Fan Wedding Programs

Each season brings a wealth of disappointing events to almost every fan of college football. After all, there is only one champion. Dealing with disappointment is difficult for most, but is a way of life for football fans that happened to attend a school that dedicates itself to basketball. Disappointments are especially difficult for fans of those teams who are used to beating up on everyone else. Following upset losses, these fans find themselves in a dither and have trouble ordering their morning Starbucks.

It is reasonable to be disappointed after one’s favorite team loses. It is unreasonable to throw rocks at the ref’s car. Some folks have dedicated themselves to football and when football lets them down, they go into a deep emotional free-fall called Over Dedication.

Signs of Over Dedication include acute depression when the favorite team loses. Individuals endure this, but occasionally, entire states mope around for weeks and can’t function after their team lays an egg on the field. Ohio State, Penn State, Nebraska, Texas and all the major programs have failed in their own expectations at some point. The teams get over a loss, but the fan’s emotional attachment to the team suffers such damage that every day life becomes a challenge.

The San Andreas Fault might run through the Cal Bears home field, but the real earthquakes took place earlier this season thousands of miles away in central Michigan. The bomb crater that was the Big House is still smoldering. Not far away from that, in South Bend, IN more tremors are occurring as the once invincible Fighting Irish rose to achieve a stunning 1-7 mark.

The cloud that still hangs over Ann Arbor smells of smoke and stale beer. Michigan needs a good wind. Michigan fans need help. Recovering from the embarrassment of losing unexpectedly and doing so in front of a television audience is a difficult task. Following their spectacular loss to someone called Appalachian State the Blue and Maize treated their fans in the subsequent week to another great public failure – this time to a team dressed too poorly for words (Oregon). This proved too much to bear. Coping skills have gone undeveloped in Ann Arbor. Inability to deal rationally with football failure raises questions of judgment and mental balance – which curiously enough, applies to winners as well as losers.

The following is a 12 Step Plan for the Over Dedicated Fan. These steps are the keys to enjoying life after a particularly disappointing loss. These steps involve increasing levels of difficulty. So follow along, learn from the descriptions and regain control over your life! This plan has been crafted to work in one week, so don’t give up!

1. Admit to being powerless over my football team a” Admit that my life is unmanageable.

If you are in this position, your life is unimaginable. Witness those that paint body parts in team colors. Why would anyone do this – especially on cold autumn evenings? Most university infirmaries are half way houses dressed up as clinics where you can’t tell which half most of the residents are heading for. Inviting pneumonia isn’t good for the GPA and beer doesn’t make it better. Alums don’t handle this any better than students as many really didn’t want to graduate anyway.

Powerlessness over football passion is a threat to one’s well-being. Not spending the rent at the bar has always been a challenge – especially for Illinois fans. One must depend on one’s friends to spend their rent money on you at the bar. Then go home. This is a necessary life skill.

2. Belief in a power greater than myself that will restore sanity.

Usually, this power arrives in the form of a police officer. The officer is restoring sanity for everyone in your section, your dorm, your block or your house. This allows the recovering fan to receive a little time for quiet reflection along with some really big compatriots – one of whom is named Bucky.

3. Stop controlling and live in the moment.

You didn’t throw the interception. You can’t command the kicker to miss the extra point. You can’t get that cheerleader to look at you. So give it up. You have bigger problems – like getting a C on the English Comp paper that is due at 8 am Monday.

Alums have similar problems. Attending business meetings with a hangover is poor lifestyle choice. Alums also can’t get that cheerleader to look at ‘em. So unless you can pass better than Brady Quinn, sit in the stands and enjoy the game!

4. Assess your personal ethical strengths.

This is a quick step. Most fans check their moral inventories at the stadium gate. It is a short list anyway. And when they pick it up on the way home, its a whole lot shorter.

Assess what you value in life. Honestly ask yourself ‘am I a good person?’ When was the last time I bought a round down at the Stadium Inn? So if you hang out at the Stadium Inn, share the load.

5. Shine the light of day upon my wrongs.

Shine all you want.. You are in the stadium with 50,000 other people doing the same thing. Why does the TV Cameraman keep pointing at me?

Asking questions is healthy. Not answering them is dangerous. For Alums that can’t get tickets anywhere but the student section this is doubly dangerous. Holding the babe over your head and passing her off to the guy behind you only invites tough questions from the wife. Don’t do anything that you would be embarrassed about if it showed up on Action News at 11.

6. Throw away all deficient characteristics.

Right when I leave the stadium. Ora right after I leave the bar. Ora forget it I’m going to bed.

Character flaws reveal themselves all at once during football season. The combination of heat, cold, liquor, noise and good looking college co-eds causes most male sense to get booted right through Touchdown Jesus’ arms. Unfortunately, this scores no points and is a possible source of extortion when one finally wants to settle down and get married. This also allows female companions a useful opportunity to gain promises of future actions – not for things like cutting the lawn, but for big stuff like long vacations in exchange for allowing one to watch his team uninterrupted for a couple hours. Southern girls have this down to an art. If they go to a game, they don’t bring any money.

7. Implore the Supreme Being to remove all defects and shortcomings.

Right after he removes the shortcomings of our running game! Is God watching this? If he was, he’d hit that O-Line with a 2 by 12.

Asking God to remove one’s shortcomings is a job He’ll probably drop right back on your sunburned bald spot – and He’ll most likely laugh as you stumble through the exercise. You dug the hole, now you fill it in. If you want to watch Penn State play Slippery Rock instead of working on your Physics homework, your call. But save your breath come pop-quiz time. This applies to Alums who need work but only make it as far as the ESPN Zone.

8. Make things right with all that have been harmed.

Do referees count? How do I make it up to all the families in section 202?

Recovering fans really have to work at this. It is impossible to right the all wrongs of the season opening game. Everyone who heard your utterances while leaving the Big House last Saturday were thinking the same thing, though. Why should you be punished for saying what everyone else was thinking? The answer: because your conscience is buried in the closet with a bagel from last week, half a can of flat Miller Lite and your Black Sabbath tapes.

9. Provide reparation to those that have been wronged.

The Recovering Fan himself is included in this. This part of the process frequently goes bad for the RF as attempts to apologize only reignite the passions that caused the problem in the first place. Making an apology to a girlfriend while trying to climb up to her balcony is risky business – especially after the liquid required to gain courage for the venture.

10. Maintain personal ethical and moral standards and when wrong, promptly own up to it and correct any error.

Most Recovering Fans have to schedule this like a regular class. Alumni frequently have to re-enroll in this course and all tend seek the assistance of others. Others tend to have better observation skills towards our own actions. If not carefully selected, these aothersa can actually be honest and cause you to have to do some real work. So it is important to choose a Recovering Fan who is crazier than you.

11. Meditate to improve relationship with the Supreme Being, not asking for outcomes, but for guidance.

Most prayerful moments on campus do in fact take place either at the football stadium or near Sorority Row. They are inspired pleas and impassioned prayers and for better or worse, are at least honest. Don’t worry about this one. Scholars are wrong when they say religion is gone from our college campuses. Prayer is an active part of campus life.

12. Keep the new-found peace close to your active, conscious self.

By the time most Over Dedicated fans get to this part, it is Friday evening and the gang is headed down to the local pub to psych up for tomorrow’s game. By Friday evening, it is difficult to raise the moral standards to a higher consciousness, so the standard practice is to lower one’s consciousness to the level of whatever moral state one falls into at the end of the week. This may be done at the Stadium Inn.

So have a good time on Saturday, but don’t do anything that will cause moral stress or anxiety should your team come out on the short end. And if Michigan tanks at home again this season, send a care package.

DIY fan programs for outdoor wedding in Summer – tacky?
I’ve already went way over budget on my wedding and I forgot about the programs so I’m going to have to get into DIY mode. It is an outdoor wedding in SoCal and will be in July so it’s going to be very hot! I thought the “fan” type programs would be a great thing to do but I’m hearing that a lot of people find these tacky.

My theme is bombay orchids (which are fuchsia) with lots of greenery and certain orange flowers as accents. Very breezy type wedding and will be at a restaurant on the Lake. I was thinking of using white cardstock with a faint orchid image in the background and then the “popsicle” type stick with a sage green ribbon tied around the handle. What do you think? Any other suggestions?

  We’re also having hand fans at our summer wedding. If you go outside the wedding biz, you can find some custom hand fans that are pretty affordable. After checking around, I decided this site had the best prices: http://www.handfans4less.com/stock.html. You can get 250 doublesided handfans, one color printing for about 5. The quality is probably higher than you can get by doing it yourself, and to me the price seems good. They have a bunch of shapes you can pick from and you just send them a file with your artwork (aka your program design.)
  
  If you do decide to make them yoursself, you should know a couple of things. The cardstock that you buy at the office supply store is not as heavy weight as the cardboard that commerical fan printers would use. You might need to glue two sheets of cardstock together. But then you’ll probably end up with some warping from the glue. Do some tests and see what you think.
  
  Secondly, you need real fan handles to give support and strength to your fan. DO NOT just use popsicle sticks- they’re way too short for one thing. You need to buy fan handles.   I’m making them myself. I’m using Ivory and Chocolate cardstock. You can find in it craft stores or office supply stores. I’m doing 5 sheets (3 ivory, 2 chocolate) and there won’t be any print on the chocolate. I’m cutting each sheet into three sections, punching a hole in the middle and tying it with a ribbon. I bought a decorate edge embosser for at hobby lobby. It presses a design into the corners of the paper and rounds the edges.

  People are at our wedding, they know who we are, and the bridal party gets introduced at the reception anyway.   Hello! I think the fan idea is wonderful! I am also having fans, (June bride to) but I let you in on a little story.
  
  A friend of mine did handmade beautiful programs for 150 guest last year…….Everyone asked were she bought them and raved about them to this day they still talk about them ……however out of the 150 she handed out only 20 were taken and the rest were left on the table. she spent lots of time making them and cost was 0.00 – 5.00, wasted! Also most items like programs are tossed soon as they get home. Personally I think you should Save your money and upgrade something else!

  I don’t think you need a template….just sketch out the shape you want on cardboard to make a stencil.
  
  As a side note I would reccomend you go ahead and purchase some inexpensive fans from a company like Oriental Trading or have a print shop do them rather than try to make them yourself. In order to be effective they would need to be made out of heavyweight cardstock and more than just a popsicle stick as a handle. When you factor in the time and cost of materials it’s really much more of a pain in the rear than it’s worth.

  It’s hard to judge from the photo how large the fans are, but I notice the bottom of the handle has a loop on it. Instead of trying to glue the program onto the fan itself, have you thought about having the program tied on with a pretty ribbon looping through the bottom of the handle? You can set the fans on the seats of the chair with the program card laying on top of it. Guests can untie the program from the fan if they want to read the program and use the fan at the same time. It might look funny to see a bunch of people holding up fans to read the program on it!

Need ideas on how to connect multiple pieces of paper?
I’m helping put together programs for a wedding. The programs are going to be fans made out of multiple pieces of paper, then all connected at the bottom so they can “fan” out so you can read them. So I need something to connect them with. Something like a pivoting rivet? Any help would be great.

Thinking about having a more casual wedding?
I like the formal weddings and think they’re beautiful, but I’m really leaning more to the casual intimate side. I would like to have my ceremony outside at my FH’s grandparents field. I want my guests to be casual and comfortable as well as our wedding party. I still want a wedding gown but it will probably be pretty simple, but still long. How to make ceremony programs?
I completely forgot about ceremony programs. Do I have to have them? I am having an outside wedding, so I did order fan favors, and they say a nice little love poem and thank you on them. Is that enough? If I have to have them, I guess I have to make them because the wedding is less than 4 weeks. How would I make them? Or would they just be too tacky, so I should not make them? Help!

  Some couple do them, some don’t.
  
  I just did a wedding where the turquoise fans (wedding color) had the program attached to the center of both sides.
  
  You’ll need Microsoft Word or some other office program, depending on how you want yours.
  Some are folded in thirds, some are narrow, some are layered.

  That sounds like it will be really cute. With everything that you have described it sounds like your wedding will have a definite country/southern atmosphere – not redneck at all.
  Have you thought about what you want to do for your centerpieces? Do you want to use flowers – or do you want to have something a little different? I like when people use fresh fruit, like lemons, for their centerpieces. Or I have seen some nice centerpieces using mason jars.

Please help with my wedding favor wording?
I love to make biscotti, and we are going to Italy for our honeymoon, so for our wedding favors, we are giving a biscotti in a bag, with a ribbon and attached will be two beaded wine charms. I am concerned some people wont know what the wine charms are, so for the tags we are attaching, I thought we should tell them without sounding corny.
Can you suggest a wording for the tags? Also, would it be best not to say, and have the “word” spread at the reception from those who know?
The only thing I was able to come up with is:
“Thinking of you from our honeymoon in Italy,
With these Wine charms and homemade biscotti”
Also, the program fans we are ordering say thank you on them really big so I dont think I need to say it again on the favor tags.

  I don’t care for your wording, because it sounds like you are already IN Italy, and if the favors are going to be given at the reception, it doesn’t make sense. If you want to include a note, I’d do something simple like,
  “Thank you for joining us to celebrate our marriage today. Please enjoy the wine charms and homemade biscotti as our gift to you — Sue & Shawn 06.24.09″.
  
  It doesn’t have to rhyme or anything, I’d just make it a short and sweet note!

I made program fans and am handing out bubbles at the sign in table. Do I need favors also? If so, any ideas of something I could do quick, I have less than 2 weeks!

  Nope, they are unnecessary and are often forgotten or taken home then thrown out anyways. The only favour that is worth while is an edible one that could be consumed at the wedding.

Will noon be too hot for an outdoor wedding in August?
Wedding is Aug. 1st, the average temp. for the area is 85 degrees and dry. Ceremony will be outdoors with little tree shade. We have planned for the ceremony to start at noon (should last around 1/2 hour total) – I have designed the programs to double as fans in hopes it will help, but will this just be too hot for our guests?!

We can maneuver the time somewhat (within a couple of hours) would that make enough difference temp. wise? Other options I have thought of include having the ceremony after the reception (read it in a bridal magazine, but dont know how it would work) or simply specifying that it is outdoors on the invitations and allow guests to use their own digression? Any ideas, suggestions or comments are much appreciated!!!

  Depends on where you are. Summer in some areas is comfortable and miserable in others. 85 and dry really isn’t that bad. Typically though, noon to around 3pm is considered the hottest part of the day. However, since there is little tree shade, you will need to parasols for everyone (you can get those cheap at Oriental.com) and have either bottled water at every seat or offer ice cold lemonade, sweet iced tea or whatever other non-alcoholic drinks you want as guests arrive.

  If you have a DJ, tell him to fade it out before the part you dont like. If you are using an iPod, you have two options. Get software and cut the song yourself. Or, have the person in charge of the iPod stop the song/fade out by lowering the volume.

  Roxio Sound editor does a great job. I spliced clips of our wedding in a song. So I had to remove and add parts in. It was like of like that “my heart will go on Song” from titanic. It take some time to do that, but what you are looking for is pretty easy, you just edit the wave with this software and take out what you want.

I used to read my newspaper and watch video feeds on line, fromthe Chicago Sun Times, but they have switched over to a more “entertainment” type of format on their website and I am just mortified watching news videos with commercials at the very beginning of every news video How can a company put a commercial on before a story of a man being gunned down on his wedding day, or a mother murdering her baby in the microwave? These are horrendous acts and I really feel ill at advertising in between these horror stroies and wonder if this isn’t one reason society has become so de-sensitized to horror and pain, when it seems like it is just another tv or video program and not really happening.
