Monsoon Wedding Dresses

This is one store that can be out of the price 00004000 range for many women especially the dresses at Monsoon. It’s one of those shops you visit after you’ve made purchases at the usual cheaper high street stores to enjoy window shopping and looking at the glam dresses.

The brand is a fair trade company, meaning that the people involved in making the clothes are fairly paid for their time. Which is one reason why they clothes are more expensive. Another reason for more pricey items is that most of their items are hand made or hand finished using natural fibres rather than man made material.

A few years ago I cast Monsoon off as more suited to older middle class people and wouldn’t even consider dresses at Monsoon unless I was going in with my mother.

The ranges are more up to date now and modern and appeal to the younger crowd looking for a nice formal dress as well as the older crowd. I would say the casual clothing is too expensive for normal everyday wear. They aren’t unique enough from other high street stores to merit the higher prices.

As for the dresses it’s a different story. Not only do some people feel quite posh and sophisticated wearing a Monsoon dress, they also stand out from the crowd. The classic simple styles are elegant and sexy at the same time which is perfect for formal evening occasions such as balls, parties and weddings.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Eye on Monsoon Wedding Dress- when are the sales!!?
I am getting married in June 2008 so there is no immediate rush to get a wedding dress- I have however spotted one in Monsoon that is gorgeous! I will only buy it this year if it goes in the sale, but run the risk that they may not do the same design next year!!!
Does anyone know when they put wedding dresses in sales? at the moment I am visiting the store every week to check! (its the Miranda dress- size12).
I also need to check if its easy to adjust (in case I loose/out weight on!!)

    • ANSWER:
Hey girl if i was you ild snap it up pretty quickly, it’s quite rare for monsoon to put wedding dresses on sale and if they did, you would have to get in there really fast as im sure it would get snapped up really quickly!

if you would prefer to try and wait for the sale (which is a huge risk in my opinion!), they might have a mini spring sale around beginning march time (approx!) but i wouldnt wait- splurge girl! its your wedding dress you deserve to get what you want on your big day!

      Congratulations to you! x

  2. QUESTION:
    Wedding Dresses in the UK?
I am getting married in Barbados in April and want a nice dress, but nothing too fancy or long as it will be on the beach. I would like to avoid going to bridal shops if I can help it and am thinking about buying from a high street shop such as Monsoon, Debenhams, M&S etc. Can anyone help with any other shops in the UK that may sell nice bridal type dresses? I dont want to buy off the internet as I want to be able to go and try on without paying the extoritionate price that some wedding dresses in bridal shops cost. I am looking at spending no more than £200, would preferably like white (as it shows up on the photos for a beach wedding better) and am thinking of maybe a shorter or at least not right down to the floor length (as it will drag in the sand). Any help would be appreciated.
Sorry Jonny I cant access any of the links you gave.

White wedding dress/Ivory groom and flowergirl. Will it work???
We were going to get married at Easter in Cyprus, being 6 1/2 months pregnant i found a lovely green silk monsoon dress that was beautiful 4 the weather+suited the bump.I then went into premature labour and we had2transfer the wedding to sept 21st.the problem is iv’e only just got out of hospital after 3mths+now have to find a nice size 18dress as i wont have time to diet.ive been having probs finding a dress, the majority of the monsoon ones are sold out in larger sizes.
Today i went into a bridal dress wear shop+found the dress of my dreams (£550 though!!!) the dilema apart from the cost is that all dresses take 16wks 2order in, which will be after the wedding!they rang the stockist+ they have one 18 in white that i would have to get tomorrow as they are an international stockist+any other shop could order it. i wanted ivory as my partners wearing an ivory jacket and my daughter is wearing an ivory dress as i was going to wear green! Will the white+ivory clash?any other suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
I personally wouldn’t want to mix white and ivory if you can get around it. Can you get the delivery rushed? Is there another shop that might have it? Is there a size 20 or so in ivory that could be altered to fit? Best of luck getting your dream dress!

Me, my husband and our three kids are going to a wedding reception next week. It’s my brother’s wedding reception. He got married on a beach when he was on holiday with his now wife as they didn’t want the interfering family annoying their planning but left them to do the reception to surprise them, it’s an informal reception. Well we’ve got our son’s and my husband’s clothes sorted but not mine and our two girls who are 8 and 4.

  9. QUESTION:
How did you manage to have a nice wedding on a budget?
Me and my fiance are getting married in 2 years time. We are on a very tight budget though, and would like some idea’s on how to lower costs. I do want to get married in a church as I am fairly religious, and would like a half decent reception venue and a decent photographer so those are the things I’m not willing to compromise on, but things like the dress, cake, and invites I am willing to cut back on. I’m not into really fancy wedding dresses covered in bling that costs thousands, I’d like something simple and floaty so am thinking of getting a nice bridal dress from monsoon. I have also thought of getting an m&s wedding cake and decorating it myself with some ribbon and some nice fresh flowers on top, I just can’t fathom spending £500 on what is essentially flour, egg and sugar lol!

I would be interested to hear how you saved money on your wedding, and what things you think are essential to spend money on and where I could maybe save? Pictures would be lovely too, of your day and maybe your homemade invites or decorations!

    Thanks xx

    • ANSWER:
For my wedding, family members made the reception food. We had a cake, punch and finger food reception in the day because that was much less expensive than a sit-down meal. Our reception was held in a relative’s home. I had my dress made by a seamstress. A friend sang for free at the wedding. We had the florist at the grocery store do the flowers. They were beautiful and inexpensive.

  10. QUESTION:
What style of outfit for a Caribbean wedding?
We’re going to be getting married in the Caribbean in November – second time for both of us. I’ll be wearing a light beige linen suit with an untucked over-sized white shirt underneath.

My partner went shopping and came back with a mushroom coloured Monsoon cocktail dress. It’s a nice dress but it just didn’t say ‘Caribbean Wedding’ to me. She’s a cuddly size 16 (UK) and carries most of her weight around her middle (understandable after 3 kids!). I want to help her to find her something more suitable.

    Serious help needed please!!

  11. QUESTION:
What is the best bargain you have ever bought?
I bought my wedding dress in a Monsoon sale for 125 pounds (sorry – pound sign on my keyboard doesn’t work!!), and it is beautiful, after going to many bridal shops, it is the most amazing dress I have ever seen! It was orginally 250, I just wondered what your best bargain is?

    • ANSWER:
Today I went shopping, and the best bargain I found was a 60 dollar dress for 10 dollars.

However, I am only 12 so my idea of a great bargain may be different from yours.

  12. QUESTION:
Which wedding dress should I buy?
Eeeeeeeeeeee!!!!! Sorry. I’m so excited! I’m getting married in winter!!! Which of these two gorgeous wedding dresses do you think I should buy? I just need a few more opinions! Price doesn’t bother me. I think I like the second one a little better, but I was just wondering what other people thought! I’m small and slim. Thanks!

      Good luck

  19. QUESTION:
    Maxi dress to wedding?
I have my Dad’s wedding next week and I’m not comfortable in shorter dresses without black tights, and I know that it wouldn’t look that good for a spring wedding if I wore black tights so I have considered getting a maxi dress.

Do you think I could wear the following dress, I picked it because It’s classic and I could wear it again over the summer, but do you think it’s a bit too plain for wedding?

I’d really like to hear your opinions on this.

    http://www.monsoon.co.uk/maxi-dresses/dally-jersey-maxi-dress/invt/85331088/#

I am not a bridesmaid as the bride (My soon to be step-mother) has three daughters already, and my Dad has two daughters, it’s a small wedding as it is both their second.

    • ANSWER:
I LOVE the dress! So many people seem to go for printed dresses at weddings, but I think with some beautiful jewellery to dress it up – fab! It’s also really easy to dress down so you’ll get loads of wear out of it. I’d go for layers of vintage looking gold jewels with a really simple clutch bag and sandles. Just pick something that reflects your personality and make it your own :)

      Have a fantastic day :)

  20. QUESTION:
What do you think of this dress for an October wedding?

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Gorgeous-MONSOON-Roberta-Dress-Size-18_W0QQitemZ130150112399QQihZ003QQcategoryZ314QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I have tried it in a size 10 (not 18 as in the pic – I couldn’t find another pic of it anywhere), and it looks nice on. The wedding is at a safari park with safari after the reception!! It’s impossible to find something suitable for this occasion.

I was thinking of this dress with a black shrug and accessories, but I’m not sure about the pattern. Be honest, please.
This is UK size 10, by the way. Don’t know US equivalent. 6? Anyway, I’m aged 32.

  21. QUESTION:
A couple of questions about wedding?
Ok, I have a few questions to ask:

    a) Do you like these dresses for the bridesmaids:

    http://www.weddingo.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/20080627_008010734420_lrg.jpg

    http://debenhams.scene7.com/is/image/Debenhams/20081031_008010813320?$ProdLarge$

Which one is your favourite out of these ones? Do you think that the gold will look ok? And will a gold dress go with red flowers? And if you don’t like any of them, or don’t like the colours, can you please post a picture of a dress that you would like, or colour scheme?

    b) Is four bridesmaids, one maid of honour and one flower girl too much? They are two of his sisters, two of my sisters and one of his younger female cousins. Their ages are:
    BM: 33, 31, 31, 22
    MOH: 28
    FG: 5

    c) I’m really having trouble picking out a wedding dress, does anyone have any ideas or pictures of a wedding dress that they like? And, if they can, do they have any hairstyle pictures for brides and/or bridesmaids that they could put up here?

Please try to not write negative comments, because I really have looked everywhere and have either not been able to find something, or have not been able to pick between two.

    Thank you!

P.S. I know that there are a lot of questions and I am sorry about that but please try to help me!

  22. QUESTION:
Help me choose a dress for friend’s wedding? Panicking!!!?
Long story short, best friend’s wedding in a week and a half. Got the dress out for a try on and… I’ve put on weight, doesn’t fit anymore =( So I need a new dress but I’m on quite a tight budget and time restraint.

I have: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Monsoon-Dress-Size-16-/110663381322?pt=Women_s_Clothing&hash=item19c40d314a#ht_727wt_1060 which I bought for an asian wedding but I’m thinking this is too bright for an English wedding…?

I couldn’t find a picture of the other option I have but it’s a sort of blush pink chiffon and black brocade 50s style dress. Think the black might be a bit eveningy though.

Love: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300537123446&ssPageName=STRK:MESINDXX:IT#ht_1079wt_826 but again think it might be a bit eveningy?

Love http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220752857488#ht_500wt_1075 but not totally sure it will fit my hips…

    Or maybe try for: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280632935414&ssPageName=STRK:MESINDXX:IT#ht_1102wt_1060
    or

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360312596226&ssPageName=STRK:MESINDXX:IT#ht_3707wt_902

Tried Tk Maxx and was a total fail. Argh dunno, what do you think?? Any other suggestions?? Slightly panicking!!!
It’s a small wedding, sit down meal at http://www.kingscotebarn.co.uk/

    • ANSWER:
Main question is where is the wedding and reception taking place? is it going to be a sit down meal and maybe followed by and evening do. If it’s a sit down meal then I would go for the blue dress 2 it’s formal more than evening so would be fine for the afternoon. If your talking an informal buffet somewhere then I would go with dress 1 it is bright and cheerful but nothing wrong with that for a English spring wedding.

Have you tried Primark or Asda I know the quality is not brilliant but they are cheap enough for a one of event.

Go for the blue no 2 it’ll be perfect for that setting. Nice place your friends very lucky and I’m sure you’ll all have a fantastic day.

  26. QUESTION:
Do you now where is the biggest Monsoon shop in London ?
Where else could I look for a nice dress to attend a wedding?

    • ANSWER:
Debenhams have some really nice dresses with matching jackets. I recently attended a wedding and bought mine from there. Monsoon has gorgeous stuff but its that bit more expensive. I found Debenhams had a mixed price range.
Have a look online first to see if there is anything that takes your fancy!

  27. QUESTION:
Can a young child wear white to a wedding?
My partner and I have been invited to a wedding in a couple weeks. Our daughter will be five weeks old at the wedding.
We got a dress for our daughter yesterday and showed it to the bride today. The bride is my partner’s sister. This is the dress: http://www.monsoon.co.uk/Dresses/Baby-Girl-Meadow-Dupion-Dress/invt/65827626
The bride has kicked up a fuss over the colour of the dress. She’s not wearing white herself and is already letting her mother wear an ivory coloured dress. It’s not even going to be obvious what colour dress my daughter is wearing because she’ll be wrapped up in a blanket to keep her warm.

    • ANSWER:
The bride would have to be insane to think that a newborn baby who will likely be sleeping in a carrier the entire night will steal her thunder. The bride should get over herself. I would either stop talking about the matter and have my child wear the white dress anyway, or I would get a different dress to avoid more drama. It’s up to you.

  28. QUESTION:
Monsoon dress – missing from website! Need name!!?
2 weeks ago, on Monsoon’s website I saw the most gorgeous dress I have ever seen! I wanted to try it on for my sister’s wedding in August. My local shop did not stock it, but the sales assistant gave me the numbers for three larger stores no too far away.

She advised me to get the name and code from the website and phone the larger stores and they would lay it aside for me til I could go and try it on. But now the dress has disappeared from Monsoon’s website!!

Is there anywhere I could try looking for it?? It is a long, floaty dress, one-shouldered in cream, kind of fading into shades of lilac at the bottom.

I was supposed to be going on Tuesday with my sister and it’s the only dress that’s really ‘spoke’ to me!!

    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Whilst I can’t give you the info you need perhaps this might help.
Just recently my friends daughter was getting married and all bridesmaids outfits were bought a year in advance. As one of the little bridesmaids had a sudden grow spurt -they dress and bolero didn’t fit and the there was no stock readily available in the shops, I wrote to their head office and pleaded insanity!! They ‘found’ the item and shipped it to my local store -when I went to pay it was discounted. Success all round.
So get the Head office contact detail and write a nice letter -I bet there are some in a warehouse somewhere!!

  29. QUESTION:
    What dresses to wear?
I brought two lovely long and flowing pastel green dresses in the monsoon sale. But decided as my bridesmaids heights are very different i.e one being very tall and the other shorter and a bit more round that they looked silly and unflattering to the shorter one.

  31. QUESTION:
    Wearing to a wedding?
Im going to a wedding at the start of may, i was planning on wearing a monsoon maxi dress and flat sandals…but now i got a chanel 2.55 bag and a brand new pair of peeptoe louboutins (santa was good!) so what would go well with them? the bag and shoes are black, the bag is black with gold chain?

    • ANSWER:
      Hi

Lucky you!!!! As you have the black bag and shoes you are lucky that they will go with anything!! Keep jewellery to gold thou to match the bags chain detail.

If it was me I think id go with something classy. The monsoon maxi dress is lovely but I think its maybe a little too long for a wedding but depends on your height/figure.

If it was me id go for something like the monsoon carrie print dress as the black in the belt etc would really go great with your black chanel bag and louboutins.

  34. QUESTION:
Would you go to a Frog’s Wedding?
Frogs ‘marry’ to bring rain to Bangladesh

“More than 250 people in northern Bangladesh have attended a wedding ceremony between two frogs as part of a ritual to bring rain to the parched region, a newspaper said Friday.
The “bride” and “groom” came from two neighbouring villages 110 kilometres (68 miles) north of the capital Dhaka, according to the Bengali paper Jugantor.

Villagers organised the wedding ceremony because the region was suffering a water shortage as it waited for monsoon rains to arrive, according to school teacher Noor Mohammad Kalon, who was a guest on behalf of the “groom.”

“More than 250 men, women and children came to the wedding. We all danced and sang,” the teacher, 42, told AFP by telephone, adding that the guests were served a traditional wedding feast of rice, lentils, fish, beef and sweets.

“The bride and groom were in special wedding dress. We blessed them in the ceremony and released them in a nearby pond afterwards.

“Last night there was rain. I believe it was because of the wedding.”

Oh Golly- sorry, I meant a TU and clicked the wrong box! xxx

    • ANSWER:
Well, i’ve read that you need to kiss many frogs before you find your prince…

Seriously? Its tradition mixed liberally with superstition…it happens in South India as well. Fear of a drought can push people to take drastic measures. For us who have no experience of living in a parched land, this would be beyond our comprehension.

  35. QUESTION:
Pregnant and have nothing to wear to a friend’s wedding! HELP!?
I’m going to attend my friend’s wedding in Cyprus next month… basically, in a very hot country at a time when here in the UK, the Autumn line is gracing the shops. I’m stuck for something to wear that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. I’m also quite limited because a) it’s a black tie event and b) it’s not the ‘done thing’ to wear black as you could have done at UK weddings. I have no idea what to wear when a) all occasion maternity dresses don’t seem to be under £100!! b) the nicest ones are unfortunately black (and therefore a bit more slimming) and c) short (I can’t wear short dresses, so no point in recommending Asos because their maternity clothes are clearly designed for women who don’t retain water in their legs during pregnancy)

I found a £60 dress at Monsoon, which I felt covered my arms nicely, and the shape slims you down a bit and makes the bump look cute. I bought it however about a month ago when my legs were still in better shape. The dress sits JUST at the knee, but any movement, and it’s easy to see the knees (the thickest part of my legs sadly!) I had originally thought I’d wear leggings or dark tights with it, but my friend then told me that it’s about 30-35 degrees celsius in Cyprus!!!

The wedding is a black tie event, and this dress is not up to par for such an event, but I’m hoping they’ll forgive me for being pregnant and not looking as glamorous as they will be.

Does anyone know how I can dress this up a bit more to make it more chic, fit for a black tie event, and find a solution for the heavy legs and knees??! I’d really appreciate any advice

Here’s a link to the dress.

    http://www.monsoon.co.uk/New-Arrivals/Fusion-Glitterati-Dress/invt/75205888

    Thank you for your help

    • ANSWER:
It’s a lovely dress and I consider it fairly dressy for a wedding in a hot climate. If you want to make it more dressy perhaps add some long earrings and pull your hair up in a messy bun as it’ll keep you cooler. Shoes wise, try and find a nice flat pump as i’m sure you can’t face heels.

Legs wise, I’m not really sure what to suggest. I think you’d be fine not wearing tights or leggings as no one will judge your legs and besides, your pregnant. Most people will be more interested in due dates and names than what you are going to be wearing.

I’m sure you’ll be forgiven for being less glamorous than usual. Just show off that Pregnant lady glow and congratulations!

I have a june wedding, found a stunning Maxi dress! Monsoon meadow maxi dress http://www.monsoon.co.uk/all-dresses/meadow-maxi-dress/invt/85327818/#

  37. QUESTION:
What would you accessorize a black dress with for a wedding?
I am going to a wedding in Feb next year and there will definately be snow or slush on the ground as I live in Finland.

I have the black ribbon dress from Monsoon which has a corset and a full 50s style calf length net skirt with a floral ribbon design all over. It has loops on the waist to add a ribbon belt. As it will be cold I also have a nice Laura Ashley back wool coat to wear outside and it has flecks in the wool which sparkle and catch the light.

I still need to get shoes, jewellery, tights and a shrug or a bolero as I want to cover up a bit at the reception but I don’t want to wear all black as I am going to a wedding not a funeral! Any suggestions please?

p.s. I did read some place you shouldn’t team black with colour as it makes the colour look brighter but I love colours like teal and peacock blue though… I would like to keep the outfit 50s style as well right down to the shoes but am thinking peep toes might not be wise in the snow :o (

    • ANSWER:
well firstly i think that your dress sounds lovely, you are right about not putting colour with black – it is because black is very classy to wear but colours cheapen it. as for peep-toe heels – well i don’t think they look good when the lady is wearing tights so i suggest a closed-toe shoe instead. i have created an outfit for you (dress and coat are obviously not the real items you have but they are there as an example): http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=1603056

Its really lovely: informal and formal at the same time. Match it with navy (or is the sash black?) and silver. Make sure you are happy with it, and it will look amazing if you feel good when you put it on. If you still aren’t sure when you look in the mirror: take it back x

  42. QUESTION:
I only have 3 days on our return from greece to clean my silk wedding dress up for our party we have?
please does anyone have any tips to share that will clean my dress up a bit for our party back home. no particular stains just typical grime marks at top and along the bottom and the bust seam from it being too hot as we got married in Santorini last Friday.

I dont have time for dry cleaners as return to uk three days before party (we are still in Santorini as I ask this question). my dress is light silk, ivory, and from monsoon.

    thanks in advance
    Leah x

    • ANSWER:
Dry cleaning is your best option. They can do it in a day or two but may charge a little more for “same day” or “next day” service. They may do a “spot” clean for you without actually cleaning the whole thing, you can ask if they do that sort of thing. Good luck and congrats!

  43. QUESTION:
    Wedding Dress?
I’m getting married in December in Sri Lanka. We are marrying inland beside a lake with a rainforest and mountains as the background rather than by the ocean. I’m not sure what to wear, its going to be about 20 deg C and there are traditional girls and drummers there.

Heres the thing, I’m not fussed on the whole white/ivory dress concept, I think gold would be lovely and special. I think it will go with my golden blonde hair which I will wear down curly.

I am size 12 on the bottom, size 16 on the top. I have a big bust, big belly, no bum and skinny arms and legs. I am quite fair skinned and blue eyed.

    http://www.monsoon.co.uk/invt/15206315?t…

What do you think, would it be suitable?

    • ANSWER:
If you have a large bust, then an empire waist is not for you. You need to give yourself the illusion of a waist and take the attention away from your bust and belly. Go with a dress that has capped sleeves or spaghetti straps to show off your skinny arms.

  45. QUESTION:
    Tesco dress at Wedding?
Have a family wedding in a few weeks time. Finding it difficult to find a nice dress, tried all of the usual places, i.e Monsoon, Debenhams but cant find any I like. A couple of days ago I bought a beautiful shift type dress out of Tescos for £16 pound to wear for a night out. I have now came to the idea of keeping it for the wedding as I absolutely love it. I am just a little anxious about what people might say if they find out it is from Tesco. To be honest I would have bought this dress even if it was £100 in monsoon etc. my mum and friend keep telling me to wise up and wear it as who is going to know. Right enough it is a plain dress with no distinguishing features etc. I plan to glitz it all up with jewellery, sandals and a wrap/bolero. What I want to know is, is this dress ok for a wedding. It has the right style as an occasion dress and I know that I would definitely wear it again. I feel as though its not good enough and that I should be buying a more expensive dress just in case someone asks were I bought it and can say Debenhams etc.

I am not a clothes snob and will happily shop in new look, peacocks and tescos etc.

    Advice please….

i love this one it would be great for curvier figure, its fited at the waist but hides all wobbly bits eg tops of arms, tummy but sexy and elegant too.

well i picked out some styles that would complement plus size girl best, but things you should go for a little cleavage(bigger girls got them so show them off!-tastefully), high waisted(just under bust can be the slimmest place on alot of women and you need it fiited in some place to give u a figure), also dont go for thin straps/strapless as this makes width of arms centre of attention.)
but idk your figure or style so here are some more from monsoon you should definatly try them on!
