Wedding Color Schemes

When you walk into wedding receptions, you immediately notice the color scheme. You may see it in the 00004000 linens, floral arrangements, decorations, lighting, table gifts and more. The color pattern can offer a sense of excitement, romance or seduction. The colors a person chooses says so much about who they are and what they like. It’s a way to bring your personality into the wedding.

For some, the choice is simple, you choose a color you’ve always loved and work around that. Others want to incorporate a theme or season into their scheme, which limits the color choices, which is sometimes helpful. For example, spring weddings see bright flowers that are starting to bloom, such as yellows, whites and purples. If the wedding reception takes place in the summer, then softer pastels are usually the norm. The cooler months use fiery colors to spice them up, with oranges and reds, pine and other greenery.

Another way to find a color scheme is to look at photos from other weddings or use a color wheel. A color wheel shows complimentary and contrasting colors. Visiting a paint store and pulling swatches of various colors can help. Play around with what works together, or using varying shades of the same color, like crimson and rose or chocolate and ivory. Bold colors could include fuchsia, orange and ivory, or trendy shades of purple, violet and lavender that are popping up this year.

Color schemes can also be based on a theme. Is the wedding a Hollywood themed wedding, or a 70′s style wedding, or a beach wedding? These might help guide the color palette chosen. For Hollywood wedding receptions, think about black, white and red. For a 70′s style wedding, browns, oranges and yellows would work. A beach wedding might pair robin’s egg blue with gold and ivory.

Now that you know what colors you want to use, it’s time to start putting together the rest of the wedding. Invitations can have an image to reflect a theme, or can use your color scheme in the ink, paper color or envelopes. You may even want to use a ribbon to tie around the invitation. Remember, this is the first glimpse your friends and family have as to what’s to come.

From there, the color scheme finds it way into the bride’s bouquet, the bridesmaid dresses, groomsmen’s socks and the groom’s vest and/or tie. One consideration may be choosing a color for the bridesmaid’s dresses that flatters most skin tones. Other colors from the scheme can be pulled into the bridesmaid’s flowers or jewelry. Sometimes choosing black for a bridesmaid dress, depending on the season, can create a dramatic backdrop for the bride.

Bridesmaids might wear a neutral color to let the color scheme stand out with flowers or jewelry, or their dress may be part of the color scheme. Remember to coordinate with your venue, so you colors don’t clash with decor that can’t be changed. You can always add colorful table linens, decorations, party favors and tons of flowers.

You may have just one color you want to focus on, or you may be playing with several colors or shades of color. Remember, wedding receptions are designed to let your personality come through. Have fun with the colors and how much of them you want to incorporate.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Any suggestions on deciding on wedding color schemes?
My fiance and I are having some issues deciding on our wedding color scheme. I like pink and purple but he likes green and blue. Out of these 4 colors any suggestions on color schemes?

    • ANSWER:
purple and green are great together. for almost anytime of year

pink and green for early summer and spring
      purple and blue for winter

pink and blue are for baby showers. lol.

  2. QUESTION:
What are some wedding color schemes that are both beautiful and uncommon/unusual?
I really like the idea of gray and orange; however, the fiance is not too thrilled by it. I really want a color scheme that is different, that is bold and stylish, but not garish or horrid. Any suggestions? Or comments/ideas about the gray-orange combo? Thank you!

    • ANSWER:
My wedding “colors” are black and white polka dots! Instead of choosing a third color…I chose a pattern. Its actually all coming together and looking great! I chose black and white to make it easy to find everything (decoration wise), but the polka dots make it FUN! My bridesmaids have black dresses with white polka dots, and the cake is white with black polka dots! Consider a print instead of a color! The wedding is in 2 weeks Id be more than happy to send you some pics afterward if youd like?!

  3. QUESTION:
Where can I find web sites that describe/show wedding color schemes?
I’m having a wedding October 21, 2006 in a nature preserve with a lovely house (in case it rains), a lake, and lots of beautiful scenery. In PA it will be peak color at that time.

So, I’m struggling with color schemes for that time period… but I don’t know where I can find suggestions. If someone can guide me to a website or something? I’m going to try to coordinate (at least attempt it) from bridesmaid dresses, to centerpieces, to invitations… etc.

    • ANSWER:
you can always do fall colors (lead with red but also oranges, yellows, browns, etc). But with fall in PA, there may already be enough of that. Sounds like you’ll have a lot of natural color as is. You could do very simple colors to compliment the surroundings – solid reds, blacks or browns for BM dresses with one or two tone flowers.
ex. classic red dresses with mango calla lillies as flowers. or black dresses with deep red flowers – depends on how casual or formal your wedding is.
colors i would avoid – pinks, purples, pastels. would clash with fall.
what color do you like? if you can’t decide, ask the coordinator at the location some popular colors or ones they like for the setting…

  4. QUESTION:
What are good summer wedding color schemes? I was thinking brown & ivory, or gold and red, or gold and black?

    • ANSWER:
well I think that brown and Ivory sound vey classy together. Im actually going to get married and my colors are chocolate brown, Ivory and tiffany blue. I cant wait.

  5. QUESTION:
The place where I am getting married has red carpet, What color schemes can I use for my wedding??r=1252407039?
I am getting married next August, and the church where I am getting married had red carpet, what would be some great color schemes for my wedding

    • ANSWER:
My church had a red carpet as well. Don’t worry about it I barely notice that in pictures. I had like a periwinkle color for the girls dresses and shades of purple and yellow for the flowers it looked really good, even with the red carpet.

  6. QUESTION:
    Wedding color schemes?
I’m trying to think of how to color scheme a wedding. The couple wants both of their favorite colors incorporated; the bride’s being purple, and the groom’s being red. They have also said that they want the traditional white as well. Any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
I would go for white and one of the two colors as major hues, with the other as an accent:
      for Example:

White and Lavender throughout with a few tiny accents of red

      Or

White and Red throughout with a few small accents of Lavender

  7. QUESTION:
Opinions wanted on wedding color schemes?
So I have several options I am thinking about:

    1. gray, pale pink, pale yellow

    2. gray, yellow, turquoise

    3. gray, pink, turquoise

    4. turquoise, pink, and yellow

    What do you think?

    • ANSWER:
Grey is actually a “trendy” colour right now, at least in design. Especially decor design. That said, maybe you just really like the colour grey. We each have our own thing. :)

Turquoise is also really hot right now. It’s a colour that I like as well.

In the end, colour is something that most guests pay little attention to or remember.

Just chose a colour theme that you like and one that is easy to work with. Remember that some colours are harder to match than others.

I personally like 3 and 4, just due to the visual effect. I also am a child of the 80s and am LOVING the 80s comeback, so having turquoise in a wedding would be so, so, cool. I’m more of the fun non-traditional type. :)

In the end, up to you.

Why not get some colour swatches and match them up? You should be able to see what looks best to you. Also consider other colours as well. For example, using black and white with turquoise as an accent colour.

      Good luck!

  9. QUESTION:
Ideas for a new years eve wedding and possible color schemes?
My fiance and I are planning on having a new years eve wedding, and have the reception go into the new year complete with fireworks and a party! What would be some good ideas for our wedding?

    • ANSWER:
That sounds like a really fun idea. Make it elegant by using colours like black, silver and white. Provide party favors to your guests to help you ring in the new year. I would pretty much think of new years parties you have been to and incorporate those ideas and then add a wedding touch to them.

  10. QUESTION:
Wedding color schemes…which do you like better?
So I’m really torn between these two color schemes for my bridesmaid dresses. I have my organic side, and my bold side and I can’t decide! Which do you like better?

Theres: a deep apple red with chocolate brown sashes/details-I would have more reds/fall colors
    OR
A light celadon green with soft latte brown sashes-I would have more greens and whites

    Which sounds prettier to you?

Keep in mind that it’s going to be an outdoor fall wedding and the color schemes of the bridesmaid dresses will translate throughout the whole wedding.
Right now we’re thinking mid October-around the 17th

    • ANSWER:
Can I switch it up a bit? Deep Apple Red with the Latte trim would be so much better. Then you can add in some of the fall golds, reds, oranges, etc. and it would be much more striking. Just my opinion…..

  11. QUESTION:
Completely rethinking my wedding color schemes??? Help!!?
Ok my current color scheme is navy blue, aqua blue and white. My bridesmaid’s dresses will be navy blue and some of them will have an aqua blue sash or bow around the waist. All of my centerpieces will be primarily white with a little bit of blue incorporated. And all my invitations and programs will be navy blue.

But now I am starting to rethink everything!! I chose blue because it’s my favorite color and I am just naturally very drawn to any shade of blue. But I feel like this color scheme is kind of wintry and my wedding will be in the summer! I am thinking about doing jewel tones… something bright and sunny and bold for the flowers!! But something a little more subdued for the bridesmaid’s dresses… a more pale color, nothing dark!

What do you think? What are some suggestions you have about color schemes?? I don’t want color to be EVERYWHERE, but I want something more summery. What should I do???

    • ANSWER:
Keep the color scheme, but pop it with one warm, bright color. For example, do the bridesmaid flowers in orange. Other options would be pink or yellow.

      orange:

      pink:

      yellow:

      http://www.theweddingplanningaudiocast.com/Navy-yellow-SMP375x500.jpg

If you want to keep the colors cool and really different, then go with light green.

      http://creditcrunchbride.files.wordpress.com/2009/01/green-bridal-bouquet-pictures-6.jpg

Either way, blue flowers are hard to find and may not show on a navy blue background. So picking one more color will be helpful, and keep it summery at the same time.

  12. QUESTION:
What colors will go with orange to make a nice wedding color scheme?
My friend is getting married (not soon, in a year!).
Right now shes just engaged but she is starting to think about what she’d like for her wedding. She loves tiger lillies, and plans to spend alot of the budget having those as the flowers. With that in mind I suggested orange bridesmaids dresses, which was another idea she loved.
She is looking for a simple color scheme with minimal colors. So far she is thinking Orange, White, and Yellow. I wonder what you can come up with?

    • ANSWER:
Yeah, the bride in white among the orange of the bridesmaids for the creamsicle wedding. That’s a good one, I’m still laughing about it.

  13. QUESTION:
Spring Wedding Color Schemes for Orange?
Hi! I plan on having a wedding in May and really love orange lilies. So, I’m thinking of having the orange as the primary color. Are there any other colors that would go well with orange for a spring wedding? I’m trying to figure out what would be a good bridesmaid dress color other than orange…
One of my bridesmaids has bright red hair so an orange dress wouldn’t complement her well :)

    • ANSWER:
I would choose sage. That would be a dramatic presentation along the color wheel. (the red head maid would also look beautiful in lime, olive, or sage. I truly believe olive would look the best on the red head….)

finally someone having a wedding who isn’t boring! go with the second one it would definitely look really cool. if you like bright colors then the other ones are just too soft but if you do like softer color go with the first one (i would have said 4 but that’s just too much feminine colored things).

  19. QUESTION:
What do you think of my wedding color scheme of choice?
I really love the color red, but I know it can be somewhat risky. So i’m thinking to do brown red and cream. I originally wanted to do black red and white, but the colors of the hall would not match with black. So i figured why not brown table covers, cream chair covers with a brown bow wrapped around the chairs, with big red roses as a centerpiece. The only flowers I’ll have at myw edding are red roses. Tell me what you think? Any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
Congratulations! :) I love your color scheme. I agree that red can be risky so it was a good idea to use mainly brown and creme. I think big red roses will look beautiful as a centerpiece because that way the red wont me too over powering:)

  20. QUESTION:
    my wedding color schemes!?
i want a silver and red wedding but i also want a spring wedding.obviously they dont mesh so what season should i change it to?

  21. QUESTION:
I am having a beach wedding in Florida does anyone have any good ideas for color schemes or flower choice?
I am having my wedding on captiva island. Does anyone have any color ideas for wedding party, flower types, or any other tips?

    • ANSWER:
It sounds a little plain but I like the color green. Not dark green, like an olive tone, It looks beautiful with white. Make sure you pick a dress that kind of fits the whole beach theme, I hate it when people have their wedding on a beach & it looks like they should be in a ballroom. Im not saying walk down the isle in a non-looking wedding dress but just don’t over do it like a 5 foot vail or a big puffy dress with ruffles & a bussle.Your bridsmaids (if any) should follow this rule too & your groom/grooms men should not be it bow ties & tails.

I think you should bring in the beauty of the beach out in your decor, simple things that compliment it like…. An arch but have it covered in green leaves that have a sea weed look with a few flowers speraticlly around it. Just for the seramony
why don’t you go barefoot, it looks really nice in beach weddings. Have your flower girl drop little sea shells anstead of flower peddles (the shells im refering to are like the size of you pinky nail).

I hope this helps, when you decide on a few things come back & post them for more feed back. Good luck & congrats on finding that special someone to spend the rest of your life with!!

  25. QUESTION:
    wedding color?
My wedding is next April Iam having the hardest time coming up with a color Scheme… I like Purple, but not a lavender or barney purple, but somewhere in between, but idk how that will look and what flowers I should put with it and other colors… any suggestions

    • ANSWER:
In my wedding I chose my main color and varigated the color down the line of bridesmaids. For example…my matron of honor wore a burgandy color, next was red, next was a reddish orange, next was orange, and last was yellow. It was very pretty. Purple would be very easy to do that with. Start with a dark purple and then work your way down ending with a light purple. Happy wedding planning!

  26. QUESTION:
I need to make a good wedding scheme color, my favorite color is purple.?
I am getting married March 2009 and I am clueless on putting colors together. I like purples and my fiance likes blue. My wedding dress will be in ivory. I need ideas on how to mix flower colors, bridesmaids dresses, decoration colors etc. Please help!

    • ANSWER:
I did a deep amethyst purple, silver, and white – which (obviously) I thought was beautiful. Ivory could work in that scheme as well.

If your husband to be likes blue, why not do a mix of pale lavender purples, light blues, and ivory? If you stick to mostly those light tones, with a few bolder accents (or even touches of black to accent) it would be a beautiful mix. The awesome thing about these colors, is that if you mix them all up, you can use things in any shade, because blue blends into lavender and purple very well.

Flowers like alstromeria, freesia, irises, hydrangia, delphiniums are all flowers that come in light shades of blue and purple. You could also use tulips, sprigs of lavender … and touches of ivory roses. You can use any of those colors for ribbons to tie the boquets, or if you accent with black, a black ribbon would look striking as well.

You can have the bridesmaids in any shade of those colors – in fact, I’ve seen many weddings where the bride may say “wear lavender or light blue” and the bridesmaids all wear different dresses in those shades, which can be lovely. Either way, you could “tie them together” by telling them all that they will have matching black (or other color) sashes, so they can buy dresses that will look good with a sash.

A couple of links of this color scheme:

  27. QUESTION:
Does anyone have any suggestions for wedding colour schemes?
Me and my fiancee plan on getting married either summer this year or summer next year but we’re struggling on a colour scheme, my fiancee is in the army and has to wear his best dress as a mark of respect, his best dress is navy blue with a red sash, i would really like black, white and red as my colour scheme, but with my fiancee being in navy blue makes this difficult.
Can anyone help me out on a few ideas please??

    • ANSWER:
I understand that he doesn’t have to wear the uniform, but i know not wearing it is a bad idea. I come from a military family and I have a friend who’s getting married in the next few months who is in the military.

You’re lucky that his colors are navy and red, because I definitely think you can pull off what you want and it won’t clash. For example, the wedding cake: White cake, black and blue accents with red flowers scattered around it, or you can have a black and white cake with blue and red flowers around it. Don’t think of white as one of your colors necessarily. Think of it more as an accent. Black, blue, and red are a beautiful color combination, and with the white and maybe use some lighter blues mixed with the navy blues that will create a more summer theme. Your bridesmaids can be red and black (very nice and they’ll be able to use the dresses again that way). A solid red dress with a black ribbon around the waist. OR a black dress with a red ribbon. All up to you. Your centerpieces can be red flowers, dark and light blue flowers, either “black” roses or you can use feathers or beads, anything to get the black across. You can add white flowers to that mix and then tie a white ribbon with black or navy dots around the vase.

Simply, it can be done. I would check out the photos on theknot.com. They have amazing color combinations and will just help you out in planning! Good luck! If you like my ideas, I can be reached at anglwngs626@aim.com. I’m more than willing to help you out. I am planning my own wedding, with my colors being blue, black, and silver. So I understand difficult colors. It’s one thing to visualize colors, and another to make them work in real life. Black has been very difficult, but I’ve made it work. And I have no doubt in my mind that your colors will work!

My fiance doesn’t care about this stuff, so I can do whatever I want!

Some color schemes I’ve been thinking about already are light yellow/grey or baby blue/bright red.

    1. Lots of different shades of Blue, White?

    2. Turquoise, Aqua, Coral, White, Tan (Beach)?

    3. Blue, Pink, Orange, Yellow, White (Sunset)?

    Thanks for the help!
    THE QUESTION IS:

What TYPE or COLOR of FLOWERS should I use with all of these different color schemes???

    • ANSWER:
      1) Choose several of the following: blue delphinium, white larkspur, white lilies, white daisies, white asters, blue iris, white alstromeria, blue Belladonna, white statice

      2) Choose several of the following: Peach gerberas, pastel snapdragons, blue carnations, pastel alstromeria, and some of the white flowers mentioned above

      3) Choose several of the following: Pink, orange and yellow alstromeria, orange and yellow lilies, orange gladioli, orange and pink gerberas, yellow larkspur. (I would leave the blue out of the sunset colors.)

To see what these flowers look like you can go to: http://www.virtualflorist.com and type in the name of the flower to see it in a bouquet with other flowers. I had blue delphinium, pink alstromeria and a white star shaped flower that I can’t remember the name of in my bouquet. I love alstromeria (alternate spelling alstroemeria). It comes in many different colors, is not very expensive and the blooms last a long time.

      Good luck!

  34. QUESTION:
What’s your favorite wedding color scheme?
    I think my favorites are:

    Ice blue/silver or white
    Dark green/silver

What are your favorites, or what was your color scheme for your wedding? :)

    • ANSWER:
My favourite colours are red and black (i know, I know, it sounds terribly gothic doesn’t it).

We had our wedding at a gorgeous little winery with established gardens and views to the ocean. The theme was red, silver and black. Hubby wore a black suit, white shirt and silver tie as did the best man/groomsmen). I wore a red dress with silver crystals and embroidery and my bridesmaids/MOH wore black dresses.

All the men had red roses as buttonholes, and all us girls had red rose bouquets surrounded with black berries and green ivy.

Decorations were nature inspired (due to the setting), lots of roses, willow and ivy curled around posts and winery barrels lined the aisle. We also drapped shimmery red and black mesh over tables etc which looked stunning.

It was fantastic – the rolling green hills and grape vines, the deep blue of the ocean, gorgeous greenery of the gardens with splashes of red, silver and black.

Hi i am having a June 2010 wedding late June and need help on colors i love blues like the bright/metallic blues, pinks, purples, green like the honey brighter.Im just so lost

    • ANSWER:
first, decide if you want to have a theme. for example. i’m having a destination wedding on the beach in jamaica, so my colors are ocean blue, turquoise, and white. if you’re not having a theme, what’s the one color you want to have more than anything? choose that one, then choose colors that compliment them. you mentioned blues. there are many shades, so it’s hard to say exactly which to pair them with. i would choose the shade of blue you like, and maybe a gold/yellow.

      good luck!

  40. QUESTION:
    Color schemes for wedding?
any recommendations i like bright colors and my favorites red?
hopefully this spring coming up so i was thinking pink and red?

    • ANSWER:
Go with the colors that you like. Don’t let someone else influence you. Although if you want your bridesmaids to be happy and want to reuse their dresses on other festive occasions, you could ask them to go dress shopping with you. Show them what you like in the colors you like and then compromise with them. You could go with a nice red and pink combination that should be nice for everyone. Good luck.

  41. QUESTION:

  42. QUESTION:
What silk flowers could be used in a wedding with color scheme of red, white, and blue?
My wedding is on July 18, 2008 and I am having a hard time coming up with what types of flowers to decorate with. I need some ideas (besided red, white, and blue roses or carnations)…

    • ANSWER:
Red and white……if you aren’t careful blue silks tend to look pretty cheap.

Just take a drive to the Garden Ridge or equivilant craft store in your area and walk around. Browse up and down aisles and load the cart with any flower in your colors that catch your eye, then narrow down to a few. What would be good for you will depend on the other details of your wedding like budget, formality, time/date….etc.

The good news about silks is if you see a flower that you like in nature but say it only comes in pink….you can probably find a red silk version.

  43. QUESTION:
    Wedding colour schemes?
I am getting married July 08 and planning my colour scheme. My older bridesmaids (10 and 39) will be in claret (lovely red) and the younger (3 and 4) will be in ivory with a red sash. I am wanting to use Red as my main colour as I am wearing ivory and hoping to carry a delicate bouquet of red roses, the H2B will wear a red cravat with an ivory or ivory with gold detail waistcoat. I am unsure whether to have ivory or gold as my second colour?? My H2B doesn’t want to wear a red rose as his button hole to match my bouquet, but he will wear a cream rose. I am sooo confused !! I want gold but there will not be alot of gold in the wedding itself (we are having civil ceromony with day & eve reception also at same hotel). Would red & ivory look nice together as my colour scheme?

    • ANSWER:
      Hi,

Red and Ivory look nice together – if hubby won’t wear a red rose as button hole how about a red tie to match your bouquet?

I am planning a winter wedding and having a blue/silver theme!

I am getting confused about it all too!

      Stress, stress, stress eh?!

Should the bridal shower and wedding be same color/theme?

I am MOH and I was originally planning on throwing a black/pink/white shower. The bride’s wedding colors are red/black/white. Never having been too many showers or weddings, I started thinking that maybe the two should follow the same color scheme. I have no problem changing to the black/red/white theme.

    Opinions?

That’s actually what my shower and wedding colors were! I had a red, white and black wedding and my shower was pink, black and white. I didn’t want them to be the same because they are two separate things :)
