Indian Wedding

You might have seen Indians getting married and they were probably wearing Indian wedding sari. India is a large country and has different cultures and traditions when it comes to getting married. The wedding dresses will have to depend on the culture of the place. The wedding dress will vary on the region that you are in.

However they wear Indian wedding sari, the type of Indian wedding sari also come in styles which are quite common to the place. To introduce the Indian wedding sari, it is a cloth with a certain length which is being wrapped around the body which follows a design or a pattern which is intricate.

The only thing that holds the Indian wedding sari are pins. It keeps the Indian wedding sari tucked in the body especially in the waistband. When it is wrapped around, there is a remaining part which is draped over the shoulder of the bride.

The “pallu” is known as the remaining length of the cloth when the sari has been wrapped around the body. This is known as the Indian wedding style of the dresses. The Indian wedding sari may come in a variety of colors depending on the theme of the wedding.

There are some Indian wedding saris that are cheap because the cloth that is used has a simple fabric while some of the Indian wedding saris are too expensive because of the property of cloth that is being used. Sometimes, some of the Indian wedding sari is being passed on as tradition goes.

When a woman is going to get married, some of the elders will pass on the Indian wedding sari that they have used during their wedding. This is the reason why Indian wedding sari is kept after the wedding ceremony. This makes it more memorable and for them, it brings some luck that can be passed on to the newly wed.

If you are not Indian but want to wear have an Indian wedding sari, you can have it if you want. However, it is quite hard to look for the sari fabric because you need to go to India in order to buy it. Some are sold in other boutiques especially from Indian boutiques. Most Indian wedding sari is colored red because it is the traditional color of a wedding sari.

The red color also represents happiness and good luck to the couple who are getting married. White Indian wedding sari will represent mourning for the Indians that is why they don’t go for it. No matter how you want to wear a white Indian wedding sari, you cannot wear it in India because for them, it represents sadness.

If you have been used to white wedding gowns, you will be surprised to see Indians wearing Red Indian wedding sari but its how they look at it. Indian wedding sari has been worn for a long time ago but nowadays, a lot of people are wearing saris and you can even see them everywhere.

Now that you know how a red Indian wedding sari is important to the Indian people, you can try looking for it if you want to have a wedding the Indian way. After all, wedding gowns have been common so why don’t you try to give it another taste. Wear Indian wedding sari on your wedding and wear it red.

Indian traditional marriages r mainly arranged marriages from the families… but love marriages also take place…. after the families approve then a good date is fixed.
Indian marriages mainly continue for 3 to 5 days… the rituals change from region to region…. then theres an engagement party where both the boy and girl puts rings on each others fingersss
first of all, after the engagement , the girl’s side has a ritual known as HALDI , where the bride is applied turmeric[haldi] in all parts of her body mainly hands and legs and face and neck. This same ritual also takes place at the home of the bridegroom where the boy is also applied haldi….
Then comes MEHENDI, where the bride’s palms r coloured with a natural colouring substance called mehendi.
then theres SANGEET , which means singing and dancing….everyone can join this, specially done by the ladies.
then comes the marriage day… fire is mainly involved. The boy puts SINDOOR [ a special red/orange colour] on the head [in the part of the hair]of the bride…. this is the main thing .. u must have noticed that, all most all Indian married women have SINDOOR on their fore head… the spinsters dont have it. and the widows clear it off. SINDOOR is a main symbol that u r married. There r a lot many other rituals with the chanting of the mantras or slokas from the sacred books. the bridegroom reaches for the brides house for marrying her and then after the marriage they go out to the boy’s house.
this is mainly a Hindu type of marriage. there r also other types of religions in India. they have different rituals….

  11. QUESTION:
What are appropriate gifts to give for an Indian wedding?
Hello from USA! My wife’s best friend who was her maid of honor is getting married in India (Mumbai). My wife would have been her friend’s maid of honor, but we just had our first baby born last week – the wedding is the last week of December. What is an appropriate gift and traditional Indian gift that my wife could give to her close friend, besides money?

    • ANSWER:
Traditionally close friends & family give jewels. However, if you cannot afford that (since you have a kid now), I would suggest some nice decorations for the home. That is what most indians do if they are not giving jewels. Is the friend going to stay in India or come back to USA? If coming back to USA. Give a gift card — my friend did that and it really helped me when my hubby and I moved into our new apartment.

  12. QUESTION:
What are appropriate Indian wedding gifts?
My wife’s best friend who was her maid of honor is getting married in India. My wife would have been her friend’s maid of honor, but we just had our first baby born last week – the wedding is the last week of December. What is an appropriate gift and traditional Indian gift that my wife could give to her close friend, besides money?

    • ANSWER:
Gold jewelry, but that is usually given by the bride’s parents. Some people give really nice sarees to the bride. Pretty much anything you would give to an American couple is good to give to an Indian couple; just make sure the voltage is compatible if you are giving an appliance.

  13. QUESTION:
What should a woman wear to an Indian wedding?
I’m going to India this August for my friends’ wedding. I’m so excited but have no idea what to wear! My friend suggests that I wear traditional Indian attire, but I don’t know if I should go with a saree (it’s got a skirt, midriff-bearing top and sort of a sash that goes over the shoulder) or salwar kameez (sort of a pantsuit with a fancy long tunic-type top and pants). Thanks in advance!

    • ANSWER:
Indian weddings involve a lot of singing and dancing. It is perhaps difficult to wear a saree (for a newbie) and dance. For this reason alone, I would recommend a salwar-kameez. There is also a third very popular option – a ghagra-choli (An Indian version of a skirt and a top).

  14. QUESTION:
What should and American wear to an Indian wedding?
I am an american teenager going with my mom to Ismaili Nikkah, and the reception. I am at a loss of what to wear because I have never been to an indian wedding. Would it be rude if I wore a sari or something more traditional, or should I wear formal western wear? Should I get a henna? haha. Any other tips and what the ceremony will consist of?
    Thanks SOO much!

    • ANSWER:
You’d wear what you’d wear at any other wedding. You can wear a sari if you want to, but regular dress is just fine, too. And yes, you can get henna if they invite you to. Just remember that it’s going to last AT LEAST a week! Really good henna can last 3 weeks.

I think you’ll enjoy an Indian wedding. They’re very different from American weddings… a lot more colorful and joyous, I think. Hopefully the couple is happy and their families are nice, because if so you’ll have a lot of fun. =)

  15. QUESTION:
What should i wear to an indian wedding?
Hi i’m going to my cousins wedding,, and thing is that its an indian wedding and i dont wear indian clothes but i need to wear something with an indian theme. So i was wondering for a indian style dress or something but i cant find anything.
    Im 5 foot 6 and a size 10

    Thanks on advance.

    • ANSWER:
ok i have planned many indian weddings as well as attended them! you definitely don’t have to wear anything “indian”!!! They love bright colors! so wear something bright and bold! you will definitely see lots of beautiful women wearing beautiful bright dresses! and between the food and dancing….those events are wonderful! The music is great! If there is going to be a traditional indian ceremony, it will be about 3 hours long but again very beautiful! lots of little customs that are really neat to watch!!!!! Good Luck!

  16. QUESTION:
I am attending a Mehndi party and also an Indian Wedding, what should i wear to both?
I am attending the Mehndi to meet the neighbor’s grand daughters who i am going to babysit the night of the Indian and American wedding. Is there a certain color i should wear at the wedding? I heard something about everyone wearing red for the Indian wedding.

    • ANSWER:
Since I’m Indian, I can give you a couple of quick pointers:
      - you will not be expected to wear traditional Indian clothing, in case you were worried about that. :) But it’s loads of fun, and can look extremely charming if you decide to do so.
      - In general, avoid pure black or pure white. White is worn at funerals, and black signifies mourning. Weddings are festive events, and bright colors are always welcome. Red is not mandatory for the guests, but traditionally the bride is dressed in red.
      - I’m not sure if this applies everywhere, but where I come from, the girls attending the mehndi wear yellow.
      - If the wedding is at a temple, bear in mind that some temples do not permit ladies to wear trousers, although I think this only applies to some of the bigger temples in India.

Hope that helps, and have fun!

  19. QUESTION:
What are appropriate accessories to wear as a guest to an Indian wedding?
I’m going to be attending a traditional Indian wedding in Kerala soon. I borrowed some gorgeous lehengas from an Indian friend to wear to the ceremony, but I’m not sure if I’m accessorizing them correctly. Can someone tell me if the following is appropriate:

1.For one of the lehengas, I bought a traditional gold choker necklace (described as a “polki stone necklace”) from an Indian costume jewelry store online. It’s a cheap bauble, really, but it looks a lot nicer than it costs. It’s sort of dangly and very pretty, but much less ornate than the other stuff I saw on the site. Does this sound like an appropriate choice, or should I stick to Western-styled jewelry?

2.Since my friend’s lehengas are a bit long on me, I’m wearing heeled, somewhat fancy sandals. Is it likely that I will have to take these off during the ceremony?

3.Are gold bangles on each arm (also nice-looking baubles) okay as the only hand/wrist accessories?

4.Do Indian women carry an evening bag or purse when going to formal occasions like weddings? If so, what should I be looking for?

5.This isn’t an accessory question, but I read somewhere that guests shouldn’t wear red, because that is traditionally the bride’s color. Is this correct? One of my lehengas is a gorgeous dark red, so I’m hoping I can still wear it.

    • ANSWER:
      * Jewelry will be noted with keen interest by ladies. Anything good wil be appreciated. Look to that it is not very fancy and bright.
      * Fancy sandals with high heels generally do not go well with Indian audience on a wedding. But you have to adjust a bit
      * Absolutely. Gold bangles are perfectly fine. You can also have a bracelet and watch in each of the hands.
      * Evening bag/purse culture is evident in cities like Bangalore/Chennai but it is not very adviceable to carry in other places. It may attract some curious looks on you.
      * Though red is traditionally bride’s colour, it does not stop you from wearing one. Infact, the traditional groom’s colour is white and all the males wear white (particularly in Kerala)

Hope this helps. I should appreciate for your wonderful plan and a great social thinking. Best of Luck!

want to look for young adult and or mom

    • ANSWER:
Anything you want. Even an evening gown is fine.
Just make sure its colored and NOT black. Black is inauspicious at a wedding. Of course, many people challenge this tradition today. But you don’t want to risk offending your host, I suppose.

If the gown is simple, accesorize it with a lot of heavy jewellery.
Silks and Chiffons are preferred fabrics.

Heavily silk embroidered (if not brocade or sequined) Sarees, Salwar kameezes, Ghagras etc are, of course, fine too.

One could dress up in semi-formals for the various wedding ceremonies.
The Indian wedding reception is a somewhat formal event compared to the wedding itself.
Of course, the idea of an Indian formal is not the same as a western formal.

I promised an old indian friend of mine that when he got marrried i would go to the wedding. I had always planned to go India, but for an extended period of time, at this particular time in my life its not possible. i was wondering how much i would get out of a 2 week visit to India, i know Agra should be a must. Please advise.

    • ANSWER:
Actually it would be better to start from the destination of the wedding… No matter which direction you take, India has somethign different to offer to any traveller… Apart from Rajasthan (where Agra is and also Udaipur, Jaipur, jaisalmar), I would recommend you try out South India (Shalimar Spice garden in periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, Munnar and its tea estates, Cochin and shopping come to mind)… Goa is perfect for a beach holiday.. Up north with Corbett, White water rafting are other options… So it really all depends on where you are starting your journey from and what kind of a holiday you would like – Beach, cultural, adventourous, Nature … By the way, Catch the movie ‘Monsoon Wedding’ and depending on whether you lucky or unlucky, the wedding you attending may just turn out to be like this…

  33. QUESTION:
what should i wear to an indian wedding?
i’m going to an indian wedding for the first time in a few days. from the looks of the invitation card, its going to be very fancy and expensive. i’m thinking i’ll wear a black dress, a-line, down to my knees, and there’s a little crocheting detail in the back. its kind of casual, but dressy none the less. the thing i’m worried about, though, is if the color black is appropriate, and should i dress as if i were going to a catholic wedding? because that’s what i plan to do.

    • ANSWER:
it is always fun to wear a sari or a punjabi to an indian wedding if it is a traditional indian wedding….but they can be pretty expensive so you can dress in something pretty dressy and be just fine. don’t worry too much about the color, although you would wish to avoid red or white as those are wedding and funeral colors respectively in the indian culture.

the couple and their families know that not all of their guests will dress according to their culture so your black dress sounds fine if you dress it up with nice black heals and some accessories. they really deck out for weddings so expect most of the guests to be pretty dressed up. if they wear saris, they will be very fine silk with lots of gold or silver embellishments.

  34. QUESTION:
I’m an American woman attending an Indian wedding here in the states. What should I wear?
This is the first time I’ve attended an Indian wedding and I don’t know much about traditional Indian wedding tradidtions or clothing. Is wearing a dress appropriate?

    • ANSWER:
Dont wear white or red. You could wear western style clothing or if you want to have a fun excuse to dress up in exotic fashion you could wear a typical outfit worn by indians to weddings. They wear salwar kameez(long tunic and baggy pants with a dupatta(shawl) worn over the chest/neck, a sari with petticoat to tuck it into and a sari blouse, or a lenga choli which is usually a long skirt and short blouse. All three of those ensembles can be found in varying degrees of formality from casual to the very intricate and elegant. If you wish to see some outfits at very decent prces you can checkout eshakti.com Ihave bought clothes from there before they are able to make your clothes custom or already sized and you can tweak the styles a little as well. Also check the web for some of the above mentioned outfits to get a better look at whats out there . Whatever you wear it ought to be a little more formal than usual as most indian weddings are elaborate. I am sure you will find the event to be very interesting and lovely.

is it ok from me to have a indian wedding even through im not indian?
i have always love india culture. I wanted my wedding to have a indian theme in it.

    • ANSWER:
You could honor the culture in color (Indian weddings have a lot of reds and golds), foods, and other unique aspects of an Indian wedding, however, I find it very disrespectful to have a traditional Indian wedding since you are not Indian. The Indian culture has been around for centuries and it not a trend, to some it is a life. IMO

  41. QUESTION:
Proper clothing for an Indian wedding?
We are going to a wedding for one of my husband’s cousins, we aren’t going to the religious bit, just the reception. My MIL offered to purchase me a salwar (but I didn’t feel comfortable with that, I know his cousins are wearing western style dresses) anyway the dress I am planning to wear is black, I know in traditional Anglo culture black can be frowned upon (although not so much anymore) I was wondering if wearing a black dress is a big faux pas for an Indian wedding.

    • ANSWER:
It depends on whether it is a Hindu or Muslim wedding. In Muslim culture, black is the colour of mourning, although as you say, not so much any more, as grooms have been seen to be wearing black suits (then again… :>) In Hindu culture, white is the colour of mourning.

If it is a traditional wedding, just make sure your shoulders and legs are covered. If not, go with fashion.

What is the usual tradition around Indian wedding receptions in India?
My understanding is that it is a party arranged by the groom’s family, in the groom’s city, to celebrate the wedding and to introduce the bride to their family and friends. It is usually held 2 or 3 days after the wedding.

Few other people say its just another function which happens the same day of the wedding in the same venue where people can give gifts, etc , which in my thinking, is part of the wedding function itself, not a reception.

I know there are no strict rules but what is the usual procedure, specially in Gujarati weddings?
