Wedding Bouquet

On you wedding day you will want everything to be perfect, which means planning everything carefully. As the bride you will be the centre of attention so careful thinking regarding your outfit is needed.

The flowers that you will be carrying in your bouquet for your wedding need to be beautiful because the bouquet will not only be the central feature of your wedding outfit, but it will also carry a very personal and special message with it. Many people often think that the flowers chosen by the bride are selected just for the color or because they are the bride’s favorites. They fail to realize that there is a lot more to it than that. Flowers are not only symbolic but they also have a message attached to them and your choice of flower for your wedding can convey a lot. There are basically three types of wedding bouquets:

•Teardrop bouquet: has a shape like bunch of grapes
•Posy bouquet: simple and circular in shape
•Sheath bouquet: long shape of a flower, which is draped across the arm

A wedding bouquet that is made out of roses is one of the most popular choices for brides across the world. Red roses symbolize passion and love, two important factors for any marriage. A rose wedding bouquet looks not only stunning, but it is versatile as well. It has been an old custom for a man to send roses as a gift to his woman and it is a well-known fact that roses carry an unwritten message of love with them. Roses come in different colors and every color has a different meaning. Some rose meanings are:

•Black roses mean ‘you are my obsession’.
•Champagne colored roses mean ‘you are tender and loving’.
•A pink rose symbolizes brilliant complexion, glow of the bride’s smile and perfect happiness.
•A red rose stands for passionate love.
•A rose with a single stem shows simplicity.
•A white rose means spiritual love, purity and innocence.
•A white and red rose means ‘we are inseparable’.

Brides carrying flowers in a wedding is not a new tradition. It has its roots in ancient times. Initially strong smelling spices and herbs were used for keeping away evil spirits during such celebrations. But in the Roman era people started using flowers as it symbolizes fertility. A red rose wedding bouquet will look good placed against dark green leaves. All wedding bouquets can also be made with silk or fresh flowers depending on personal choice. It is not at all difficult to make a rose bouquet. All you need is some red roses, natural or artificial, some rose leaves, wire, clear crystals, crimps, head pins, a red ribbon and a crimping tool. Bouquets made out of red roses can never go out of fashion. They are always in vogue and one of the most preferred choices of brides around the world. The passion conveyed by roses is unequalled by any other flower.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    Wedding bouquet?
I have a June wedding, and I was thinking of doing my bridesmaids bouquet in purple lilacs and sage green roses. For mine, purple lilacs, sage green roses and a couple sunflowers to set it apart from the bridesmaids. Would that be a weird looking bouquet? LoL

    • ANSWER:
That would be very pretty and unique…maybe instead of getting the big sunflowers get mini sunflowers…they look just like the bigger ones but are smaller, and won’t take up so much space! and the sage roses are gorgeous…it wouldn’t matter if you used them or not because they are a lighter green and would still show through the dark green leaves.and a smattering of purple perfects it. I’m a licensed florist and haven’t heard of that combination but thru imagination it sure looks beautiful!

  2. QUESTION:
    Wedding Bouquet?
I recently have caught my friends bouquet at her wedding. Now my question is how do I perserve it? Is there anything that I can do at home? I heard that if you spray it with hairspray it will be okay. Is that true? What else can I do?

    • ANSWER:

  3. QUESTION:
    wedding bouquet …?
I am doing my mom’s bouquet for her wedding next month. I have found a special flower for her bouquet. Chocolate Cosmos …. she wants brown and pink for her bouquet.

So I have the cosmos for the brown and now need a pink flower that would work well and not overpower the cosmos. What is your opinon for a good flower ..
I never thought of that … with the cosmo. I know they are the biggest flower …. Do you think accenting with a darker bigger flower and like a pink cosmo would do better?

    • ANSWER:
There are endless pink flowers. I love calla lillies or a pink hydrangea are long lasting.

I would pick a diff. brown flower besides the chocolate cosmo though. Perhpas a dark brown rose? The only problem with chocolate cosmos is that while they are absolutely AMAZING in person they tend to show up as little block spots in the photos instead of brown beauites that they are.

  4. QUESTION:
    wedding Bouquet?
Im using Red Hydrangeas for my Bouquet, and i was wondering what is a good flower to use for the boutonnieres?
    was thinking beige magnolia.
What do you think .. any pix you have would help
    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
I like your idea, perhaps for the guys add a bit of ivy around it – the green will look great against the beige magnolia.

  5. QUESTION:
How to execute a wedding bouquet made out of movie tickets?
    Hi All!

I have kept almost every ticket from the movies that my fiancee and I have been to from the last 8 years and I want to create my bridal bouquet out of them for our movie theme wedding next summer.

Does anyone have any ideas how I may execute that? Maybe what I can use as a base, and then decoupage the tickets on it?

He proposed at the movies, we are hoping to get married at an old theater and we really want to incorporate the tickets into the wedding.

    Any other suggestions are welcomed!

    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
You could buy some silk flowers. Take all the leaves off of them, use the movie tickets as the leaves around the flowers.

Instead of having an actual bouquet (I went to a wedding where all the girls carried little umbrellas), you could make a fan out of the tickets. Or you could make a director’s clapboard out of the tickets. Not sure how formal or how much of the theme you are incorporating. Instead of the flower girl dropping flowers she could drop the tickets. Instead of pew bows (if your in church) or at the end of an isle of chairs make a nice little arraignment out of the tickets.

      Hope this helps!

wedding bouquet with white roses and primroses?
I ordered my wedding cake and it has white roses with white primroses on the top and the different tiers. I love it! I was wondering if anyone has seen a brides bouquet or centerpieces that have the primrose and roses in it? Simple is better. We will have my bouquet made by a florist but if we can make the centerpieces we might be able to save some money. which is always helpful in wedding planning! Thanks in advance!

    • ANSWER:
I would be worried about using primroses. I can see why you would want to include them as they are lovely, but they wilt easily.

  9. QUESTION:
What does it mean when the wedding bouquet hits you when you did not intend to catch it?
I was at my brothers wedding last night and when the bride went to throw the bouquet i did not go up there to catch it (even though i am unmarried) i bent down in my chair reaching for my purse on the floor and the bride threw the bouquet and it literally hit me in the behind!! I did not pick it up off the floor, i really didn’t want no part of it but the bouquet found me or my backside rather. So funny yes, but what does it mean?

    • ANSWER:
Could be marriage will bite you on the butt or marriage will take you by surprise!!

  10. QUESTION:
What flowers should I have in my summer wedding bouquet?
I really wanted tulips in my wedding bouquet, but the florist has told me the colour I want (burgundy) cannot be guaranteed at the end of May for my wedding. I’m gutted and need to think of something else! I really don’t want roses, I think they’re a bit cliché and looking for something simple and pretty like tulips that’ll be in season at the end of May (that are also not too expensive!) Can you give me any ideas? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
      carnations?

  11. QUESTION:
How many mini calla lilies are needed in a hand tied wedding bouquet?
I am a petite woman so I want to use the mini calla lilies instead of the regular size ones. I am trying to guess how many I need to order to put together a wedding bouquet.

    • ANSWER:
If you are tiny you could carry 3 regular-size Callas or 9 small ones. Callas are only impressive when they have room to spread among greens. Because of their shape, they get squished easily when in a bunch.

  12. QUESTION:
What other flowers would like nice in a wedding bouquet of freesia, violets and sweet pea?
For my wedding I want white freesia, white violet and white sweet pea flowers. I love the way this smell together and I love the natural shape they have when placed together. However I want to add a pop of color to the bouquet. My wedding colors are chocolate brown and sage green. What other types of flowers could I add (other than roses)

    • ANSWER:
Adding in some leafy greens would not only add to your bouquet but would stick with the colors! Why not try some sage? Or even just some mint– that would look very nice, smell nice, and be really cheap! I think bouquets look more put together when green is involved– they also look more natural.

  13. QUESTION:
How long is turnaround from a florist for a wedding bouquet is to long?
Here’s the deal – I went to a florist I found on yelp on October 16 for my wedding on November 14 – I followed up last week they said that they would call me back today – But I got no phone call – I am 15 days away from my wedding and I still have not discussed my bouquet with a florist

How long from when they call you do they return your call to schedule an appointment?

    • ANSWER:
      Get another florist!!!! Quickly!!

  14. QUESTION:
What would be a good choice for a yellow flower in this wedding bouquet?
A friend of mine is getting married in the fall of next year and we can’t figure out a yellow flower that would look good in her bouquet (her wedding will be in fall colors). She knows she wants deep red roses and tiger lilies, but we can’t think of a golden yellow flower to go with it (she thinks sunflowers would be “too much”). Any help the lovely people here at Y!A could give would be great!

  15. QUESTION:
I need some advise/suggestions! How easy would it be to do my own wedding bouquet?
I am on a really tight budget for my wedding. I want a nice bouquet, but have heard how expensive florists usually are and I really can’t afford that. I want real flowers so I was thinking about getting my flowers from a wholesaler and doing the bouquet myself. We are not having a wedding party so all I have to worry about is my bouquet. Does anyone have any experience doing their own bouquet? How hard would it be to do? Any helpful advise/suggestions? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
sweetie they are dead easy to do – michael’s crafts has all the components to make your own bouquet and if you are nervous about it at all they have classes you can go to and learn all the tricks of the trade!
i made a beautiful bride’s bouquet with a dozen roses [artificial] and greenery for less than .00 – you can do it too! if you want to do fresh flowers then you simply purchase a different holder for them. the difference is in the foam – one type for fresh flowers and one type for artificial! you can do this girl! happy wedding!
watch michael’s for sales – and btw their artificial flowrs are very nice!

  16. QUESTION:
How do I preserve my wedding bouquet?
I just got married on Saturday. I have a beautiful flower bouquet and my new husbands flower pin that I would like to have preserved. Can I do this myself? I don’t want them to look dried out like popourri. I want them to look just as beautiful as they do now and did the day of the wedding. Can anyone help me out? Please, if you know how to do this give me step by step directions on what to do. Thanks for the help!

    • ANSWER:
Any of the methods you can do yourself will not have the flowers look they did when they were fresh. Hang them to dry, and you’ll get the ‘potpouri’ look you described. The silica method is only slightly better, They still fade significantly. Putting them in your freezer at home will make them look nice…..as long as they stay in the frezzer! Once you take them out, they will turn into a gushy mess.
You want to have this done professionally. Usually they are freeze dried. Look online and see if there’s anyone near you who can do it. You will probably have to send it out somewhere, and you’ll want to do this RIGHT AWAY. Like tomorrow. In general, you should arrange to have it done ahead of the wedding, so that as soon as you leave the reception, you overnight ship your bouquet to the preservation company. While you’re hunting online, keep them in the fridge, and keep it away from fruits and veggies (they produce a gas that speeds up the aging process). The other option is have the flowers pressed and framed under glass. Obviously, it won’t look the same, but the colors are usually pretty faithful, and then you can hang it on your wall or whatever, without it taking up space and collecting dust. Again, you can find places that do this online. But hurry! If you got married Saturday, that bouquet is gonna start to fade pretty quick! If it’s hand tied (the actual flower stems are exposed) recut the stem ends and put them in water. If it’s in a holder with foam, hold the foam part under the running faucet for a minute to try and re-saturate it. Good luck!!!

  17. QUESTION:
How or where can I preserve my wedding bouquet? I live in Torrance CA.?
A couple days past since my wedding (3 days) and now I really want to preserve my wedding bouquet…I want to find a place close to my home so I can drop it off ASAP. Please recommend some places. Also, is it really worth taking it? Otherwise how can I preserve it on my own, any tips?

    • ANSWER:
Time is of the essence. Check out the first two sites below or if you are a creative and a crafty type you can do it yourself using sand, silica, or a borax kit which you can get at a craft supply like Michaels > http://direct.where2getit.com/cwc/apps/w2gi.php?client=michaels&template=locator&city=torrance&state=CA&postalcode=&country=US

Each flower will have to be dried and reassembled… try reassembling in a different way by using some of the flowers in a heart shape pattern inside a display box frame. Or you may simply try pressing some of the flowers and framing them in a flat frame. You’ll get ideas at the craft shop or at a bookstore or library or online search engines. Good luck and have fun.

  18. QUESTION:
What flower(s) go well with orchids for a wedding bouquet?
I know for sure that I want orchids in my bouquet because I have a good idea for them for the reception & I like orchids; however, I am having a hard time deciding what other flowers to add into my bouquet that will also make for nice centerpieces at the reception. 19. QUESTION:
How difficult would it be to have daffodils in my wedding bouquet?
I’ve starting planning my wedding and most wedding websites deal in tulips, daisies, orchids, and roses… not daffodils. Is it a flower that isn’t commonly used in weddings?

I was also looking into getting Chromacolor Daffodils or White-Hoop Petticoat Daffodils. Are these flowers easy to find?

Is there a particular season I should have my wedding in to get daffodils in the bouquets?

    • ANSWER:
Daffodils are not commonly done in bridal bouquets, even in season. The best time to do it is early spring when daffs are in season. Check with a florist or nursury for the specific varieties you are looking for. Any other time of the year they are not only difficult to find, but pretty expensive! I had a July bride to whom daffodils were very special (they were her deceased grandmother’s favorite) and she really wanted at least one or two in her bouquet. We ended up doing a fresh flower bouquet and adding a couple silk daffodils. No one knew but the bride, and she had a little bit of her grandma with her for her wedding day. Be creative and open-minded and it will turn out perfect!

bouquets – acorns would be a great touch. get some wire thick enought to stay put twist it up a pen and clue the end to the acorn, stretch it out some so it dangles or just straight up wire and or fish line and have it fall beneath the flowers or what ever your using.

get one of those really big big pine cone or have someone make ahuge one and use that as your bouquet. that would be a unique idea no flowers just pine cone.

I highly recommend DIY if you are just having a posy (drop bouquet is a bit harder).
It takes no time and is so easy. I did mine, the bridesmaids, the boutonnieres and corsages.
I also bought all the flowers for the wedding and did them. At wholesale it was about 1/3 of what a florist wanted, and my bouquet was about 1/5.

  31. QUESTION:
How much is an average wedding bouquet of roses cost?
Im thinking about doing my flowers all silk since I heard its cheaper, but is it really that much less. Im only having two bridesmaids and as little flower decor as possible. My main question though really is, whats the ball park amount for the average bouquet?

    • ANSWER:
It truly depends on the florist, the area you are in and the time of year. For instance, I got married on February 16th, which is two days after Valentine’s Day. Since it was so close to Valentine’s Day I paid a lot more for my bouquet of roses since the price of roses nearly triple around that time of year. I believe that I paid around 5.00 for my bouquet…
I think that average price is about 0.00 for the bridal bouquet…at least the area that I’m in (SF Bay Area). You could call around to your local grocery stores like Safeway. My friend got her bouquets done at Safeway – they did a wonderful job and it was fairly cheap.
I personally like the look of the real flowers – but I’ve been in a wedding where they used silk flowers and it looked really nice…and we got to keep the bouquets as a keepsake.
Honestly, the best thing to do is make calls to your local florists (look for wholesale florists in your area) and grocery stores. You never know – you may find that it around the same price to do fresh flowers.
If you are trying to watch your cost you can do what I did for my wedding – I wanted roses for my bouquet, so I spent the extra money; but for my bridesmaids I tried to keep it affordable, so we used gerbera daisies. The bouquets turned out really beautiful and much more affordable then doing roses for everyone.

    • ANSWER:
An anniversary dance is always fun, and often very touching. Here is how it goes:

All the couples get out onto the dance floor and start dancing to a slow song. After a minute or so, the DJ asks anyone who has been together less than 24 hours leave the floor….The bride and groom leave the floor.

The DJ continues….asking couples together less than a year to leave the floor…..then 3 years….5…..10…20….30….and so on, until you are down to the couple who has been together the longest.

The last couple on the dance floor wins a gift…either a gift basket, a certificate…which can be combined with the bouquet and the garter, if you want. The oldest couple does not do anything with the bouquet/garter…just keep it as a sign of their long commitment to each other, from a newly married couple. I’ve seen couples who have been together up to 60 years…very touching.

As a side note, I do not like the DJ to say the couples need to be “married couples”…there are many long standing, committed couples who are not married for one reason or another. I don’t think they should be eliminated from participating with this dance. That is just my opinion. Either way, it is a beautiful, dignified way to give a nod to the “Garter and Bouquet” tradition, while honoring the longstanding relationships in your family and friends.

  34. QUESTION:
What is the history of the wedding bouquet?
I am currently planning my wedding and in the course of looking at pictures for ideas, I start to question why a bride has the flowers to begin with. Why do the bridesmaids and bride carry flowers down the aisle?

    • ANSWER:
At one time baths were not always available. There was a time if people wanted to get cleaned they would swim in a near by lake or pond. So most people had an odor to them most of the time. The flowers were carried by the bride and the bride’s maids to mask the odor of the bride. Of course, times have changed but the tradition of the bouquet is still around.

  35. QUESTION:
What is the best way to preserve my wedding bouquet?
I was married this last weekend. My bouquet consists of hydrangea and roses, what steps do I need to take to dry it while keeping it looking beautiful afterward?

    • ANSWER:
Hang them upside down making sure you wrap them with thin paper so they dont get dusts. When they are dry, buy a special frame that has space inside that resembles an aquarium but not as deep and place your dry bouquet there. Arrange them as if they are in a vase. Actually, here in Australia, there are people that preserve wedding bouquets and frame them. I don’t where you are but its worth asking around.

  43. QUESTION:
How to freeze dry wedding bouquet?
I just got married, and my bouquet was real (fresh). I want to try to perserve the flowers, any ideas on how to freeze dry the flowers?

    • ANSWER:
      The Bouquet

Flowers can be dried, turned into potpourri or individually pressed within the pages of a book. To properly preserve a bouquet, don’t delay, begin the drying process before leaving on your honeymoon.

Turn the bouquet upside down and hang it in a dry, dark place for about two weeks. By that time it should be completely dried out and ready to decorate a wall or shelf.

To make potpourri, remove fresh petals and place in a bowl out of sunlight, for about 2-3 weeks. After the petals are dry, add a drop or two of floral-scented potpourri oil.

Pressed flowers or just the petals can be used to adorn the pages of a wedding album, placed in a picture frame or used on stationery. Cut fresh flowers close to the base and place them inside a folded piece of wax paper. Then, place it all within the pages of a heavy book. Check back in two weeks.

  45. QUESTION:
I need help deciding what flowers to use in my wedding bouquet that don’t cost an arm and a leg?
I am having a May wedding and I love roses, but I have heard that they are expensive. I don’t know much about flower cost. Does anyone have some suggestions on pretty spring flowers that don’t break the bank.

    • ANSWER:
You can just get roses for your bouquet – then you can use a more affordable flower for your centerpieces and bridesmaids bouquet.
Carnations and gerbera daisies are very affordable flowers – and they come in all kinds of colors.
I love the gerbera daisies – that’s what I used in my centerpieces and for my bridesmaids bouquets. Like you, I love roses, so I got my bouquet made out of roses – but it was fairly expensive because I got married right around Valentine’s Day.
If you want to keep the cost down, you can get a bouquet with gerbera daisies and a few roses. Maybe something like this:
