Wedding Speeches – Groom Speeches

Grooms are expected to be nervous when it comes to their
wedding speech. Being nervous and being ill-prepared are two
different things. The audience will forgive you for being
nervous but it is hard for them not to feel let down or
disappointed if you have not spent the time on preparing you
a speech.

Preparation is the Key

Nothing replaces preparation. Your speech will be as good as
the time you spend on it. Write, rewrite it and polish it.
You should know it thoroughly by the time you have to
deliver it. The more you think about it, the more the
phrases and structure will be imbedded in your mind. This
will help you to stay on track. You can keep going by
recalling a phrase or two. You will know it is not exactly
what you meant to say but no one else will. To keep you on
track use notes with headings.

Relax

Easier said than done, I know, but you can slow down your
breathing and mentally let any tension go. Do not act in a
nervous way. Pretend to be calm and you will be calm. The
atmosphere helps, because by the time you have to make your
speech, the rest of the room are enjoying themselves. It is
a happy occasion so most people are ready to listen in an
amused, uncritical way. You can pick up on this feeling of
goodwill and relaxation to help put you in the same mood.
Decide to have fun and you will enjoy yourself.

Be Sincere

This is no time for complete frivolity. You have to be
sincere when you toast your bride and do it to the best of
your ability. You surely have to be sincere when you toast
your parents and your bride’s parents. Of course, you can be
light-hearted and talk about funny incidents that highlight
what you want to say but be careful about trying to be too
funny – particularly if the joke is on someone else. You
could live to regret it in the years to come.

Say What You Have to Say

Do not get up and ramble on. Say what you have to say and
sit down. People get bored very quickly. They want to
continue having a good time. If you are sincere and to the
point, they will be on your side and applaud
enthusiastically. They will compliment you on having made a
good speech. If you have fumbled about, rambled on and
generally gone nowhere, they will simply not mention your
speech or feel they have to come up with half-hearted
compliments.

There is no reason to make a bad speech at your wedding. You
owe it to everyone present to make the best speech you can.
Your efforts will be well rewarded by a proud bride and
parents and by grateful guests. When you look back in later
years you will feel good about the whole day and your
contribution.

  7. QUESTION:
where can I find sample grooms’ wedding day speeches for free?

    • ANSWER:
If you’re at a loss, then google. I did a two second search and was stunned at all the sites that came up. I won’t bother to list them, because they all seemed ridiculous. Just type in Groom Wedding Speech. But…

You don’t need a template. (They all seemed really bad) If you’re not big on public speaking, it can honestly just be a 30 second, thanks for coming everyone, we appreciate it, don’t forget to take your wedding favor. You already had the marriage, you don’t need to make another elaborate declaration of love for your bride. You can do that in private with your new wife and speak from the heart and not freak out because of 200 relatives staring at you.

If you have to go to the internet to find a sample speech, no one is going to enjoy it. Especially not your bride. Just make a short thank you. The speeches are really for the best man and maid of honor anyway.

  10. QUESTION:
where can i get a free ruby wedding anniversary speech to give at my parents party?

    • ANSWER:
I don’t think that you’ll find something you’d want online, but here’s a few ideas:

      1. How your parents met – after so many years even the most dull story can be given a little ‘soft focus’ and made to sound romantic – or funny!
      2. Their wedding day
      3. Their first home – there’s a funny joke you can add in here about your father ringing his mother up and saying that his new wife is being unreasonable and using 4-letter words all the time, and how he wants to come home. Your Grandmother then gets him to calm down and tell her what his new wife has been saying – 4 letter words: wash, cook, iron, dust….
      4. Children – funny or sweet stories about you and your siblings. If any of your siblings can’t make it, this is the time to read out a message from them.
      5. Their hobbies – is your dad a fanatical golfer or does he do ‘potting’ in his shed – does your mother knit for Britain or member of the WI… Whatever the hobby you can find an apt joke online.
      6. If you or your siblings are happily married, talk about how your parents’ marriage has been the inspiration for your own happy life.
      7. Grandchildren.
      8. Finally a toast to all the happy years and many more to come.

I’ve just come up with that off the top of my head. Hope that’s of some help – I think that a personal speech won’t take you too long and will be much more special.

Good luck and Congratulations to your parents!

  11. QUESTION:
What is the best free web page for speeches ?
    Wedding speeches etc

    • ANSWER:
Don’t use someone else’s speech for a wedding. If you’re the best man, you need to be the one talking, not stealing someone else’s speech.
If it isn’t about the couple, it won’t be worth much of anything.
Think of what you know about them and say it from the heart.

  12. QUESTION:

My step-son to be has agreed to make a speech at our wedding (he’s giving his mum away) but is having a major panic over what to say. There are loads of websites out there with examples of the ‘traditional’ speeches but we can’t find any for ‘son of the bride’.

  14. QUESTION:
    Wedding speeches/toasts?
I am maid of honour at my sis’s wedding. I am also horrible at speeches. Does anyone know of a free website where I can get a good speech and just modify it?
I tried searching but all I found were websites that wanted me to pay / subscribe to email.

    • ANSWER:
There are books at places like hallmark or chapters, that write short speeches or paragraphs about Friendship, sisters and love. I’d recommend having a look at these and writing down a couple of them you like. They sound beautiful and from the heart, and say what you really feel….one of the books is called True Friends Always Remain in Each Others Heart (A Blue Mountain Arts Collection)
      OR
You can read a couple of birthday or congratulations cards for sisters, and copy what they have said.
It’s totally ok to be nervous saying a speech, but when you say it, just direct it to your sister like you’re talking over a coffee, and it will feel less stressful for you. Good luck with it!

  15. QUESTION:

  25. QUESTION:
I need a speech for my sisters wedding…I am the maid of honor…HELP!?
I am the Maid of honor for my Big sisters wedding next month and I would like to do a speech. I am looking for a good poem to add to it and also help with my speech for FREE…

    • ANSWER:
I typed in wedding speeches into the Yahoo! browser, and got lots of websites. Also try The Knot for ideas.
I would tell a cute story from your past about your sister, maybe one about sisterly love. For instance, she might have scared off the neighborhood bully, or snuck around and got you a cool BD present. Make the story clean and cute. This is not the time to tell how she stole a lipstick from the store.
Then you tell how much she meant to you, and how much you will miss her. You talk about her sterling qualities, and how smart the groom is for spotting them, and marrying her.
You talk about how you like your sister’s choice of a groom, and proud to call him brother. then you read your poem.

My sister my forever friend by Rivers. And of course, if you had brothers or other sisters, this will have to have a little rewrite.

You had your parents to yourself
      A special girl you were
But then I came into your life
      And your parents became ours.

I have to say you did so well
      You never did complain
You helped our Mom and Dad watch over me
and taught me how to be

You dragged me everywhere with you
      You protected me from bullies
You showed me how to put on lipstick
And how to kiss a boy

You listened when I cried and cried
Over some boy who failed to notice
How I had grown into a woman
In the image of my big sister.

So now you’ve gone and caught
A man all for your very own
Who sees how mature and caring you are
and can see that proof–in me

So here is to my very best friend,
      my sister forever more
But best of all she is my friend
And I finally have a brother! {or, and I have another brother!]

I’ll be close at hand when that time comes
to teach your daughter those things
that long ago you taught to me
      on how to be–like you.

And if Mother Nature should choose for you
To give you a precious little boy
I still will be there when he needs
to learn how to make mud pies!

I love you Sis, amd please call me to teach your daughter how to put on mascara, you put in on me so thick I looked like a racoon!

Not sure this is a good poem, but it is free!

  26. QUESTION:
    Wedding Speech translation into Japanese?
I’m leaving early and won’t attend one of my best friend’s wedding. Thus, I’d like to make her a video message and since she likes Japanese, I thought I might as well give her a speech in Japanese. I can read Japanese but can’t write or understand the language. Please, when you translate the following, write it in the form in which I would find it easy to pronounce so not in the kanji way.
Please feel free to make corrections.

    Thanks

    Christine and Michael.
    Hello. Hello.
I am so happy for you.
The chance of meeting someone who you love and who loves you for who you are is like 0.000001%. Beautiful things happen to beautiful people and it was pretty obvious that happiness found you.
Christine, I have already mentioned a thousand times in the past that I really cherish your friendship. Thank for everything! Who would have thought that our first encounter in French class was the start of such an awesome friendship?
Although I am upset that you didn’t pick me, I am glad that you picked no one else but Michael! He is such a charming and nice person and beautiful just like you. It is a match made in heaven.
Christine, you are beyond amazing and Michael, I know that you will take great care of her. I know that you will love her always and forever, protect her and be with her until the very end!

So on that note I will propose a toast- May the best day of your life be the worst day of your future! May you live forever in love, and may love live forever in you.
    Cheers
    Kiss!

  27. QUESTION:
suing a wedding dj…on what grounds?!?
Well established wedding dj been in the buisiness over 20 years. We are the top of the line dj we dress to the 9′s we also take photos and put a free gallery online. One month before each wedding we meet up with the bride& groom to be & go through the whole wedding from start to finish which includes songs bridal waltz wedding bouquet games speeches..everything. Now one couple is saying they are unhappy with the performance from 10pm till midnight (they are happy with everything else) they say that from this time knowone danced.. They knew what music we would be playing (which usually kicks off..as weve been in the buisiness so long we know what works & what doesn’t) is it our fault if that particular crowd didn’t dance?as I said the 2hr interview 1 month before covers this… Followed by signed contract. Any advice?

    • ANSWER:
The questions I have is how detailed were you in song selection.
      a) just song type ie. country, r&b, pop
      b) particular songs besides the father/daughter & first dance

I like to use a combination of both of these. When I meet with a couple I will direct them to my website to pick songs for there event. There are 4 choices
      a) Must Play
      b) Play if possible
      c) Do Not Play
      d) Not making a choice

With this feature I have not had this issue come up. I have, however had a few grooms give me a list of all the song the wanted player in the order they wanted them played. In these cases I explain to the couple that while this list is great it may not represent there crowd and if I use only there list I can not promise there guest will dance or even stay. On the night of the event I will still start with the play list and as guest start to complain I will inform them this is the play list provided by the Groom and to direct there issue to him. Most times the groom will come to me with in 3 to 4 songs and to tell me to do what I do best.

Many things can lead to no dancing
      a) long reception (what time did you start, how long until the dancing started, was there a lot of down time)
      b) not all, but most parties need adult beverages to assist in relaxing the crowd
      c) maybe there just not a dancing crowed
d)could by a religious thing (I have been hired by Pentecostals with the understanding there would be no dancing) they wanted an Emcee
      last 3 questions
the last two hours, were they contracted or did you go overtime
and did they say anything during the dance good or bad
how often did you check with them on there impression
      Thank you

    45TH Anniversary Wedding Vows?
Anyone have any ideas how I can get a sample speech/vows for a 45th wedding anniversary. Preferably free!!. Thanks

    • ANSWER:
Clearly, you SHOULD write from the heart, but how do you sum up 45 years? Hopefully, this will help get you started…

(Spouse’s name), __ years ago, I pledged my love and commitment to you, but it seems like only yesterday. I promised to love you, honor you, comfort and keep you. I pledge to be by your side in sickness and in health, in times of want, and times of plenty, for better or worse, for the rest of our lives. These past __ years have tested those vows, but our enduring love for one another has prevailed. I come here today to make a fresh start, to renew our vows of love, honor, and fidelity, and to reaffirm my love for you.

  29. QUESTION:
What do you think of my wedding speech?
( It is for my mum who is getting married and i would like honest opinions. I’m better at creative writing than formal writing, thus the speech is like it is. Honesty Please)

A rose that unbuttons its petals
Is like the scene that I look upon now
For while a rose starts in a bud concealed
    Even from itself, you too
Are covered by your own bubble until
Someone walks straight into it eyes closed
The smooth coolness permeating the shell
To open for all to see

A dime that falls from the sky to land
Heads up on the pavement today
Must land only in your path as you
Leave us all, together bound like any
    Open book.

Red, white, yellow the glistening bloom
Unfolds unknowing for what to expect or
What expects it? But no less it unfolds just
As one has unfolded unto the other
Not sure but willing for trust and love
That gentle hidden flower blooms and
    Blossoms with the unknown, found
    At last

All eyes travel to one, formerly two
As they enter the world, not born into ours
But bound into theirs as free as before yet
Held tightly. For none but a miracle can
Tear eyes from the beauty and bliss I am
Proud to be a witness of.

Here today the stunning rose unseen radiates
The glow only found with the perfect
    Raindrop bringing flourish and growth
To the life of not only one but also any who see
Feel, and know the joy of a single
    Glistening rain drop, not accompanied
By a dark cloud but a rainbow

I’m happy today for the joining of two
Never before have I seen my beautiful mum
So willing to fall into the life of another
Finishing the puzzle she has found someone whom
    Fits – perfectly.
    That’s you Neville

You have brought more love to life
    Uncovered the rose
    Your beautiful wife
    You found that she glows

    You have finished the puzzle
For mum radiates but today this is from her heart

Mum you really are a rose- stunning
I’m so glad I am here to witness this joy
Glad you have found your raindrop who radiates
    Just like you
The smiles etched on everyone’s faces are for you
    Now two

Of friends and family I ask you raise
Your glasses to our very own
    Glistening rose and perfect raindrop
    The Bride and Groom

    • ANSWER:
way too long and cheesy for my tastes. If I was at a wedding and someone said all that, I’d be snickering to myself and just hoping for it to end. You write well, but that is just too much for a wedding. The wedding isn’t about you, it isn’t the time to try to impress people with your incredible wit and writing skills, it’s about your Mom and honoring her. Short and sweet should be the way to go! Short as in 1/20th of what you wrote there. And just keep it light.

My sister is getting married on November 19th, 2010. I got married at my friend’s dad and stepmother’s house on a cliff with a view of the beach in California, and we had a reception at her step-dad and mother’s house in the dessert.. 40 minutes from her Dad’s.. but her wedding is bigger.

She will be getting married on a cruise ship. They live in Miami. She is 26 years old and is marrying her high school sweet-heart of 10 years. They have known each other since age 10, but they were friends then dated in high school and through out their years. They got engaged 2 years ago, they moved to Miami from Destin, they got new jobs, a new house, settled in, got to know each other more and plan the wedding slowly. 380 guests: We have a big family, and they have a lot of friends. I had 420, but 380 is reasonable in her case. So here is the plan for my cousin, pretend it is you:

You arrive on Thursday, November 17th in Miami from your home and arrive at 8:00 am. You get out of the airport, check into the hotel, then you go out with a family member for lunch and shopping, then sight-seeing and do 2 things like the sea-copter, seaquarium, metro-zoo, ever-glades, science musuem, parrot jungle, monkey jungle, coral castle or south beach and things like that.. then go do a thing with some family with the kids and go do some sight-seeing to 1 place, dinner, then a movie and go back to the hotel, shower and then go to bed!

Then on the 18th- you get up, eat breakfast, then check out of the hotel, do 1 thing for sight-seeing, then go hang out at south beach, then go check on to the cruise ship, settle in, shower, then get ready for the rehearsal dinner at a 5 star restaurant, then do the rehearsal dinner then get back to the ship and go to bed..

Then on the 19th- wake up, breakfast, do 1 thing for sight-seeing, then have lunch, get back to the cruise ship, relax for an hour or two, then shower, then get ready for the wedding, and go to a beach wedding which is romantic and beautiful and private and relaxing, then after the ceremony- you go across the street for the reception in a beautiful garden outdoor’s but have cocktail hour and pictures first. Then get escorted indoors into a beautiful sun room with a lovely view of the beach and get seated, then have dinner and listen to nice dinner music, then listen to the speeches, dance to good music and socialise, then listen to the bride and groom’s speeches, look at the slide-show, then have cake and icecream, then dance again, then do the games and all, then dance, then get dismissed to the cruise ship and cruise away.. then settle in outside on the party deck and then they will have a “night-club” for some people until 6:00 am.

Then on the 20th- you wake up and then get free breakfast and enjoy your 8 day cruise around the carribean and then go back to Miami on the 28th, do some last-minute sigh-seeing and family time then leave on the 30th.

Is this a nice wedding for you? Would you like it? It is a free cruise, for the guests. It is private, no strangers. Lot’s of stops on islands, lots of activities, lots of fun and romance. What do you think?

    • ANSWER:
I would be out of my element and loving every minute of it! It’s more than nice, but you do need to remember that people have to understand what their cost is going to be so that they can plan on if they can afford their share of whatever you are going to be expecting them to pay. Most people don’t pay thousands for a week long cruise but if it is free you have to be very clear about whatever the hotel costs etc…might be. But, if your families and people invited for the whole shebang have the money then go for it. Just remember that if you have a college student, someone who just had a child, or is struggling with getting a job in this horrid recession that if you really want them to show up – you are going to have to cover more of the costs to make it possible for them unless it doesn’t matter to you if they are there or not. It IS a once in a lifetime wedding though. I can’t think of anyway to top that. There is some structure but that’s ok because the cruise time and activities are all up to the participants. If I attended a wedding like this it would definitely be a once in a lifetime kind of vacation with my spouse. Invite me – please!!! I’ll pay my way! – Just kidding – congratulations!!! Just be careful not to get negative about it or compare her wedding to yours. Just let that kind of thinking go and enjoy the ride. Not very many people host or ever attend a wedding like this! Plus, the photos you’ll get are going to be absolutely fantastic!

  33. QUESTION:
Do I have a case to Legally Demand a Refund from a Wedding Reception Hall?
Basically my wedding reception was a disaster.

The fire alarm went off during the introductions of the wedding party. The room did NOT have to evacuate, so we know it was a false alarm, but the wedding coordinator instructed everyone, including the band, to just “push through” and they entire introductions were ruined by an ear screeching alarm.

After the fire alarm threw some things off, the agreed order of the night was completely abandoned. The speeches, the dinner, the cake cutting, the first dance, all of these usual things were all thrown out of order. It may sound like nothing, but to a mother of the bride who spent months planning this out, it was disastrous to see all of this get thrown out of order.

When we approached the coordinator about the order of things, she held up a hand written piece of paper and said, “Here’s the instructions I just got from the bride and groom.” We don’t think she actually got it from them, but regardless, she shouldn’t have thrown the agreed order out the window for anybody.

The champagne was poured at the wrong time, so many of those glasses were drank before the toasts even began. For this reason, we asked them to re-pour the champagne. They DID re-pour and they did admit they were wrong, and for this they gave us free champagne on the house for that second pour, so I can say they tried to fix this one issue.

During the speeches, there was a clear cut-off in terms of which areas of the audience could hear the speeches. If you were too far away on either side of the speaker, you could hear nothing. I would say about 25% of the guests heard absolutely none of the speeches.

Although I can’t complain about the band’s performance, they were totally out of the loop and never seemed to know what to do next. During the first dance, the song wouldn’t play (they were a live band, but they played the first dance song on an ipod) so we sat there and listened to the song start over about 5 times. I had asked the coordinator about this weeks ago, when I said, “How is the band going to know the order of everything?” The coordinator’s BOSS assured me, “Don’t worry, we will both be here keeping things on track.” Well, the boss didn’t show up, so that was a lie right there.

I guess overall, I just feel like a very normal, polite, reasonable person who isn’t fully satisfied with the product I received from this outfit. I have about K worth of the charges on a credit card, so I am going to first file a dispute on that charge with the credit card company, but I wanted to ask here, what are the legal ramifications? I feel like about 10% to 20% of the reception was truly ruined by human error, and the reception hall did not fully live up to their end of the contract.

I tried to give it a couple days to take the emotion out of this issue as best I could, but I still feel like I didn’t receive the product that I agreed to.

Anyone have a suggestion on how to handle this? I feel like I am owed a refund, but it is hard to quantify the dollar amount.

    • ANSWER:
First of all, did you check references for the reception location? If they were truly that disorganized, you should have known from the number of poor reviews online. You definitely want to post an online complaint at places like theknot.com so that others do not have the same issue.

As for recourse, things like the speakers not being loud enough aren’t really grounds for a refund (you didn’t ask the model and wattage of the sound system before booking?) As for the “pushing through” and poor execution with the uninformed band, again that’s not really recoverable.

What you can seek retribution for is the amount of time that the alarm was sounding. If the alarms sounded for 30 minutes, for example, and you had a 4 hour reception, you could claim 1/8th of your room rental fee, band fee, etc. back. However, you won’t be able to have the cost of the food refunded. That assumes that the contract doesn’t have a clause for “act of God” and there was an actual fire.

If it was my wedding, I would have demanded that we not “push through” and they could add 10 or 20 or however long on to the end of the event. If she showed me the instructions of the bride/groom, I would have showed her my checkbook. The location works for the person that’s paying, not for the bride or groom (unless they are paying).

  34. QUESTION:
How can I make my Wedding and Reception even more fun?!?
Okay everyone, so here’s the deal: We are having a wedding in about a month. Hawaii is a large part in our lives as that’s where he proposed when I visited him there when he was in the Navy. I also have been doing Polynesian dancing since I was 7 and I am 25 now.

So what we are doing is a mostly casual thing. Everyone is asked to be casual and comfortable. No gifts either. There will be approx 200 guests including kids. It will all take place in the evening, starting at 5:00pm and it will be dark around 8:00pm that night. It’s all at his parents house in the country on acres and acres.

As guests arrive, the dancers will be greeting them with a lei and kiss on the cheek! :) The ceremony is by a fountain and pond. Very pretty. I am wearing a beach wedding dress and he is wearing khaki short and a white button up shirt. The wedding party is in matching fabric dresses for the ladies and shirts for the men. We are all going to wear flip flops. We also decided on no bouquets or anything, instead the ladies are going to hold a glass of champagne and the guys a beer.

After the ceremony, we will start the BBQ buffet immediately since we are taking photos before the event. There will be LOTS of awesome home made food prepared by our awesome families! During this time, there will be Hawaiian/beach themed music playing in the background. About 45min later we will do the speeches and then we will cut the cake. Once that is over, the live band will play for about 15min or so as they cake is passed out before an Authentic Luau is performed! They will be doing dances from Hawaii to Tahiti, including a fire dancer! So it will be very exciting! They also pull some of the guests up for audience participation in the end. That is about a 45min show all together.

We will also have a Tiki Bar. Basically, we are taking care of most the expenses for the bar, all but each. So we are still forking out -3 each drink that people buy… There will be things like Jungle Juice, Beer, Mai-Tais, Hurricanes & Coke w/ Rum. Which the Tiki Bar will be open before the ceremony.

After the Luau, we will do the garter and bouquet. This will be around 8pm. I figure most will leave at this time. The band will play during this “transition” time for about an hour as people say bye and all and then we are having an “after party”. Just a few hours with no schedule, program or anything. Just so we can actually enjoy the evening, it not go by so fast and really get to visit with some guests. We have quite a few flying in or driving a long ways, and a wedding is not the greatest place for catch up and hang out. I don’t care if only 15 people are there for the “after party” We will have a DJ, the bar and all as well during this time.

Anyway, so I think that’s it. So what I am looking for is some ideas to make sure this is a blast for everyone! I want people to want to stay!

I am getting a piñata for the kids as well as something for them to do, not too sure yet. And someone also mentioned having a volley ball net set up or something…?

We already got all the tiki torches to put everywhere, as well as party lights to hang and there is already a built in fire pit that they have there too! So I was thinking maybe get some stuff to make Smores!

I basically just want a really fun, comfortable and memorable evening! I don’t care about tradition, being fancy or impressing anyone. This is a time to live it up for us before my fiancé gets deployed in a few months.

Thank you all in advance for any ideas!!!

P.S. Please don’t respond with lectures of spending money and all that matters is marrying the one I love and all that. Just so you know, not a lot is being spent. We have a very large family and everyone is pitching in a little to help with the food & drink. I have a very close friend who owns a party rental store, so those are nearly free except for the people to set things up. The band and dancers, I am part of the group and we are all like family… they wouldn’t let me pay a dime if I tried! Again, lots of people are traveling to get there, I want it to be worth it and fun! So please, spare the rudeness and just leave my question alone if that’s all you have to say. That is not what I am asking for. I am asking for ideas to make it more fun, unique or more pleasant!
Awww you all are so sweet. Yeah, sorry it was kinda long, lol. And great advice for the time taken to get through a line. It will be a double sided line of food. And 45min may be enough before speeches start. If not, no biggie. We will also have siblings (there are 14 total) pass out the cake during the Luau. If people arent ready for it, they can just wait. But still, I may add 15 min to each area of time. Thanks again!!!

    • ANSWER:
Have the table cloth on the children’s table be white paper where the kids can color on it. If the kids are having a good time the parents won’t want to leave. Get them bubbles to blow while you are doing your dances, and sparklers for everyone.

You might be surprised, people might stay longer than you think! Most importantly have FUN!

  35. QUESTION:
If you were a guest invited to my wedding, how would you feel…?
-Afternoon event with ceremony and reception-ish thing taking place at a rented out family fun park.
-All guests will receive coupons for free go-kart rides, access to the driving range, mini putt and water bombers.
-Food on the house (We’re talking stuff along the lines of chicken wings and french fries)
    -Alcohol free
-Guests will witness our coming together under a big tent, speeches and toasts will be made in same vicinity, and guests will be free to roam the premises (and access the go-karts following our first lap as husband and wife)
-We’re letting everyone know it’s a casual shindig.

    Dare I ask. . . thoughts?

    • ANSWER:
I’d probably ask if you would have banjos playing as well. Seriously it sounds more like a school field trip than an important classy wedding. But hey, to each their own.

  36. QUESTION:
What does it mean to be “inappropriate”?
Society today spends a great deal of it’s time defining different levels of obscenity, and then attempting to restrict it. Primarily, we restrict obscene language and sexuality on publicly accessible radio and television broadcasts. However, we are beginning to restrict what we consider obscene from written publication and public display. Then, when questioned about such restrictions violating free speech, the explanation is that the first amendment does not apply to obscenity. The US Federal government is in the process now of passing a law that would legally prohibit the production or possession of any written work that contain detailed sexual situations involving incest or pedophilia.

Politics aside, the classification of certain things as being “inappropriate” seems to have some uses. People who see a great deal of media glorifying and encouraging violent crime could become psychologically inclined to commit violent crimes, as exposure to such media has reduced their perception of such crimes as being bad.

However, it seems that we are ready to shield children from anything inappropriate, and the things that are most worried about seem to me to be extremely benign.

I suppose that glorifying sexual promiscuity could result in negative consequences, but anything depicting sex as more than a loving, serious encounter between a legally wed man and woman seems to be immediately labeled as taboo. Even in cases where sex is depicted in the most acceptable way society can define, we still shield youth from it because the majority of people feel that their children should not even know that sex exists until they are nearly to puberty.

For a movie, the difference between a PG rating and an R rating could be the number of times a particular slang term for feces is used. A single instance of a slang term for sexual intercourse, even if used in such a way that it’s definition is not revealed to those who do not already know, could bring a movie from PG to R.

    My questions are:

How can one justify “Obscene” materials such as sexuality, including acts of sex and graphic depictions of the natural human anatomy as being damaging. How does restricting the free use of such material in public, and the shielding of children from mere knowledge of the existence of the concepts behind those materials benefit any individual or society?

How do particular slang terms for moderately unacceptable concepts get to be more inappropriate than the concept itself. ie. If a child draws a picture of a pile of poop, people think it’s funny, but if that same child say “s**t” then they will likely be punished merely for saying the word, despite it’s mostly innocent definition, and without regard to whether or not the word was used in context, as an exclamatory, or as an insult.

Is there any scale that better represents why profanity has varying levels? “D**k” and “C**k” (slang for “Penis”) are considered moderate, and are usually treated as everyday words by much of the adult community. However, “C**t” (slang for “Vagina”) is considered by most of society to be extremely inappropriate and very insulting, despite the fact that the only difference between the two words is one referrers to male genitalia, while the other refers to female genitalia.

In reference to the previous, why, when legal bodies such as the FCC regulate such words giving one a great deal more severity than the other, is there no public opposition of sexism? Or is this because society is not offended by the meanings of the words, but simply the words themselves?

    In a nutshell:
What does it mean to be “inappropriate”?
What does it mean to be “obscene”?
    When does it matter?
    When doesn’t it matter?
When does society define when it matters?
What are he pros and cons to the combined answers of the above questions?

    • ANSWER:
Re: Obscenity…that’s best definied in the court case of Miller Vs. California.

The Court, in an attempt to set such limits devised a set of three criteria which must be met in order for a work to be legitimately subject to state regulation:

      the average person, applying contemporary community standards (not national standards, as some prior tests required), must find that the work, taken as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest;

the work depicts or describes, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct or excretory functions specifically defined by applicable state law; and the work, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value.

This obscenity test overturns the definition of obscenity set out in the Memoirs decision, which held that “all ideas having even the slightest redeeming social importance . . . have the full protection of the guaranties [of the First Amendment]” and that obscenity was that which was “utterly without redeeming social importance.”

Re: Inappropriate. That’s really someone trying to impose their opinion on something or someone whose actions they personally don’t approve of. That’s pretty subjective.

  37. QUESTION:
What do you think about John Reid’s comments ? Do they apply to the McCann debate ?
From Salman Rushdie to Monty Python, free speech even if offensive is worth protecting .
“A lot of people were upset when John Cleese made “Life of
Brian”‘, Reid said, referring to the movie by Monty Python which parodied the life of Jesus & offended many Christians.
Reid also noted that many Jews were upset by the work of Mel
Gibson, whose 2004 film “The Passion of the Christ” drew charges of anti-Semitism.
” We have to be sensitive to the views of people of religion,
people who have very strong views, ” he said.

“But I think that we all appreciate that in the long run our protection of the right to express your views in literature,
argument, politics, is of over-riding political value to our societies, ” Reid said.

New York (Reuters) 2hrs 14 mins ago. Wed 20th June 2007
ToTina um. McCann connection context being , we all have our opinions, views & argument &should be allowed to express them , openly without abuse.
Piltdown Man, I think you mean haute
    cuisine, don’t you ?

    • ANSWER:
Which wit was it who said..’In the long run, we’re all dead’?
It was an economist…Milton Keynes or a similar name.

Our right to express our opinions is obviously sacred. The McCann debate is a bit irrelevant if you don’t mind me saying so, friend. People have valid opinions and they sometimes conflict.
That doesn’t mean to say one opinion is less valid than another, as I’m sure your understanding of the issue, given such an insightful question, reflects.

      # Maynard Keynes???

Piltman…..FFS go and have a lie down in a DARKENED ROOM WILLYA? Soz caps lock. You are beginning to come on like a bad Graham Norton wannabe.

  38. QUESTION:
No questions @ anti-monarchy protests by ‘Republic’? Are they right? Is a sizeable minority against Royals?
Any free speech comments on this BBC article?

Making a stand against the royal wedding
    By Nigel Pankhurst

Campaign group Republic will be holding its own events away from the official celebrations wedding

While the royal wedding will be a day of joy and celebration for many, for others it is the chance for their protests to be heard.

At the forefront of dissent will be anti-monarchy campaign group Republic, which will hold a Not the Royal Wedding alternative street party in central London during the day of events at Westminster Abbey.

Republic will be “celebrating democracy and people power rather than inherited privilege”.

The group is also behind a similar event at a pub in Manchester, and is publicising anti-monarchy plays to be performed in Cardiff and South Shields.

    ‘Publicity stunt’

Graham Smith, spokesman for Republic, told the BBC News website: “We need to get across the fact that the whole country isn’t interested in the royal wedding and a sizeable minority is against the monarchy. We need to raise awareness of this issue.

“We’re turning it around the other way because we see the wedding as a stunt by the monarchy. They’re putting on the wedding on this scale as a PR stunt.

“We have a responsibility to the many people in this country who oppose the monarchy to make a point.”

The London event was initially blocked by Camden Council – after businesses raised concerns about loss of trade – and was switched from Earlham Street in Covent Garden to nearby Red Lion Square in Holborn

    What say you?

Would you like UK to be a Republic, so your son or daughter could aspire to be President?
    Charles

    Republics abolish monarchies

& have Presidents instead, who can be voted out
    Helen

Good points, but what @ the public right to vote?

    • ANSWER:
I’ve noticed more & more folk, over the years, say that the Royals aren’t worth their keep

& that it’s nicer to be able to inspire kids with the hope of becoming President

  39. QUESTION:
Will Proposition 8 be overturned in time for people to plan their June weddings?
In 4 days, the Court will hear arguments on whether or not it was Constitutional

    http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/02/03/BAMB15MMOH.DTL

Will that give them enough time to plan their wedding? I’m disappointed that Conservatives, who normally follow the Constitution to the letter, would support such an unconstitutional bill.

The very purpose of a Bill of Rights was to withdraw certain subjects from the vicissitudes of political controversy, to place them beyond the reach of majorities and officials and to establish them as legal principles to be applied by the courts.

One’s right to life, liberty, and property, to free speech, a free press, freedom of worship and assembly, and other fundamental rights may not be submitted to vote; they depend on the outcome of no elections.

US Supreme Court, West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 1943

    • ANSWER:
Unfortunately the ruling will not come out until sometime in July.

The hate posted by Laura is unbelievable. If she wants to stay out of California, then good riddance, to her and her ilk.

Contrary to popular belief Civil Unions do not supply the same protection as marriage, on so many levels.

Marriage is a contact between two consenting adults, not an adult and a child, not a man and his dog, not a lady and her cat.

If the US is going to sanction it for one class of people, then they have no right to bar another class of people for taking part in the same union.

The US was founded and run by the rule of law, not the vote of a mob.

The California Supreme Court already said that gay marriage was legal, to think they would rule otherwise at this point is ignorant.

  40. QUESTION:
Are you feeling proud to be British?
It’s a great time for patriotism, Will and Kate’s wedding on the horizon, the Union flag proudly hanging to remind us what a great country we have, home of democracy, justice, free speech and honesty.

It’s great to see British firms showing their patriotism to the Nation and Crown. Take Roberts Radio, what could be more British, proudly displaying two “By appointment” royal warrants, and to celebrate this icons true blue British values they have introduced a model bedecked by that same Union flag that brings a tear to the eye of any British Bulldog patriot.

    Shame it’s Made in China!

Why isn’t it bound in Chinese flag? Symbol of torture, execution, cruelty and inhumanity!

    Isn’t this hypocrisy beyond belief?

    • ANSWER:
Actually Im English, and tbh dont really mind where the flag is made.

  41. QUESTION:
How can I get my fiance to understand autism?
I am a therapist in a special needs school who works one-on-one with a five year old autistic boy. I come home covered in bite marks and all my partner keeps saying is that he needs a beating and there’s no point in helping these kids because they’re animals and should be locked up. Stuff like that. I’ve never been able to properly explain to him that he has no sense of empathy and doesn’t understand how to express himself properly. He still has the old fashioned views that SN kids are not humans and don’t have the same rights. I can’t get it into his head that he is wrong, he says he has the right to free speech.
We have a great relationship and have been together for years but we’ll have to cancel the wedding if he carries on like this. He want’s me to change career but I have dedicated my life to this and would never think of getting a different job.
This needs to change fast, he’s not a horrible person he just idolises his Grandad who thinks the same way; and the only knowledge he has of SN is the horrible jokes his friends make and also his mum who has mental health problems who is the bain of his life.

Please help! I love him but can’t believe i’m with a guy like this!

    • ANSWER:
” I’ve never been able to properly explain to him that he has no sense of empathy and doesn’t understand how to express himself properly.”

This is the boy you’re working with, or your fiance, or both?
Does your fiance show any other autistic traits? Strong preference for routine, and resistance to change or spontaneity? Solitary hobbies? Explodes when things are not done “his way”
Just wondering about one possibility: that the man protests too much, methinks.

If he’s logical (and this should not take place during or after an argument), you might try asking him exactly how shouting at or beating a SN kid is supposed to help: he may never have actually thought it through, and just be using (echoing!) an opinion picked up from others. Human beings are quite capable of this.

“he says he has the right to free speech.” Ha ha… Never claim a right when it might bother you if someone else got their hands on it. By that rule you have free speech in regard of his comments, too. Use it. If he doesn’t like the reciprocity , then he needs to have a shake-out in his thinking. Time for a sit-down, calmly-talk-it-through conversation. Not easy, but if that can’t be done, it does not augur well for a future long term relationship, I suggest (with honesty but reluctance).

I suspect other methods, such a s leaving introductory books on autism around are unlikely to be effective.

I have Asperger’s syndrome, so I “get” autism but I’m not so sure I “get” relationships, though I’ve studied hard to partially make up the lack.

  42. QUESTION:
Are you a redneck or just a patriotic level headed American?
    • If you think “socialism” when you hear Barack say “change,” then you might be a redneck.

    • If you think there’s nothing about San Francisco that a rise in the ocean level could not cure, then you might be a redneck.

    • If you think slick politicians who rise from a political dung heap like Chicago might not be the fresh breeze they purport to be, then you might be a redneck.

    • If you think Michael Moore is John Murtha and Joy Behar’s love child, then you might be a redneck.

    • If you actually believe Obama’s close buddy Bill Ayers when he says he’s an anarchist, a Marxist and is unashamed of bombing the Pentagon and the Capitol building, then you might be a redneck.

    • If you think Jeremiah Wright, Obama’s pastor for 20 years, is more unhinged than a spider monkey that just had turpentine poured on its butt, then you might be a redneck.

    • If you get PO’ed because the vast majority of our college campuses spew anti-American rhetoric to your young ‘uns, then you might be a redneck.

    • If you think it’s kind of weird for Obama to be close friends with some of the most unpatriotic SOBs in the USA, then you might be a redneck.

    • If you don’t like your kids being taught in the public schools that America is an oppressive, imperialistic country that needs a heavy dose of Marxism to make it better, then you might be a redneck.

  43. QUESTION:
The Next Big 3 Free Agent Power Team?
Chris Paul recently attended Carmelo Anthony’s wedding in New York. During his toast to the newlyweds, he made a prediction regarding a new Big 3 trio coming soon to the Knicks.

“According to a person who spoke with wedding attendee Amar’e Stoudemire, Paul made the reference during a speech of a potential union of himself, Stoudemire and Anthony, saying, “We’ll form our own Big 3,” Paul allegedly said.”

Can this new trio of Paul-Melo-Amare challenge or be even more dominant than the Miami 3 Kings of Wade-LeBron-Bosh? What do you think?

    http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/knicks/me_amar_and_melo_BU8MzS41wIdwRYLU1D7NTJ#ixzz0tUKw3veE

    • ANSWER:
Yes they can be. This is because the Knicks would have something that miami doesnt have.

      A dominant point guard.
The miami heat have Chalmers. Hes ok, but you need a good point guard to make plays and get the ball to you. Also, the Knicks would also have carmelo to score, like maim has lebron, and they would have A big man in amare to do the dirty work, like the heat have Bosh.

Put it this way, wade is just like a duplicate lebron in ways. He doesnt make plays as his role, none of the heats three do. You need that one guy who serves yopu the ball so you can score.

So yes, they CAN be more dominant.

      Thanks and hope i helped.

  44. QUESTION:
Any tips for a (freaking out) Maid of Honor?
The date hasn’t been set yet. They are waiting to find out if and when the groom is getting deployed. So, the wedding plans might be rushed after they find out, and I rather have the speech ready and free my focus on other things. I’ve been looking at the duties and feeling a bit overwhelmed. But I can do this..

First of all, I am not the best public speaker-though I’d loved to be calm and collected when I’m standing in front of their family and friends, so many unfamiliar faces, I’ll probably freak out. So any tips on keeping my cool? Also, how long do these speeches usually last? I have some ideas of what I want to say, but I don’t want to be up there for too long. I also want to have time to give a lovely speech.

I’m honored that she asked me. I really am, and I want this to run smoothly and be just as special as she hoped it would. Any tips in general? Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
This may sound like a strange piece of advice, but it’s to make you feel better! These speeches are important to about one percent of the audience, so the operative word is SHORT. Just make a basic outline of 2-3 major points and speak from the heart. My first speech as MOH was to my sister, and it was under a minute. I joked about how I, the older sister, always got to do everything first, yet she won the biggest competition of all in beating me to the altar. Then I just commented on how much I enjoyed getting to know “Jason” and how glad I was to welcome him to our family. The End.

Also, if you’ve been reading industry lists of MOH duties, rip them up, take a deep breath, and talk to the bride :) Some of that stuff reads like the job description in a coronation, and most of us – as brides or as MOH’s – never enountered the vast majority of it. The big things are to ask if she wants a bridal shower (keep it small – just closest friends and family) and/or bachelorette. Buy your dress. Show up at the rehearsal. Have fun at the reception. And just be her unofficial sounding board at all times.

  45. QUESTION:
    Opie & Anthony!?!?!?
First of all, the ONLY reason i have XM is to listen to the Opie and Anthony show. Whether a fan or not, what is being done to them, and radio hosts alike, is a shame. An embarrasment to our society.

Here’s what other’s have to say:

“O&A had a homeless gentlemen on their “pay service” XM show on Weds, the person maybe some off color remarks about having sex with Condoleezza Rice and Laura Bush… Now they are under fire for something that they DIDNT even say. XM has confirmed today that O&A have been suspended for 30 days, and other sources say they have been ‘unofficially’ fired.”

“The attack on free speech has gone far enough. First, its FCC regulated “free” radio hosts being fired for what they were paid to do. But, now unregulated pay services are sucumbing to pressure from special interest group’s attacking speech they don’t like. This is where we draw the line in the sand.”
This needs to be stopped before it goes too far. Now it’s radio talk shows, what’s next? Television? Music? YOUR freedom of speech?

    What’s your opinion?
I love the fact that XM stock has plumeted since the suspension of O&A. I wish Imus had this much support from his fans when this happened to him. If you call XM to cancel your subsciption, the first thing they say: ” is this due to the O&A suspension?” I’m hoping XM gets the hint. I’m no fan of Howard, but if we can save O&A, maybe we’ll save Howard’s show as well, because if they get cancelled I can only assume they’ll go after Howard next.

The reason behind the suspension was not what was actually said. After the dilema, O&A signed a contract that they would not talk about the situation on air. Unfortunately, they did, very vagely and briefly, and that is the reason for the suspension.
I find it irionic that they’re still on CBS after this mess… After all, CBS canned Imus… In the middle of a charity drive for cancerous children none the less… This is all ridiculous, unfair and unsettling.

    • ANSWER:
It sickens me what is going on with Freedom of Speech, this is a freedom of speech issue, they never said that she should be raped, Homeless Charlie said he would liek to f*** her and punch her but they never said they were going to or that someone should, there are no threats there to clear it up for the person who said i wasa threat.

It sickens me that the PC police want to tell me and you what we can listen to like we are not smart enough. It sickens me that there is a new age witch hut going on, Imus, JV and Elvis, now Opie and Anthony are being singled out. I immediatly cancelled my subscription to XM because it is a sham, I pay for uncensored radio and they turn around and censor something I want to listen to, F*** XM! XM SUCKS!
I am going to make a stand, it is time we come together and protest to save free speech! I have an organized peaceful protest coming together in Boston and others should do the same in their cities before this goes to far, next they will go after more radio, comedy, music,TV and movies, why can others can control our entertainment? There is already talk about censoring music, there is talk about further cenroshing comedy. It is going against everything this country was founded upon, the first amendment is one of the founding principles of this country and it is being taken away slowly day by day and we must try and save it now. Like you said this is an embaraasment.

  46. QUESTION:
Is this what Christan’s believe in this country whats up with some pastors? The Spirit One Christan CENTRE Si?
CNN s Rick Sanchez will have pastor Mark Holick on Wed. to explain and defend his sign he placed on the street in Wichita Kansas standing for all to see

“America we have a Muslim as a president. this is sin against the LORD”"

Please…now maybe we can understand why people post stupid questions on here regarding this matter.

What is wrong with this..is this true free speech with any purpose or just his opinion and preaching this to his people.? Given all the bs about Wright what is the difference….do all Christan’ believe this to be true? Or is it just that area

Please refrain about Wright…we know he damned America…didn’t pastor Holick state his people sinned and everyone sinned because they voted Obama?

See…Church and State should remain apart…look how it divides people! Thoughts?
    Common sense ; I know

This person does not speak for all and is free to say what he wants but this is not the only incident ….shades of JFK when everyone hated him BECAUSE he was Catholic..
Thank You for answers hard to choose (:

    • ANSWER:
Its hate speech, and its against the law. This pastor should be forced to take the sign down, and if he refuses he should then be arrested.
The sign doesn’t surprise me, Ive come expect this type of intolerance from Christians. Jerry Falwell and Marion “Pat” Robertson made similar comments after the 9/11 attacks, blaming Pagans, abortionists, feminists, gays and the lesbians, the ACLU, and People For the American Way for the 9?11 attacks.

  47. QUESTION:
I know preschoolers need to have activities and be around other kids, but how much is too much?
My children are 3 and 4. There are so many things going on and fun things we like to do but I dont want to do too much. There are play groups 2 days a wk, story hours, my son goes to speech 2 days per wk and now I am looking into putting him in preschool 2 mornings per wk b/c he starts kindergarten next year and he is still very shy when Im not around or in a new situation. If I try to do all these things we will be gone most of the day (home around 3) Mon, Tues and Fri (prek & speech 2 days & just one day playgroup) and half the day on Wed.(story/music time) Nothing going on thurs but there are days we want to visit or go to the park and I teach them a lot at home. I don’t want to stop playgroup or story/music time at the library b/c they love them both. Maybe I could do both every other wk….
How much time do you spend at home just letting the kids play and have free time and how much time do you do other activities away from home
No, I don’t have any time to myself. My hubby suggests putting our 3 year old in preschool w/my 4 yr old. (2 mornings-3 hrs each) She actually wants to go but I am not sure about that …. she’s my baby! =0)

    • ANSWER:
I think it is all about what you are comfortable with. Sounds like you are a very interactive mom. That’s terrific. I like the fact that you aren’t sticking them in front of a TV or computer. I think highly structured activities 3 times a week is great. Do you ever get to do anything by yourself? You need to make time for you, too. Sounds like you are doing a great job.

  48. QUESTION:
    HEEEEEELPPPP!! ahhh?
I am the maid of honor in a wedding, and i need a speech/toast. The speech is for my sister, her wedding is in January. I have NO idea what to write, i want it to be funny, because thats the kind of person i am, but i want it to be heartfelt to because i love my sister more than anything. if you have any suggestions of sites that have sample speeches/toast, or templates to writing a maid of honor speech/toast, that would be soooooooooooo helpful! thank you so much. I already tried google-ing it and i couldn’t find anything for FREE that suited me. I NEED HELP!!

    • ANSWER:
You write so nicely and from the heart that I find it hard to believe that you cant come up with something yourself.
Sit down and think about some nice memories you have from growing up with your sister. Think about the love you share and the happiness you are feeling coming from her.
Write it all down. Let it flow. Write from the heart. I am sure there is some special and funny memories you can add to the speech. Perhaps there was a song she used to love or a poem you relate to her or to your childhood……
I know she will love a personal and heartfelt speech straight from your heart, rather than a doctored standard speech.
Be creative. You can do it!

  49. QUESTION:
I need some help writing the conclusion to this report?!? Thanks!!?
Hey, mahn! If the only things you know about Jamaica all come from a Bob Marley song, then get ready to learn a whole lot more as we explore the lifestyle, holidays & festivals, language and foods of wonderful Jamaica!

Family life in Jamacia is centered more around the mother-child realtionship than around the husband-wife realtionship. Children, not marriage, mark a woman’s passage to adulthood. Even today, if a man leaves his family, his children will stay with their mother and her extended family. The women thus plays a central and decisive role in the family. She has access to birth control and will have children when she wants them. Primary health-care clinics provide prenatal and postnatal services for mothers and children.

A Jamaican child spends most of his or her growing-up years with the mother and sees little of the father, who may be working far from home. When they finish school, many young Jamaicans, especially males, go to Kingston to find jobs. Young Jamaican women who have finished formal education may work in various sectors of the economy, such as health care, the civil service, or free- trade zones. Many Jamacians work in the hotels as waiters and housekeeping staff. People also make money by selling food & handicrafts to tourists on the beach. People can lose their jobs easily if the tourisim industry is not highly productive.

Jamaican weddings are big celebrations involving a lot of expense and preparation. Before the wedding, the parents of the young man and woman have a formal meeting. Presents from friends and relatives start arriving long before the wedding day, sometimes months in advance. A common gift is eggs to be used to make the wedding cake. The grandmothers of the couple tradtionally help to choose the couple’s clothes for the ceremony. On the night before the wedding, most guests will stay up singing and eating. The church ceremony is an occasion for everyone to dress in their best clothes. The ceremoy is fairly short and is followed by the cutting of the wedding cake, which is typically a fruit cake filled with raisins, currants, and other fruit soaked in rum and wine. Speeches are then made before the happy event ends with a large feast and more merrymaking that continues into the early hours of the morning.

Jamaica has ten public holidays each year, including Christian holidays such as Christmas and Easter. The island also has several festivals. Jamacians celebrate their Independance Day on the first Monday in August. Song and dance events & contests lead up to the day. The festival ends with a costume show and grand parade. Jonkonuu dancing is a Christmas tradition. It began among Jamaicans African salves. Dancers wear colorful customes and spectacular masks. They sing & dance to the rhythm of drums, banjos, and other instruments. Jamacian folklore is rich with African traditions. Anansi, from West African folklore, is a spider man who can take many forms. He plays tricks on people to teach them a lesson. Obeah is a force that can do good or evil. To avoid Obeah, a Jamacian tries not to be too proud about good health or good fortune. Jamacians are proud of who they are. Their culture & traditions bring joy & meaning to everyday life.

Jamacia’s offical language is English. Jamacian English vocabulary might give the impression that islanders have been caught up in a time warp. They have perserved some words and phrases found only in Shakespeare’s works or in the Bible. Saying goodbye, for example, a Jamaican speaking patios may say “Peradventure I wi’ see you tomorrow.” A Jamaican might speak of an insect that “biteth like the serpent” or of a “righteous” court decision. Jamaicans are educated in Stanard English. In converstaion, however, Jamaicans mix Standard English wth colloquail words and expressions. The different language levels reflect Jamacia’s social levels- the higher the level, the greater the use of Standard English. Among friends and family, pronounciation, vocabulary, and grammar depart radically from Standard English. Standard English will contine to be used in Jamaica because of its importance for international commerce.

Finally, Jamaicans eat many delicious foods that grow on the island. Yams, breadfruits (a large round seedless or seeded fruit with a texture like bread; eaten boiled or baked or roasted or ground into flour; the roasted seeds resemble chestnuts), mangoes, pineapples, bananas and plantains (a greenish banana with a high starch content. It is cooked and eaten as staple food.)are all home grown. Rice with red beans is a popular Jamacian dish. So is jerk meat, which is spicy grilled chicken or pork. A popular breakfast dish is Akee (The edible, fleshy, ripe aril of this tree, especially popular as a food in Jamaica. The seeds and unripe arils are poisonous.) and saltfish.

    In conclusion Jamacia

    • ANSWER:
(The conclusion should tie together your underlying themes. In order to do this, you have to restate the major points of your paper, and then come to an encompassing conclusion based to some extent on what you originally stated in your introduction.)

Clearly, Jamaica is much more than what is referred to in the contents of Bob Marley’s song. Although one might not expect it to be, Jamaica is a matriarchial society in which the relationship between children and their mother’s is central their upbringing. As would be expected in a matriarchial society, weddings are much more important and are celebrated based on that premise. With regard to holiday celebrations, there are many celebrations unique to Jamaica including their distinct independence celebration. Moreover, despite having English as their language, Jamaican’s speak a bifurcated version of English with many remnants from the time of Shakesphere. Even the foods available in Jamaica are unique in that they are based on the culture and the types of vegetables and fish available in Jamaica. References to Jamaica in songs are clearly an oversimplication of the complex and unique culture that one can find in Jamaica. In fact, one could say that there are many nuances to Jamaica and no one lyrical representation no matter how inspired could in fact do them justice.

  50. QUESTION:
Do you feel sorry for this bride or what?
Someone just asked a question about an embarassing Best Man speeches. This made me think of my nieces wedding a few weeks ago.
1st At the rehearsal dinner, the best man gave a little speech on the grooms ‘Old’ girlfriend. I saw my niece cringe.

2nd The brides’ mom had a meltdown just before the wedding and took it out on my daughter (a bridesmaid) that got Me & others in a mood

3rd The ceremony was a few minutes late, and my MIL came to whisper in my ear the Brides dress zipper broke! Someone had a sewing kit and stitched it but they had to put a sash down her back covering the silk buttons that were so cute. The bride cried uncontrollably but came out 20 minutes later, (she was beautiful when she came out…no one noticed a thing)

4th The brides’ maid of honor gave a speech & made of joke of them hoping her husband never goes bald. (a little uncomfortable feeling for the bald guys in the room)

5th The bar was serving free alcohol and it wasn’t supposed too

    6th It started raining outside.
It was quite a day….but there were good memories too

    • ANSWER:
I do feel sorry for her. It’s already a very stressful time and it makes it worse when that many things go wrong.

But Jordan is right – a lot of couples have picture perfect weddings and their marriage ends in divorce. The truth is, a week or so after, no one really remembers and they are moving on with their own thing. So your neice can look back and laugh now that it’s all over!

A lot of marriages are full of inconveniences, disappointments, family drama, mistakes…she can consider her wedding day “training”…
