Rent Wedding Dress

Before you give your wedding vow “to have and to hold, ’til death do us part”, you’ll have to decide if you are going to own or rent one of those lovely wedding dresses on the rack.

Heads or Tails

It’s never too early to shop for your wedding gown, and shopping around is just making sure you’ve seen everything before deciding on one of the wedding dresses you’ve tried on. You can initially check out the bridal sites on the Internet and compare services, as well as prices.

It’s also a fact that 10% of the wedding budget goes to the wedding dress, so it’s a toss up between renting or owning your wedding gown. But at this point, decide if you’re going to buy your wedding gown off the rack, rent it, or have one of those wedding dresses copied and modified for your custom-made bridal gown.

There are only two reasons for buying or renting a wedding gown – one is for sentimental reasons, and the other is for practical reasons. If you want to keep the wedding gown and pass it on to your daughter or daughter-in-law, buy your wedding gown, but if you think you can’t be lugging a wedding gown around all those years, then rent the designer gown that looks good on you.

Tips in Renting Wedding Gowns

Bridal gowns are rented out for as high as 0 or as low as 0. Some rental shops will charge you a package deal that includes accessories. Visit the shops and personally try on the gowns for size and select the veil, tiara, shawl, and other items to go with it.

Depending on the time of year, you will have to rent the gown ahead of time – a year before the wedding if your wedding month falls on those peak seasons. June brides and prom nights can trigger a price increase in rentals.

Carefully check the wedding dresses for stains, dirt, and rips before signing a rental contract, and ask about the penalties for damaged gowns. Pick up the gown on the agreed date. Should there be any further alterations, these can be done immediately before the date of the wedding.

Tips in Buying Your Bridal Gown

Since most bridal shops won’t allow you take pictures of the wedding dresses in their shops, you’ll have to take along a friend who has a good fashion sense. Before you put on the dress, take a look at the rows of dresses that fall under your price range of 00 or 0, whether you want a brand-new designer dress or a discounted gown.

Before stepping into a shop, make up your mind about the gown’s length, sleeve style, neckline, and waistline. You can make the task easier by having a picture of your ideal wedding gown or something close to it so that the shop consultant can immediately find the gown that you want. Don’t go for too much alterations or modifications as the dressmaker will charge more than you expected.

Whether you’re buying or renting, don’t let the salespersons intimidate you and hurry you to a sale. Remember it’s your wedding and you want to look your best. Now, it’s up to you if you’re going to buy or rent one of those wedding dresses.

Where to rent wedding dress in Glasgow?
Hi, I live in Glasgow and I got engaged not long ago, I am already thinking of different ways to save money for my wedding and would like to rent a wedding dress but I don’t know where to go. Any idea?

    • ANSWER:
you might be better trying dresses on in shops and trying to get one second hand or in a sale, a lot of dresses being sold have never been worn either

  3. QUESTION:
where can i rent a wedding dress in northeast ohio?
I’m trying to do a low budget wedding this summer. My fiance and I are both young and don’t have a lot of money. I’d like to rent my dress but am not sure where to go. Also, is it wrong to rent a dress? I know that it’s for my most special day, but i’m wearing it only one day and then what am i supposed to do with it? Any help is appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
I don’t think you’re crazy for wanting to rent a dress. The idea is that you’re supposed to preserve it for your daughters…kind of antiquated, if you ask me..,..my parent’s got married in the early 80′s and if you’ve seen pictures of the typical wedding dress from that time, you’ll know what I mean when I say, there is no way I was going to wear that dress! Not that it wouldn’t have been special, but aside from the fact that I was never going to fit in it, it just wasn’t me. And on your special day, you should be wearing a dress that flatters you, your body and makes you feel like the most beautiful woman alive!

I bought a beautiful (& cheap) dress off a clearance rack at David’s bridal a few years ago for my wedding. It was 5…and the only difference in it and the others on the regular racks (other than a 0+ price tag) was it was last year’s model…well, what do I care if it wasn’t the “current model?”

As one other reply had suggested, there are some nice bridal consignment shops you may want to check as well.

  4. QUESTION:
Where can I rent a wedding dress in North Carolina?
I recently got engaged, and I’m just starting to formulate some wedding plans. I haven’t set the date yet but the wedding probably won’t be for at least a year or two. I’m thinking of saving money by renting a wedding dress, since I don’t want to have to own one.

Does anyone have any experience with this in the North Carolina area? I live near Greensboro, NC, but I’m willing to drive a bit. Anyone know how to find people who rent out wedding dresses?

    • ANSWER:
I have seen nothing for rental of wedding gowns in this area( I live in the eastern part of the state toward Wilmington NC.
For low cost you might want to try
lightinthebox.com or landybridal.com and then sell it or you might find one on either Craigslist.com for your area or Ebay. You can always resell it if you don’t want to keep it My niece bought hers on ebay at 700 and sold it on ebay for 800 Can’t beat that for a deal.

  5. QUESTION:
Im looking to rent a wedding dress in Colorado, any suggestions on where to start?
My fiance and I are paying for our wedding by ourselves so we are on a budget. I live in Colorado. Does anyone know of any bridal salons, other places or designers that have wedding dresses for rent? Any info is appreciated

    • ANSWER:
Have you considered buying used instead of renting? Often times buying used is cheaper than renting a dress. (Not to mention the fact that there is a larger selection and you don’t have to stress about anything spilling on the dress all night :)

Try http://www.preownedweddingdresses.com – they have (literally) thousands of wedding dresses- starting as low as 0.

  6. QUESTION:
Is there a way to rent a wedding dress?

  7. QUESTION:
Where can I rent thai wedding dress in Long Beach, Los angeles or around these two areas?
my friend is ready to marry, but thai traditional requires to have thai traditional clothes for wedding. she has her american style gown already, so she just wants to rent the traditional clothes since she’s gonna wear it one time only. I tried to search many times I could not find any website. Hope to get help from here.

    • ANSWER:
she should probably have done this the other way around because it is easy to find american wedding gowns for rent in california but renting a silk thai dress is going to be hard to do. you can try Thai Bridal at 14441 brookhurst street in garden grove. (714 775 4611) i know they rent bridal gowns. most the women who work there speak vietnamese and have broken english, but you can check with them.

the only other thing i can think of is to get a one-shoulder long gown in red or gold and add your own beads and a wide gold beaded belt and sort of do your own. that would be cheaper than buying a real one. you can find stuff to bead them with at any craft store like michaels or ben franklin’s. i just got done gluing over 300 crystals on my granddaughters ice skating dress for a competition which saved me about 250 dollars on buying one already done. it took two evenings to do it.

where to rent a wedding dress in the uk?
time of crunch and couldn’t find a wedding dress at affordable price? so im thinking of renting one
do you know where in the uk i can do that at reasonable price?

    • ANSWER:
Why don’t you try ebay.co.uk? You might get a dress of your own for the price it costs to hire one. I managed to buy a dress (worn once then dry cleaned) for £140 (buy it now price), brand new it cost them £900. It’s absolutely gorgeous and looks brand new, I just need to get it taken up but it’s still a bargain! I saw some people selling brand new ones as well for various personal reasons :s.

I made sure I went to view it to their house before getting it, and I’d advise you do the same. You can put your postcode and you can choose the distance of the sellers so you can see how far you’d be willing to travel.

  16. QUESTION:
Did you rent your wedding dress?
I’m interested in possibly renting my wedding dress, but wanted to know more about the experience and quality of the dresses available, please let me know if you did rent your weddding dress, how was it and would you recommend it? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
I didn’t – but now I’m kind of wishing I had. My dress was fairly inexpensive (0 on sale at David’s Bridal) but even so, now I’ve got this wedding dress hanging in my closet that is just taking up space. I’m never going to use it again, but I don’t want to get rid of it either. Wedding dress rental seems to be a growing trend, but even so there aren’t a lot of places that offer that option, so your choices are going to be a lot more limited than if you purchase one.

      Good luck!

  17. QUESTION:

Thats not to say, renting is bad. Its just not for me.

Divid bride are ruid ppl not one store but every single i have been. i need to know location of stores where i can rent wedding dress in bay area. Please if know the name of store or address please tell me.

    • ANSWER:
Congratulations on your engagement and wedding!

It is smart to try and save some money. It sounds like you need a Muslim dress, or can you use a Western dress? I know yoou said David’s Bridal was rude – I used to be a wedding planner – I agree that sometimes sales people can be, but maybe you got some sales people on a bad day. David’s dress sales are really cheap, especially if you can fit into something off the rack.

To rent a dress, just call tuexedo rental places and ask them for a dress rental referral, you’ll be surprised at how many places rent dresses, or have dress returns that they can’t sell, but will rent to try and get some of their store’s money back.

I do hope you can find a nice dress that you can keep – Nordstroms and Macy’s sometimes have fancy dinner dresses that can serve as wedding dresses too.

      Congrats again :)

One of my close friends eloped 25 years ago and desperately seeks to have a wedding portrait. Obviously, purchasing a wedding dress is not an option. She just wants a portrait of her and her husband in wedding attire. Where can this be done?

    • ANSWER:
basically you can hire any photographer to take pictures of anything. if you’re paying, they work for you. your friend could rent a gown and her husband could rent a tux, and they could go to any photographer’s studio for a sitting. tell them to ask people they know who got married recently who their photog was and check their rates and their websites online for samples of their work. or if they want outdoor pictures, they could pay the photographer to meet them in a park somewhere for an hour or 2.

    • ANSWER:
It is much nicer to buy one because it will not have been worn before. It also becomes an heirloom that you can pass down to your daughter/granddaughter. Save up or ask your parents to chip in to pay for it. Many bridal stores do layby. Have fun choosing your dream dress :)

Honestly, you can probably find one pretty cheap to buy on Ebay. They’ve got EVERYTHING for every price range. Check there before you resort to renting. After all, it would be a nice thing to keep if you can. Or, maybe you could try and make one? Good luck!

Right, I haven’t heard of any place to rent gowns (although I don’t know why not — if guys can rent tuxes!!)…but there are plenty of places to get them for less. 37. QUESTION:
Where in IL can i rent a wedding dress?
Im looking for a wedding dress, but I would like to rent. If you know of any stores that have nice priced dresses that would help too.

    • ANSWER:
Since some dress rental places don’t allow you to alter the dress perhaps you can “rent” the dress from yourself. It will look much nicer and you don’t have to worry about late fees or fines if you get a small stain.

Find an affordable dress that you like and after the wedding put it on theknot.com and Ebay and sell the dress. 400 dress sold for 200 bucks….”rented” for 0.

I’ve heard from several brides that are satisfied with dresses they bought of Ebay from sellers who do designer knock-offs. simply go to the dress shop and try on diff. styles to see which suits you best, then have them professionaly measure you (its nearly impossible to get accurate measurements on yourself by yourself) and use that information online. For instance you would know you wanted an empire waist with a sweetheart neckling and a semi-cathederal length train. Make sure they have at least 100 feedbacks with an overall rating of 99% satisfaction and you’ll be fine.

  38. QUESTION:
Would women rent a wedding dress online?
If so, what would be of the greatest concern in renting…price, fit, damage liability. If you would rent a gown, what would be a price range that you feel is affordable?

    • ANSWER:
I would never rent a dress, online or otherwise. You can’t get alterations done because the fabrics used are delicate so that it can’t stand up to repeated alterations before it starts to look really bad. Also, in most cases, you are very limited to the styles available. If you don’t like what they offer, you’d be unhappy and it will show in your pictures. With online service, what you would pay for shipping each time would be equal to the remainder of the cost of a new dress. It doesn’t seem worth it to me.

  39. QUESTION:
How much does it cost to rent a wedding dress?

    • ANSWER:
they can actually be pretty pricey. Usually between 200-700 depending on the designer. That’s just for a weekend. You can buy a nice and simple dress at David’s Bridal for 99 dollars, and if you don’t feel like keeping it afterward, you can sell it to a consignment shop. Keep in mind, when you rent, you still have alterations to consider the same as if you were buying the dress.

  40. QUESTION:

Do not rent. Because you want to remember this moment, don’t you? And who wants to remember an old, rented wedding dress on their beautiful ceremony? You should buy instead; for your sake, and the sake of future memories.

There are nice wedding dress stores where you can buy a lot of nice dresses that scream out “elegance” at a nice price as well! Here are a few stores where you can go and choose.

  42. QUESTION:

    • ANSWER:
dont know about renting one but i bought a alfred angelo look alike for 140 bucks at www.peridress.com. they are a chinese wedding dress maker. it took about a month or so to get my dress. im 5’2″ and weigh 156, just had a baby and ordered a size 14. you should measure for the largest part of your body because you can always take a dress in but its hard to let one out. hope you have good luck finding a dress!!

  43. QUESTION:
Any one know of a good place to rent a wedding dress from in Texas?
Im getting married next Spring & want to know some good stores or web sites to find me the perfect dress.

    • ANSWER:
I am not sure what part of Texas you are in, but you can try re-sale bridal shops. I haven’t been able to find a rental place in my search of a dress and in the end got credit with Alfred Angelo and was able to buy the dress I wanted (went the Bridal Show here in Dallas).

Sometimes your local Thrift stores will get some “up to date” gowns they will usually run around 0 depending on the designer. I saw 2 gowns by Jessica McClintock (sp?), at the local Goodwill, that were not old fashioned looking they were actually in style…they were selling them for about 0. Also try eBay…but i would suggest goin to a tailor or someplace to get your measurements and then start looking…you cant go by the size…better to go by measurements.

You have plenty of time to find a dress….they say to buy your dress as soon as possible…but i would wait b/c a) your taste in gowns may change, b)your weight changes c)if you buy your time right you can save more $$ to buy a dress you really want…i say wait till about 4 months before the wedding to buy the dress.

      sorry for the rambling…lol

  44. QUESTION:
Are there really places to rent wedding dresses?
I have heard of this, but can’t seem to find anywhere yet.I don’t have much money for a dress and my wedding is May 18th.So close!I could spend maybe 0.Advice?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, there are places, but I don’t know of any offhand. If you’re thinking of spending 0 on a rental, you might as well look and see if you can buy one at David’s Bridal or House of Brides for that amount instead. Owning a dress would mean you could have it altered to fit you perfectly and if you end up really loving it, you can either have it made into a cocktail dress later on in life, or save it and preserve it for your daughter’s wedding someday, or save it and cut it into christening gowns for your children if and when you have them baptized. Just some ideas.

  45. QUESTION:
Can you rent a wedding dress? (read details below)?
I really don’t want to have to buy one I mean I’m only gonna wear it once and for one day…Can you rent a wedding dress?? Help please! Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
There are places that rent gowns, but since bridal gowns require so much in the way of alterations, it’s really not recommended.

If you’re worried about cost, I would visit David’s Bridal or a similar store – they have very nice dresses at great prices.

If you’re not a sentimental person and want to get rid of it, you could always donate it (to a program that does prom/party dresses, etc.)
OR you could do a “Trash The Dress” photo shoot, and have fun with it!

If you still feel that you want to rent your gown, you can search for places – I’d suggest some, but don’t know where you’re located :)

      Hope this helps!

  46. QUESTION:
Wedding dress – rent or buy?
I was wondering about whether I should buy my wedding dress or rent one.
I was thinking that renting would be cheaper and I could wear a dress more beautiful than I can afford to buy.
But What happens if I pick out my dream dress and someone wears it the weekend before my wedding and ruins it.

If I buy it I could keep it for ever but it would cost more.

How much does it cost to rent anyway??

Can you offer any suggetions or advice?

  48. QUESTION:
why is it tradition for the bride to keep her wedding gown after the wedding? why not rent a dress?
My boyfriend and I were discussing this the other day. I told him I didn’t think it was important to keep my dress after the wedding because it’s just a lot of money put away in the closet. All I need are pictures and him, and that’s it. He says it’s tradition for the woman to keep her dress as a reminder — and he was mad that I said I’d rather rent a dress instead. He doesn’t know why I’m not taking it seriously. Do most women these days still buy their wedding gowns? Do they sell them? Or do most women just RENT dresses? What’s your opinion on keeping or not keeping a wedding dress after your wedding? This would be our first wedding together, and only. Would it be wrong to rent?

    • ANSWER:
I completely agree with you. I think it’s silly to spend that much on a dress that you’re never going to wear again, and will just take up space in the closet. The wedding isn’t what’s important, the marriage is. And you have your husband to be your ‘keepsake’ for that.

I am buying a pretty dress that I can wear again.

  50. QUESTION:
would you rent a wedding dress or buy it?
survey-thinking of a small bussiness idea since so many people are selling their used wedding dress

    • ANSWER:
I would buy. During my research, I found that for me, buying one was only more then renting. It’s white, and if you’re going to be around food, it’s a big risk to take. Some places will charge a cleaning fee, and if they can’t get the stain(s) out, guess what? You just bought yourself an after-wedding dress!

Too risky to do, for me personally. I’m a klutz and a spiller and wouldn’t last 10 minutes in that rented dress if my life depended on it.
