  4. QUESTION:
Where can I find retro or vintage peep toe shoes for my wedding?
Hi, I am having a 1940′s inspired retro wedding next year. My dress is actually from the 1940′s and I plan to wear a bird cage veil. Now I am in search of shoes to go with.

The problem is I have a foot/ankle problem and cannot wear shoes with a heel greater than 1″. It would also be great if the shoe had an ankle strap. It has been difficult to find white retro shoes without a heel.

I live in Portland, Oregon. Any website suggestions or local Portland places would be awesome. Thanks ahead of time!
I loved Mod Cloth, thank you for that suggestion. They actually had a great show but it only came in yellow…

You really can’t go wrong with eBay. Type in exactly what you’re looking for. The thing is anyone who has something like that is going to put them on eBay because that’s where people go to buy things like that. You can even set up an “alert” in ebay where they will email you daily with what you’re looking for.

Dress is from the 60s and is short, black, with an asymmetrical cutout at the neck and sheer balloon sleeves that go to the forearm. Searched for a pic for an hour, but was’t able to locate something similar.

  9. QUESTION:
Will gold vintage jewelry match my bridesmaid’s ivory shoes?
My wedding is in March, the bridesmaids dresses are tea length and sage green. I was planning on having them wear ivory peep-toe heels of their choice (they can’t agree on an exact shoe). What color jewelry is acceptable for them to wear? I actually already bought them each a different gold vintage necklace to wear for their gifts.

Does gold jewelry clash with ivory shoes? My jewelry will be a pearl set.

    • ANSWER:
Since jewelry is usually worn on the neck or ears, vintage gold jewelry would be suitable no matter what the shoes look like. It might be a good idea for the shoes to be unobtrusive, so the jewelry will be notices, not the shoes.

    Help with finding wedding shoes?
my dress has a very vintage/ shabby chic look I know what kind of shoe I want but finding it might be hard. Im half tempted to make them myself but I thought I’d ask first :) Im looking for a wedge type shoe with satin ribbons that tie around your ankle..sorta like a ballet shoe but with a wedge type heel. 15. QUESTION:
What type of shoes to wear with my wedding gown?
My wedding dress is a dark blue and tea length. It has black crinoline sticking out from underneath and has a vintage look.

For shoes, I’m thinking either a great wedge or flats. I just can’t decide on the color?

I’m thinking either a leopard print or red. First, would it be weird to wear a flat…i like the idea of being comfy and my fiance is only about 4 inches taller than me anyway.

Or should I do a wedge heel? Red or leopard print?
    Obviously, we’re not conventional ;0)
it’s not velvet or anything like that. i think that even though it doesn’t exactly match, that red or the colors in a leopard print would set off the blue.

i do not want to do black shoes.

  16. QUESTION:
I’m looking for a particular pair of shoes shown in the movie “In Her Shoes”.?
Does anyone know of a website that shoes actual photos of the SHOES shown in the movie “In Her Shoes” with Cameron Diaz and Toni Collette? I’m looking specifically for a picture of the wedding shoes Rose gave to her granddaughter (Toni Collette) for her wedding. They were a vintage looking pair with little blue shoes all on the inside lining.

  17. QUESTION:
Different colored shoes with a shorter wedding dress?
I have a white pencil wedding dress that hits a little above the knee (think 60s vintage) and would much rather wear a shoe that isn’t white, but I’m not sure if that’d be ok. I know different colored shoes are ok with regular gowns since hardly anyone sees them anyway, but everyone will definitely be seeing my shoes. So, would a different color shoe be alright, or should i just stick with white? I was leaning towards pink or grey (my colors are light pink, dove grey and spring green), so nothing to drastic. I did see a pair of red slingbacks that I liked a lot, but I thought that may be pushing it a bit. :)

    • ANSWER:
So long as you keep it tasteful, I can’t think of a good reason why you shouldn’t wear a colored shoe. My ‘something blue’ was a blue pair of satin slingbacks. While they weren’t visible under my full length dress, I did take every opportunity I could find to show those puppies off!

  22. QUESTION:
I think the seamstress ruined my wedding dress?
I brought in my vintage wedding dress to be altered. It was my mothers wedding dress
The alteration was supposed to be, shorten the length of the dress and the sleeves.
Today I went in for my second fitting and the dress is now much too short and lop sided.
My shoe’s can plainly be seen even though I asked for the dress to be floor length.
She started pinning the longer side in front of me in order to make that side shorter when i explained I need it to be longer so the shoes are not viable.
Now she’s planning to add lace to the bottom to hide the flaw.
I cant afford to purchase a second wedding dress.
If I sue her how do I determine the value of the dress.
Has anyone here had an simular experiance and how was it resolved?

    The wedding in in October.
I attempted to talk to her yesterday.
She is now claiming that I originally wanted the dress 3 inches above the floor and she cant fix that.
    Screw that !
She can keep the dress and sell it to some chubby midget someday.
I distinctly remember asking to make the dress floor length before the first fitting.
Anyway I calmly walked out, went home and won another dress on Ebay for 30.00.
Its a retired salesmen sample dress made by Casablanca.
It needs a new zipper but has never been actually worn in a wedding.
I got lucky on this one. I’ll be going to a better seamstress next time who specializes in wedding dresses for the second dress.
If your reading this because you are about to become a bride yourself.
Please learn from my mistake. Don’t let this happen to you too.
Go to the very best seamstress you can find.

    • ANSWER:
She sounds like crap to me. Find another seamstress and see if the damage can be fixed before you assume you should sue her.

  24. QUESTION:
What kind of bridesmaid dress would go with my wedding dress?
I just purchased my wedding dress, Maggie Sottero’s Gatsby in Champagne with gold and pewter accents, but I am having trouble finding the right bridesmaid dress. My colors are black, red, and champagne and my bridesmaids dresses are going to be black. The theme of the wedding is more Modern with a touch of vintage (like my wedding dress would be an example of the touch of vintage). I wanted to find bridesmaid dresses that would look great with some 1920′s inspired jewelry, like long pearl necklaces. Also, I want the maids to wear red shoes, because I intend to wear red shoes and I thought it would make a neat picture to have all of us wearing red shoes. Oh and the wedding is the first weekend of June 2011. Any suggestions would help! Thanks!
Also, only one of the bridesmaids is thin. The other 3 are curvy, and two potentially could be pregnant at the time of the wedding.

Do you think it would be too wedding dress-y for prom?

    • ANSWER:
Nope, it’s not. I’ve seen plenty of females with similar dresses on at prom. The whole point of prom is to dress as pretty as you can and that dress is def. going to do that. The shoes are cute too, the headband goes great with both. The outfit has a Greek Goddess feel to it.

Makeup; foundation, mascara, eye liner, dark pink (Plumb) or cream & black eye shadow, blusher.
Put on your foundation. Then your eye shadow, put the pink or cream colour up to the top of your eye lid then use your black putting that about 1/4 of the way up the pink or cream went. Then your eye liner put on the inside of your base of your eye (bottom) on the corners of your eyes have a little triangle, this makes your eyes stand out. Then onto your mascara put a LOT on the top set none or not alot on the bottom set. Finish of with some blusher. :)

Looking for a pair of pink shoes with flowers. Can you help?
    Hi,
I am looking of a specific pair of pink shoes. Here is a link of what they look like :

    http://www.unique-vintage.com/stop-staring-style-aqua-watercolor-floral-print-wiggle-dress-p-7605.html

I am sorry it is quite small to look at, hopefully someone will recognize them. I saw them before for sale but cannot remember the brand.
I believe they are suede, maybe fake suede, peep toe pumps, and have rose-looking flowers adorning the front. In a raspberry pink colour.
I think there is also a black version of the shoe and i think this is it:

I have looked through endless.com and zappos on the pink shoe section and nada :/

  37. QUESTION:
Dress, Hair and Shoes! Oh My!?
I’m clueless about all of this wedding planning jazz, so you ladies need to help me. The wedding date is 11/01/09.

I’m going to have my dress custom made here’s of picture of the style I want (it’s the red one on the left, but i’ll have it made in antique white)

    http://www.gownella.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/50sgowns1.jpg

I want to have the beads from my great grandmothers wedding dress embroidered at the bottom. How much time in advance should I start working with a seamstress?

I’ve never had my hair styled before, so do I go into any salon and show them a picture of what I want that day, or do I go in advance and talk with someone about it? is there a consulation fee involved? I want the dita von teese vintage finger waves, and I’m just wondering if thats something every hair dresser should know how to do?

and lastly I have no friggin idea what kind of shoes to wear. I can’t deal with really high heels, but any suggestions are welcome!

    • ANSWER:
First of all, that dress is completely adorable.

      1. For the custom embroidery on your dress, start as soon as possible. I cannot emphasize that enough. Even basic wedding gowns take months to make and get fitted. Give yourself as much time as possible so you can be sure it’s ready in time for the wedding.

      2. Call a few local hair places in the area where you’re getting married. Let them know that you need an appointment for your wedding day. Most salons have a bridal package that includes the wedding day appointment AND a trial run a few weeks before. Choose the salon that has the most convenient time for you or the best price. Describe the style on the phone so that they can schedule the right stylist to help you. Then take in the photo the day of your trial run.

      3. If you don’t want to wear heels, wear a simple antique white or neutral metallic flat or slipper. Many brides wear these because they are so much more comfortable. Something like this: http://stores.channeladvisor.com/makemechic/items/item.aspx?itemid=857403&utm_source=froogle_shopping&utm_medium=shopping&utm_campaign=all&utm_term=all

      Good luck!

  38. QUESTION:
Where can I find a pin up dress/shoes for a good price? What type of dress compliments my body type?
I have a wedding to attend in may and decided to go all out on the authentic pin up look!

I’m really excited and need to find a dress and shoes for a good price. I want to go with black pumps.

I’m a size 14-16 my waist is small but I’m top heavy and don’t want my chest to be hanging out of my dress.

I want to go with the classy vintage pin up look so what type of dress would compliment me the best and go with a curvey shape?

Also, are there any other good sites you recommend to find out more authentic ways like hair/makeup?

I plan on doing finger waves with a purple flower in my hair and basic pin up all makeup the whole deal, matte red lipstick, winged eyeliner all that fun stuff.

Thanks so much!! Input would be great anything else that would add to the look feel free to tell me :)

Well i dont know if you live in america or in europe or anywhere else. But if you live in Europe then a realy good store for the “pin up look” is “Tally Weijl”.One of the collections they have is based on “pin up girls” and the 50`s and everything and they also have accessories to go with the look and evrything.

      Tally Weijl Pin-up Style:

  39. QUESTION:
I’ve officially gone wedding decor crazy…and need help. Please!?
I started with a love for peacock feathers and eclectic mixes. I’ve had to change my venue from the beach to an indoor reception in a room that is the exact replica of The Crystal Room at Tavern on the Green in NYC.

My bridesmaids dresses are a royal lapis purple. The room has numerous chandeliers and gold chivari chairs. I’m in love with the mid-thirties fashion style. And, I’m wearing green suede shoes. My dress is vintage embellishment inspired.

So – my dilemma: 30s/40′s feel, peacock feathers, purple, gold, crystals, green, vintage…I don’t want something matchy matchy…I love eclectic looks…but I’m scared it won’t look pulled together! Help…please!

    • ANSWER:
From the sounds of it…you sound like you have pulled a lot together already. I am very excited about what you have thought about already! Whatever you do, I know things will look wonderful!
Here are some of my ideas….
I think the bouquets would look fantastic with the violet tulips, peacock feathers, and ivory calla lilies — however you could add either purple or ivory orchids if you think it needs a 2rd flower type. To bring in the gold, you can always wrap a gold ribbon around the bouquet stems and/or accent the bouquet flowers with sparkle gold ting!
For the ceremony, I would make lapis purple pew bows with ivory calla lilies and peacock feathers on every other pew. By puttng them on every other pew, you can save yourself some money.
I would have my BM’s carry bouquets with only white Heather flowers and lavender sprigs. I did this for a wedding once and it looked so amazing. I would also have you carry a pure poeacock cascading bouquet with a few lavender sprigs sporadically placed. How sexy!!!
I would have the grooms men wear all black tie and vest or the same lapis purple as the BM’s. I would have the boutennieres be ivory calla lilies with lavender sprigs and a gold bow. I would have the flower girl be a mini bride because eventhough that is a very modern idea, it is so adorable. I would have the flower girl carry an ivory basket with lapis purple tulip petals. I think roses are silly and tulips are much more 40s anyhow.
I would have your mothers wear lavender or the tan color of the peacock feathers and their corsages can be ivory lilies.
I would have 3different centerpieces. You stated that you do not want matchy matchy, so that would allow for distinct and dramatic approach. I would have a third of your tables with high centerpieces (over 24inch high vases). I would have a third of your tables be a medium 11″ high vase filled with the smaller arrangement of the flowers. I would also have really small vases on the last third of the vases. The 24″ high vases can be filled with lavender, lapis purple tulips, ivory calla lilies, white Heather flowers, and Peacock feathers.
I would have the 11″ vases filled with ivory calla lilies, lavender, and peacock feathers. I would have the small vases (maybe under 5″) be filled with only lavender and Heather flowers.
I would tie this look all together by using ivory table cloths, ivory linens, clear cups, and gold plated silverware. I would use a lapis purple with lavender edging runner on al of the tables or large square placed in the center of the table that takes up all of the room of the table except for where the plates will go. I would also put tea candles all over each of the tables to give them a prettier ambience. You know, many people would say that a vintage idea would be to have the center pieces sit on mirrors but I would definitely put use the fabric idea because it would add more of your colors.
You can order all of your extras (such as signing book, garter, pen, goblets, and all) out of peacock feathers. How cool would it be to have your guests sign with a peacock feather instead of an actual pen???
I would serve only purple drinks. Grape Kool-Aid for the kiddos. Purple Martinis for the adults. And for the champagne toast have lavender sprigs put inside of the cup. Trust me the guests wont eat the lavender. LOL!
Give your guest grape jelly wrapped in an ivory bow and small peacock embellishment. How adorable! This is a nice give away and rather inexpensive.
I would stick to a traditional 3-tier wedding cake since you want to stick to the 30s/40s feel. You can spruce it up a bit by filling the open spaces with lapis purple tulips, white Heather flowers, and lavender sprigs. I would also do a great deal with the peacock motif instead of using actual peacock feathers, which will be cheaper for you and you H2B as well. Such as a peacock motif on your dessert napkins, and invitations.
I think you are on the right track already.
It’s just difficult at times to get all of your ideas down. But until you do, don’t buy anything else…You will just end up purchasing a lot of things that you don’t necessarily need.

  42. QUESTION:
I’m going to a wedding in Chicago–need help with dress.?
I’m going to an August wedding in Chicago. The ceremony is in the day, and the reception is in the evening. It is formal dress.

    I’m 17, and I’m petite: 5’2″, 111 lbs.

I want to spend at most .00.

First of all, what would be considered appropriate? Also, if you find some dresses online, that would be lovely! Send me the link. I want a dress that I can wear both to the ceremony and to the reception–maybe with a shoe change between or change of accessories. I love vintage inspired clothing but any style is fine.

Here are some I found online so far . . . let me know what you think:

    Thanks much! :)
OK–I think I’m going to splurge. I found this dress online:

    http://www.shabbyapple.com/p-556-bethesda-fountain.aspx

What do you think? I’m like 95% sure I am going to get this (plus my mom said she would go halfsies w/ me).

    • ANSWER:
You sound exactly the same size as me! So here’s what I think,

-The first one is going to make you look smaller/shorter than you already are, just because they way the waist is designed. Here is another one from Urban Outfitters, it’s the same price, but I think this one is just AH-dorable! You would get many comments on this dress!

      http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?itemdescription=true&itemCount=80&startValue=1&selectedProductColor=&sortby=&id=18741090&parentid=W_APP_DRESSES&sortProperties=+subCategoryPosition,+product.marketingPriority&navCount=154&navAction=push&color=&pushId=W_APP_DRESSES&popId=WOMENS&prepushId=&selectedProductSize=

-I like the second one, i think it’s a good choice. Although I’m a bit more into color, or just something else, this would be a great dress if you want to go plain or modern. If you want to spice it up just a tad here is another dress that is very close to the one you’ve chosen, but more fun and youthful.

      http://www.freepeople.com/sale-sale-dresses/pretty-young-thing-dress/

-I do not like the last one at all, I think this dress is going to drowned you.
Maybe try this one? I would also pair this dress with a belt.

      http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?itemdescription=true&itemCount=80&startValue=81&selectedProductColor=&sortby=&id=18237388&parentid=W_APP_DRESSES&sortProperties=+subCategoryPosition,+product.marketingPriority&navCount=238&navAction=push&color=&pushId=W_APP_DRESSES&popId=WOMENS&prepushId=&selectedProductSize=

Here are a couple more that I think you might like:

This one has a bit of that vintage feel that you said you liked, plus it has a sexy open back.

      http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?itemdescription=true&itemCount=80&startValue=1&selectedProductColor=&sortby=&id=18138792&parentid=W_APP_DRESSES&sortProperties=+subCategoryPosition,price&navCount=49&navAction=push&color=&pushId=W_APP_DRESSES&popId=WOMENS&prepushId=&selectedProductSize=

I really like this one, it’s plain and simply, but has those sexy ruffles in the front.

      http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?itemdescription=true&itemCount=80&startValue=1&selectedProductColor=&sortby=&id=19008176&parentid=W_APP_DRESSES&sortProperties=+subCategoryPosition,price&navCount=49&navAction=push&color=&pushId=W_APP_DRESSES&popId=WOMENS&prepushId=&selectedProductSize=

I hope this helps! I wasn’t quite sure if you liked prints or florals or anything specific.
Best of luck finding a dress! And I would love to know which dress you end up picking!
      Hayle

  44. QUESTION:
Wedding flats to go with tea-length dress?
    Hey friends,

I designed my own vintage looking dress, just a bit shorter than tea-length, strapless with a polka dot bolero, all in off white and my amazing seamstress made it adorable.

However, my awesome 4 ” purple heels will work great for the wedding itself but my reception is in a grassy lane and I’d sink in.

I need cute flat or near flat shoe options to wear outdoors that would still lend to the updated vintage vibe and they can be off white, dark purple, or royal blue.

    Help!

    • ANSWER:
Check www.myglassslipper.com. They have a ton of cute styles in colors and in dyables, which you could make whatever color you want. You can search by heel height so you can get flats easily.

  45. QUESTION:
What colour tights and shoes with this brown dress?
My dress is empire line, comes just below my knees. short sleeves, knitted brown to the empire line, then gold silk underskirt with brown organza over. there are lines of delicate gold and purple ribbon running horizontally across the skirt. very vintage looking (maybe it is). I’m wearing it to an october wedding- so i need tights, and i’d like some mid-height, closed toe heels- any recommendations re: colours?!
    Thanks everybody!
Oh yeah, the brown is a sort of rich, dark, milk chocolate!

    • ANSWER:
Definately brown shoes, black would look tacky. I would go with a good nude pair of tights unless you’re feeling adventurous you could go to Boston Store or Macy’s and get a pair of good HUE brand tights in a gold to match the trim. Personally that’s the route I would go. They might have a different color to match as well…

  46. QUESTION:
    October acessories for wedding?
    My dress is ivory :http://www.unique-vintage.com/images/unique-vintage/7533larger.jpg

I thought about having copper-colored accessories, as it is October/fall, and I am a redhead. I thought I could co-ordinate with my hair…lol.

Anyway, My shoes are ivory, too, but I thought about a copper-colored wrap, purse, and hair doo dads. What do you think? Or should I just go with ivory (gardenia in hair) as planned?

    Here’s the copper wrap… http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BRONZE-CHIFFON-FINEST-CARESSE-WRAP-BRIDE/EVE_W0QQitemZ390049756611QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20090506?IMSfp=TL090506123001r28316#ht_1173wt_1165

(this is just an example, and I haven’t found one in particular yet. Any sugesstions, please link!!)
    and the ivory one…

I think I like this copper one better…
Oops. Apparently, DB won’t keep the color in the link. The color is ‘cognac’ or ‘copper’ – same thing, two names.

    • ANSWER:
your dress is GORGEOUS…by the way…but i think you should choose what you like best…i like the copper wrap…but there is a possibility that with that being colorful that may draw peoples attention rather than the actual dress…with that in mind i would go with the first copper wrap since it seems a little more see through not so bold…or you could easily go with the ivory wrap and copper accessories tho…good luck and congrats

    • ANSWER:
well Modcloth is the very best place to get vintage style pieces, i know they are based in the USA but i have ordered from them and the shipping costs work out really cheap compared to a lot of international companies and you also need to bear in mind that pounds are roughly half of dollars when converted so something that is like would only be £20 so you can get a good bargain, here are some pieces that will work with that dress:

  48. QUESTION:
I would love your opinions on my wedding ideas!?
I’m not sure what season it will be in, but I’m thinking late August possibly early September.

-My flowers will be Hydrangeas. My colors are green and teal with hints of purple. I absolutely love this picture (minus the Tulips):

    lilacs hydrangea and french tulips

-I’m wearing a birdcage veil and would like to know what dress would be best with it? Here’s what they look like (this isn’t the exact one I’m wearing):

-I’m leaning toward a vintage French country style. Something like this:

-I’m having the same-style dress for the Bridesmaids (4) so two will have teal colored dresses and two will have clover colored dresses.

Okay, that’s as far as I’ve got :) Opinions, please?

    • ANSWER:
Love your ideas – very tasteful, very classy.

For a gown, I would look for something that has a vintage feel with a fantastic back, since you won’t have a veil blocking it – something like this, maybe?
