   Hello all! I am so frustrated! I am petite (5’2″) and curvy (140 lbs). I’m not plus-sized, but there isn’t a straight line anywhere on me. When I search for wedding dresses for the petite and curvy, I either get plus-sized dresses, or dresses to enhance curves. What looks fresh and innocent on others looks va-va-voom on me.      Hi I am only 5ft although I am a UK size 10 but I do have a flat chest and big hips so my dress type is limited

     the only advise I can give is to go to a couple of bridal stores and try on all dress shapes untill you find one that you feel and look best in.

     I would guess by your description that you might siute a trumpet shaped dress or A-line, with a dipped heart shaped top half. And if your arms are heavy (like mine tend to be) a small lace jacket?

   Need suggestions for petite beach bride dresses. It would be a second wedding.?
   What companies have petite beach bride dresses. It will be a second wedding for the both of us. We want to be married on the beach in the Caribbean. The wedding will be simple. I am 50, but am in great shape and look young. I’m 5’1″. What color wedding dress would be appropriate or does any color go. I don’t know if a long or short dress would be appropriate.

     How about a sundress? You can wear any colour you like (including white). Any colours go, up to you. White is simply a popular Western bridal colour, you can wear any colour you like. Beach weddings typically have light long flowing dresses but some brides have short gowns.

     You could also consider a light pantsuit or tea length dress.

     If you want to seem more casual and less “wedding”, then go for a coloured simple sundress or paintsuit. As for the length, short is typically more casual, but you may not consider it appropriate for your age. This is entirely up to you, the length of gown.

     If you go with a white sundress, you can make it more “beachy” and casual by adding aqua coloured jewellery.

     I had a friend your shape who wore a strapless sweetheart neckline, and got those sticky rubber boob-bra things that they sell at David’s Bridal and Macy’s, and everything looked proportionate and beautiful. Even if it has straps, a sweetheart neckline with a ruched bodice is going to give you the most flattering upper body.

     A halter-style top will also enhance your bust… but honestly they look a little tacky.

     Don’t choose anything with a straight-across-the-top-of-the-bust neckline, like a typical spaghetti strap.

      Sounds like nobody has REALLY been answering your question. Shorter ladies (thick or thin) should wear a dress with a long bodice type of fit. DO NOT wear an empire waist, it will shrink you.       I’m almost exactly your size. My first pick was a mermaid style dress that accentuates my tiny waist, but it isn’t SO tight fitting over the hips, so as not to accentuate my lack thereof. I think strapless is definitely more flattering too, and as someone else mentioned, having cups sewn into a strapless can go a long way! I also ended up getting another dress (Maggie Sottero something or other) That was a corset style on top, but then just flowy light a-line on bottom, which, again, accentuates the waist, but disguises a lack of hips. So if you have ‘shape’ in the hips area, a mermaid style would look amazing. If you wish to hide a lack of ‘shape’ like me… a tight fitting corset top with a-line bottom would look perfect!

      anything with a straight skirt will make you look taller, as opposed to a full or aline skirt. certain styles will make your boobs look larger too. a dress with a top in the straight-across, boob-tube style (as opposed to a round or v-neck) will make your boobs look bigger. avoid something low cut as it will only highlight what you ain’t got!

    Can anyone tell me a store that sells petite size wedding gowns in the NJ/NY area?
    I am super petite…I was just fitted for a bridesmaid dress for my friends wedding and I’m a 0. I cannot “visualize” what a gown is going to look like when they pin a size 12-16 on me…I’m sorry but it’s impossible! I’ve only found David’s Bridal…is there any others?

      We live in NJ and my best friend is a 0 too. She got her dress at David’s after having the same problem – most samples at other stores are a 10 or larger and she can’t visualize. If you can’t find a dress in your size, ask them if they can order a sample smaller or if they can get a smaller sample. If not, then you either have to be able to visualize your dress altered and fitting well or just stick to places that carry your size.

      I would suggest trying everything on. If you see a dress you like, try it on. I’m petite too and when I had first gone dress shopping thought that I would not be able to wear certain styles and I ended up getting a dress that was the opposite of what I had originally thought. The key to finding a dress is comfort and fit and a style that won’t over-power your small frame.

      * A-lines usually work great–even on petite women and are usually the most flattering.
      * Don’t do drop waisted dresses–this cuts you off at the hips and actually makes petite women look stumpy most of the time.
      * Sweetheart necklines are pretty, but make sure it fits properly because oftentimes they are created for bigger busted women.
      * Be careful with mermaid and trumpet style dresses. Sometimes they look good, but many times they don’t because they don’t fall in the right places for a petite person and sometimes do not do anything to flatter the figure.
      * To help elongate, take your hair away from your neck and put it up. This creates an illusion because it lengthens your neck and makes you look taller.

      Really, try everything on and when you find the dress you’ll definitely know.

      I harp on this a lot but go to a locally owned bridal shop. You will get a good price and personal attention. Remember their income is generated by word of mouth. Take your mother with you and only your mother. She is the only person who isn’t afraid to tell the truth. Once there the owner/manager of the shop will lead you to a good starting point. Try on gowns and when you have found the right one, you will know it. The guidelines that people give you aren’t worth a hill of beans because everyone’s body is different and how you feel in the gown will truly affect how you look in the gown. Oh and after you and your mother have the argument in the shop, dry your eyes and take her to lunch.

    Wedding dresses for body types?
    I was just wondering: if you are a perticular body type, should you choose a certain style of wedding dress. I’m 5’2 and petite, so is there any particular style i should avoid or a certain style that would look really good. thank you

      I just found this article a couple weeks ago about the best dress styles for different body types, it has great suggestions on what to look for and what to avoid:

      If You’re Petite
      Look for: Trumpet, sheath, and modified A-line gowns. Find a style with a waistline above your natural waist, to make the lower half of the dress (and therefore you) appear longer. The fabric is up to you―you can pull off a high sheen. But the detailing should be small (no huge bows) and limited to the bodice, to draw the eye upward.

      Keep in mind: Be wary of dresses with a dropped waist, which will make your legs seem nonexistent, and ball gowns―it’s easy to get lost in that voluminous skirt. Also, avoid anything calf-length, which will make your legs look short.

      You should probably try on anything with a A-line. Those seem to be the most flattering on a petite frame. And maybe also stay away from halter top styles…they have a tendency to make you look shorter.

    Do wedding dresses come in a silver color, rather than white?
    This question is probably a little weird but I have been trying to help my friend plan her wedding for awhile now and this is part of her dream dress…I know dresses can come in ivory, pearl, and I’ve even seen a pinkish/rose but what about a white blueish/silver color? Also have you seen one with silver embrodery or some kind of silver sparkles..she wants something very unique and silver is her theme for now.       She has dresses that come in a variety of colors. Some are bluish/ silverish. There is also diamond white which isn’t quite white but it isn’t ivory either. They also sell dresses in petite for shorter people so there aren’t as much alterations. (just note even if the picture is in white it may come in a silver color- you have to check what varieties it comes in)

      I always like to remind beach wedding brides that it is usually breezy on the beach. So look for a dress that is not going to be blowing every which way. If you like black on the dress I see no reason to not include it since your bridal party is also wearing black. Seems a bit dark for a beach wedding but to each his own!

      Try and A-line gown and don’t add a petticoat underneath to make it poofy.

      I’m as short as you (although I weighed more when I go married) and I wore an a line dress with a train and a long veil. It did not look overwhelming on me because it was not poofy on the bottom.

      Just keep in mind that less is more. Find one detail that flatters you and narrow down that way.
