suggested by one of the girl’s mothers. 1 bride, five bms.
I would prefer that, in the end, they would wear the dress I picked out, and am so hurt, disappointed, and beguiled as to why they cannot see beyond the end of their noses, for only five hours of their life.-
ANSWER:
There are only 2 things that matter here.
1) You are the bride, you get final say.
2) In the US, bridesmaids pay for their own dresses. In the UK, the bride pays for the dresses. In no way do I see “splitting costs” as being an effective solution. Follow the guidelines based on the norm for where you live. These girls agreed to be in your wedding, and agreed that you get to pick the dress. You picked the dress, they can either wear it or attend as a guest.
Put your foot down, this is not worth letting them stress you out so much! You made a choice, and they can either abide by it or step down.

QUESTION:
Are these cheap wedding dress sites safe?
I’ve been browsing for wedding dresses (wedding = 11/11/11 hopefully) and have found some interesting things. I’m used to the normally decent/low prices I’ve found on eBay and Craigslist (some are, yes, used, but in near perfect condition). This being said…I’m finding K+ dresses for like 0-0 on sites like:
www.peridress.com, www.weddingdresschina.com, todayweddingdress.com, and xbridal.com to name a fewI’m well aware that most things that are too good to be true are. But I’ve also seen that if a designer gets mass produced, the price drops, esp if there’s 800 of them sitting in a Chinese warehouse. Even if it takes 1-2months to get here, are these dresses the same as the K+ ones (just missing a nametag perhaps?).
Has anyone bought from any of those sites or have you heard of them having a bad rep? Any suggestions or alternative websites GREATLY appreciated. I’ve been shopping at David’s Bridal and a couple other local places (I’m in Orlando FL, close to downtown).
Thanks guys!

QUESTION:
cOLOUR for wedding dress for dark skin?
ok, Im getting married and have been thinking about the dress. I dont want traditional white because I never wear anything white, just doesnt look good on me. I am dark skinned (light brown/ shade or so lighter than caremel) and was thinking a gold or olive (they seem to compliment my skin tone) dress as an alternative. What do you guys think? or are there other colours that would look good on me? did you wear white or something else? i really need ideasthank you
-
ANSWER:
thing is if you wear something other than white, ivory or champagne, you run the risk of another guest wearing the same color! everyone knows solid white / light colors is taboo to wear to a wedding but if you wear an olive colored dress, one of your guests may be in a similar color and unintentionally steal focus from you. so if I were you, I’d stick with champagne or gold.
