  13. QUESTION:
    Any traditional Indian wedding customs?
My fiance and I are planning our wedding. I am having one problem though, I am Italian by heritage, and the first member of my family to marry out of my families heritage. I am marrying an indian man, whos parents and a large part of family come from india. I would very much like to incorporate some of there traditions/customs into our wedding. He has asked not to have a tradtional ceremony so it would mainly be things for the reception. We are having an Indian jungle theme (5 ft trees made of flowers entirely of flowers all around the room and 3 ft trees for centerpieces. We will be having monkeys, frogs, birds, etc all made of flowers each table has a diffrent animal.) But this is just decoration, what can I do to make his mother more comfortable and happy with our wedding?

I dont know if this is relavent but his family is from Uttar Pradesh and hindu.
    His mother doesnt speak english

    • ANSWER:
Well, I’m Indian and my fiance is caucasian. We’re having some Indian elements in our wedding. I’ll be wearing an Indian lehenga choli I’m purchasing online. My wedding attendants (I’m not having bridesmaids) will be wearing saris. We’re planning on having henna.

We also don’t want the whole traditional thing (it’s way too much and way too expensive). We’re also playing Indian music for the reception. We’re also purchasing Indian invitations.

Hm, I think that’s all I can think of. If you want, you can do your wedding under a mandap, which is sort of a canopy/tent for the bride and groom and priest and parents. He could wear Indian clothing (sherwani).

Just talk to your fiance about what Indian elements he’d like to keep.

I also have to agree with the vegetarian thing. Many Hindus are vegetarian, so you’ll have to be careful to have food for them. Our wedding is entirely vegetarian, because both my fiance and I are vegetarians for ethical reasons, but we’re not really having many Indians come to the wedding (it’s a really small wedding).

I’m curious how this jungle theme will work, it sounds weird, but I’m sure you have a better picture of it than I do :) His mom probably will feel odd about the decorations, because usually Indian weddings involve tons of flowers and images of Ganesh (that elephant-headed god that everyone’s seen). Most Hindu weddings I’ve been to use tons of flowers, and there isn’t really a theme, so his mom might feel weirded about by animals made of flowers.

  14. QUESTION:
    inexpensive idea for Indian weddings?
Can i have some inexpensive ideas for Indian weddings decorations? the wedding is in July

    • ANSWER:
Im desi, and I’m doing little crystal strings/ceiling ornaments from the ceiling to give it a chandlier effect, this was like at a dollar store. I also got some indian style pillows (red velvet with gold ribbon) at Hobby Lobby for less than . I have 80 guests, I got 80 pillows to add to their chairs. I also am giving elephant style favors. I am also adding elephant candles from david bridals. http://www.davidsbridal.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplayView?storeId=10052&catalogId=10051&catentryId=6092272

I also got desi cake toppers (the girl is wearing a red sari, and the guy is wearing a sherwani).

  15. QUESTION:
Can you have a wedding that is a different culture than yours?
I’m not engaged but my friend and I were talking about our future weddings for fun. I said that I thought it would nice to have a Indian style wedding. I would serve Indian food and put up beautiful decorations. I would hire Indian dancers to entertain and I would learn some traditional Indian dances. My friend thought it was a nice idea but reminded me that I would have to marry someone who was Indian to do that. I also like the idea of an Asian or Latin American wedding. My ancestors all came from England and Scotland. Would it be okay to have an ethnic wedding if neither my fiancee nor I were a part of that group?
My question is really just about the reception. My family is not very religious and neither am I. The ceremony would be the usual thing only I would be wearing a colorful pretty dress instead of white.

    • ANSWER:
I say yes with a caveat – as long as you don’t include any aspects that would be disrespectful to the culture. For example, you wouldn’t want to recite sacred religious vows as a goof. Other than that, why not? Sounds fun.

  16. QUESTION:
I’m getting married in January next year. This is an inter-cultural wedding, I’m an Indian and he is american.?
I’ve no idea other than what I read in bridal guides about american weddings. Could you please suggest me some altar decoration, guest book and cake table decorations etc. Is it ok if my mom wears a saree and mom-in-law a dress? I’m planning to add some elements from hindu wedding to make it unique and sort-of fusion like:
1.Carrying a brass lamp instead of bouquet.
    2. Seven cirles around fire (the same lamp, I’m going to carry to altar) for our vows
    3. favors from India
    4. Crystal Bindi and Bagles with white gown
    I’ll appreciate any suggestion.

    • ANSWER:
yes your mom can use a saree and fmil a dress

alter just some nice flowers not to be mean kinda like the funeral type and one long one that goes on the alter kinda like this

      http://www.flowerbarn1.com/Wedding/CWF6621Large.jpg

ask the location that u are doing the wedding if you can transport the flowers or they have it as a donation some catholic churches require the flowers to stay for what reason i dont know. that way something like that can be used on the buffet or head table.

cake table i would have a small table large enough for the cake and have the cake cutters on the side

  24. QUESTION:
how much should my sweet 16 cost?
sorry if this question is a little long, but i hope you answer it anyway =)

I am having my sweet 16 in september 2010 :)
i know most people dont do this, but I will be having a kind of big party (I’m indian, and it’s almost a tradition in my family to have huge sweet 16s. i know most people wouldnt agree with this, but I’m from a well-off family and thats kinda what we do)

    the basics:
    - i will be wearing 2 seperate dresses for the party (not for fun, but because one is indian and the other is american. i wanted to incorporate both my cultures into my party)
    - it will be at either a country club or a hotel ballroom
    - it will be catered by a indian restaurant
    - there will be around 250-300 people (my family is hugeeeee, they will take up a large portion of the crowd)
    - i will be hiring a dj, photographer, and maybe videographer

this is what i want (not necessarily what am getting):
    - my party is a fire and ice theme, so i want atleast 1 or 2 ice sculptures
    - i want to order custom made sweatshirts as favors for the “kids” (people my age). ill think of something else as favors for the older people
    - i want my decorations to be AMAZING (sorry if that sounds bratty)
    - i want flame throwers or flame dancers or whatever those people are called lol (i seriously doubt im getting this one tho, parents deff wont agree)
    - i want to have a huge cake (one of those specially designed ones), and i want it to come out in flames (like how they have desserts on fire in those expensive restaurants)
    - i want to have really nice centerpieces (which i know is expensive)

but yeah thats all i can think of for now. my mom said she doesnt want the whole thing to cost more than ,000, since its not my wedding (and i kinda agree with that, it makes sense lol). based on what i want (and what im definitely having), how much do u think my party will cost?

    • ANSWER:
Wow, it sounds amazing!!! Now I want to go!!1
      I love indian dresses.

      Hotel depends –>probably 3,000
      Food–> about 15 dollars per person 4,500
Decorations can get pretty costly 1.000 maybe?
Ice sculptures—>300 each. my guess as an artist.
      Cake–>500.
      Dresses–>600
      Invitations–>700
      Gifts–>3,000

This is more or less…so about 12,000.

  25. QUESTION:
can you estimate how much this will cost?
sorry if this question is a little long, but i hope you answer it anyway =)

ThrowinTDs,SmokinTrees – i am certainly not watching mtv right now, nor do i need to “feel” rich. my family does have more money than average people, and we are entitled to spend it however we want. my parents have decided to throw me a party because they feel i deserve one. it is not yours nor anybody elses desicion to make or criticize (this goes for all the other arrogant, judgemental people that answered this question as well).

Kittens – i dont want a car nor do i want a house. my parents are throwing me a party and i am having one. end of story.

in my opinion – thanksss! :) my bday is like 6 months away but thank you anywayy :)

iloveyou and Angie Tygas wifey – thanksss :) you guys are two of the very few people that were actually nice to me :) i appreciate it!

bignsexyboy – i think your name is sufficient for others to realize who really is the selfish pig here. if you are jealous, there is no need to be rude to me. that was totally uncalled for
oh and by the way, dAmIAnOoO x)) – who do you think you are trying to to tell me when i should have my party??? if i want to have a sweet sixteen, i will do exactly that. you have absolutely no right to tell me what to do.

and if youre so concerned about money, you shouldve realized that it is a lot smarter to have a party at 16 because when you are 18, you have to spend money on college.

    • ANSWER:
Wow, that sounds like an episode of “My Super Sweet Sixteen”. I would guess it could cost anywhere from 000 to 000. With the basics only, possibly like 000. It really depends on where you live, as dj’s and venues, as well as catering really varies in price depending on where you live. Hope this helps, and have fun with you party!

    - i want to have really nice centerpieces (which i know is expensive)

but yeah thats all i can think of for now. my mom said she doesnt want the whole thing to cost more than ,000, since its not my wedding (and i kinda agree with that, it makes sense lol). based on what i want (and what im definitely having), how much do u think my party will cost?
btw, i asked this in the wedding section because you guys know a lottttttttt about pricing and this kinda stuff :) and plus there is no sweet 16 section lol

    • ANSWER:
20 to 30 grand depending on the country club.

  27. QUESTION:
how much do you think this party will cost?
sorry if this question is a little long, but i hope you answer it anyway =)

    • ANSWER:
This sounds like at least 10 grand, if not. It will probably be more than twenty, so i would try to cut back a little bit,

  28. QUESTION:
why are ppl spending so much on weddings now a days?
isn’t it sunah to have a simple nikah at a mosque and a valima with family and close members.

so y r there grand weddings where the spendings is like around ,000 and up? isn’t that just a waste of money?

y are ppl so into showing how much wealth they have to others?

does islam allow ppl to spend such great amounts of money on a wedding?

instead of spending all that money on bull shii decoration gigantic luxurious hall, it can be spent on a water project in africa that can save lives of an entire village.

    e.g.
(indian/pakistani weddings r one of the most expensive weddings known in the uk.) and in general. whether ppl can afford to pay 25,000-60,000 and up or not they will go all out of their way to spend every dime if they could.

y cant it be just simple and yet still a nice event?

y does it have to be so extravagant
it is already a happy event, but spending an extra ,000 on baskets with candles is like worthless. they can give a ticket for travel to another country or ummarah/hajj instead lol
25-35 is still considered cheap a bit.. 60,000 and up can hold the grand place!

sux doesnt it? lol.. i mean thats what i have heard

    • ANSWER:
I agree. A simple court wedding would be good for me =P
