     Im wearing 2. For a Christmas gift, my sister made a garter for me from the fabric and embellishments from my mother’s, grandmother’s, and fiance’s late mother’s wedding dresses. It was really special, therefore I dont want to throw it to someone else. So Im wearing an additional one to throw.

     Sure, sounds pretty low-risk. Just make a few up, have some fun, then bring them to the local wedding stores, ask if they’ll carry them for you to see how they sell.

     Check the competitive options first. What else is out there that’s non-traditional? Price points? Quality?

   Do people throw wedding garters anymore?
   Its seems like a dated tradition.

   • ANSWER:
     Some people do, but it’s becoming less common and it’s not a tradition that I will be using. No one needs to be putting their hand up my skirt in front of my friends and relatives, and I think it’s pretty tacky to parade all the single people around. I don’t plan on tossing the bouquet either.

   why do women wear garters at their wedding?
   I’ve been reading a book and they were just talking about a wedding.. it said the groom pulled the garter off with his teeth…I don’t get it. What’s the point of wearing a garter besides the groom pulling it off.

     The teeth pulling thing is kind of a sexual innuendo. If you’ve ever seen this done it looks like the groom is doing a little more than pulling off the garter. I’m guessing the tradition goes way way back

   I’m not overweight, but I’m not a rail either…how big is one size fits most? I don’t want to purchase something to find that it fits on my wrist. Not going for the corsage look.

     I ordered mine off ebay, and there were different “sizes” there. I ordered just the standard one, the one size fits most. And it fits fine. They did have a “plus size” one or whatever you want to call it. My jeans size is 11, and my thighs aren’t huge, but like you, im no rail either so a standard should fit! Good luck! Congrats!

   tossing wedding garters?
   the garter set i bought came with 2 garters which one do i toss and which one do i keep for the wedding nite?

     If they are a matching set, the ‘tossing’ garter is usually the thinner one.

     PS You do wear both of them on the day, you just wear the ‘tossing’ garter below the ‘keepsake’ garter, closer to the knee so your new husband knows which one to remove.
     He can remove the ‘keepsake’ one later. )

     Depending on how much you want to spend, the old saying “something blue” could be transformed to every shade of blue you can find. Maybe you could order a whole box full of tiny garters for wedding favors in multiple shades of blue. Each garter would be the size of a napkin ring.

      A Brief History of the Wedding Garter.

      Tossing the wedding garter is an old tradition. It is said that in the days of old the bride and groom had to consummate their marriage. But in order for it to be proven it was common tradition to have people like family and friends come into the room with the couple to witness it. The “witnesses” would obtain the garter as “proof” of the consummation. Also having any article of the under garments was considered to be good luck so sometimes things would get out of hand in the newly wed’s bedroom as crazed onlookers snatched at clothing to get for good luck. This was not appreciated much by the bride nor many grooms, hence the groom started tossing the garter out so that no one would need to obtain it themselves.

      Because of modesty, this tradition has been modified and moved from the bedroom to the reception. Now today we have the traditional garter toss, which is meant to bring good luck to the man who catches it. He is said to be the next one to marry. In some cultures the men stand and wait for the garter to be tossed. Other cultures they actually compete for it. The men may compete for the garter in a foot race or by horse (this is a medieval practice). At least it is better than having the men chase the bride and put her upside down to get the garter off… This is what used to happen! , in yet other places, they even auction the garter off. As strange as these twists on the wedding garter tradition may sound they are all just traditions. Take’ em or leave’ em.

      Traditionally, they’re thrown so the next guy who catches it, gets married next….Same as boquet throw…… I never really thought about what the significance of the garter was, but I can’t imagine a wedding without it!

    Do I wear both garters for my wedding?

      I would definitely wear both. I have a blue one and a white/red one. We are tossing the blue one. What I am going to do is just wear the keepsake one all day with my dress, but right before we do the bouquet toss and the garter toss I am going to have a bridesmaid slide it on my leg. If you are having problems keeping it on you could either pin it to your hose/stockings (if you’re wearing them) or tighten the band up so it don’t slide off. All you would have to do is fold over wear the seam is and hand stitch into place! Good luck!

    Why do you get two garters when you get married?
    When ever I have been in Davids Bridal or a wedding store, garters are always sold in pairs of 2. Why is that?

      basically what anna said.. one is for your husband to throw and the other is for you to keep for memories or pass down into the family. usually the more fancy one is the keeper and the thinner one is to toss…

      well back in the day the garter belt used to actually hold up the stockings a woman wore.
      now its kind of just like a little fun think, like lingerie that the groom gets to pull off at the reception. i think that is the only point really, besides having another piece of memorabilia.
      im not sure what you mean by a traditional garter, but if you wanted one that was unusual you could try looking at Frederick’s of hollywood or something (ones at weddings are a lot of times white to match the dress) or if you know a seamstress you could have one made in your bridal colors etc.

      Honestly this might be hard to find. I am an aspiring fashion designer, and I am positive I could make this is no time and very gorgeous. See if you have any friends who sew, go to a fabric store find what your looking for. Get purple plaid fabric, elastic, lace, jewels for fun, or anything else you want to add. Have fun with it. It would be quite simple!

      It’s at the reception AFTER they are married so they are not “soon-to-bes.” It’s a traditional thing. The husband takes the garter off of his wife’s leg and then tosses it into the air for a group of single men to catch. The man who catches it is said to be the next to marry.

    I know this sounds crazy BUT I still need it! LoL! I am looking for bacon and some kind of laundry charms to add for my wedding garter!       Try going to a family type jewelry store that sells charms. They have books with 1000′s of charms in them, and a lot of those places don’t have online inventories. When I worked at a jewelry store, we had a dealer called “Quality Gold” that had any charm you could think of! Check in with one of those places.

29. QUESTION:
    What is the tradition behind the bride’s garter at a wedding?
    I know that the new husband is supposed to remove his new wife’s garter (worn just above her knee under the wedding dress) as part of the reception, and she’s supposed to throw it (or at least, this is the version I’ve always heard) like the bouquet.

    My question is: why? What is it supposed to symbolize and what happens to the person that catches the garter? Where did the tradition come from, or did us crazy Americans just make it up? Is there a specific color that a bride should wear, such as white is the traditional wedding dress color?

    I’m curious, because I plan to wear a garter at my own wedding, and I want to know why in the world I’m wearing it!

      It’s the same as the bouquet – the groom tosses it to the single men, and the one to catch it is the next to marry.

      Now, don’t forget, after you’ve tossed your bouquet and he’s tossed the garter, the NEXT part of the tradition is the donning of the garter, where the gentleman who caught the garter places it on the leg of the lady who caught the bouquet. It’s generally done with a lot of humor, and some dj’s might encourage them to ham it up by saying something like for every inch above the knee he goes with the garter, it’s one year of happiness for the married couple. This, of course, depends on who catches the bouquet and garter (in other words, if your 12 year old junior bridesmaid catches the bouquet, you’re NOT going to do this!!) and how good their sense of humor is. We did it at my wedding, and it was a hoot – and ironically, the girl who caught my bouquet was the next to marry (and she wasn’t even engaged at the time!).

    Is it bad luck for the groom to see the garter before the wedding?
    I’m not sure if it counts as part of the gown ensemble, in which case it’d be bad luck. But I want to be sure my fiance knows which garter is the tossing garter and which one is to keep, in case they end up sliding closer together during the course of the day. Is it bad luck for him to see it before the wedding?

      I’ve never heard of it being bad luck. But just in case your worried about it I wouldn’t show it to him before hand. Why not show it to him sometime between the ceremony and the reception? I know when my husband and I ran out of the church after the ceremony and onto the limo bus we had a few private minutes to celebrate. You could show it to him them and that way he’ll remember which one it is that he needs to take off. If you show it to him ahead of time chances are he’ll forget by that time any way so this way you don’t have to risk any bad luck and he’ll still get the right garter! Plus I reminded my husband again right before the garter removal and toss that it would be the lower one on my leg that he needed to remove, reminders are key with men lol! Good Luck!!!

      I didn’t show my husband the garter because I had ordered an LA Dodgers garter (it was still my something blue) and wanted to surprise him when he went to take it off. There is no superstition with regard to the groom seeing the garter. If you want to show it to him, go right on ahead.

      I don’t know how true this is – but when I got married I read that traditionally it was good luck to have a part of the brides clothing – so guests used to start pulling the brides clothes apart before she left – the garter was taken off to try and distract the guests so the bride and groom could leave in peace.

      As I said, I don’t know how true that is but these days it is just used as a bit of fun and some people organise a dance between the girl who catches the bouquet and the guy who catches the garter. It is really not essential now days, especially since girls no longer use garters to hold their stockings up (and most girls don’t even wear stockings anymore).

      Timing

      The garter and bouquet tosses generally take place near the end of the reception, either before the cake is cut or just before the couple makes their getaway. The garter is often thrown after the bouquet is tossed, but tradition dictates that the garter toss should come first.

      Doing it Right

      All the single guys should gather around the bride as she sits on a chair. You (the groom) will then lift up her skirt (just a bit) to remove the garter. Tip: The garter is usually placed on the bride’s right leg, just above the knee. Don’t grope aimlessly under 20 layers of tulle; if you can’t find it right away, ask her to help (don’t worry, it’s easier than unclasping a bra).

      Once you’ve located the slippery little critter, ease it off her leg with your hands (not your teeth) and whip it at the men standing behind you. If your bride is of the more modest variety, she may choose to remove the garter herself and demurely hand it to you — then, whip away! The lucky garter-catcher poses for a photo and either dances with the winner of the bouquet toss or slips the garter onto her leg.

    i’m planning my sister’s wedding and trying to come up with fun things to do during the reception. so i was hoping we could do away with the usual bouquet and garter toss and do something fun as an alternative to these. will really appreciate suggestions. thanks!

      An anniversary dance is always fun, and often very touching. Here is how it goes:

      All the couples get out onto the dance floor and start dancing to a slow song. After a minute or so, the DJ asks anyone who has been together less than 24 hours leave the floor….The bride and groom leave the floor.

      The DJ continues….asking couples together less than a year to leave the floor…..then 3 years….5…..10…20….30….and so on, until you are down to the couple who has been together the longest.

      The last couple on the dance floor wins a gift…either a gift basket, a certificate…which can be combined with the bouquet and the garter, if you want. The oldest couple does not do anything with the bouquet/garter…just keep it as a sign of their long commitment to each other, from a newly married couple. I’ve seen couples who have been together up to 60 years…very touching.

      As a side note, I do not like the DJ to say the couples need to be “married couples”…there are many long standing, committed couples who are not married for one reason or another. I don’t think they should be eliminated from participating with this dance. That is just my opinion. Either way, it is a beautiful, dignified way to give a nod to the “Garter and Bouquet” tradition, while honoring the longstanding relationships in your family and friends.

    Our wedding reception is a few months after our wedding, should be still do a garter and bouquet toss?
    We had a destination wedding on May 9th with only immediate family. We are having our official wedding reception on August 15th, I have been tossing the idea of a bouquet and garter toss around in my head, but I don’t know if it would be appropriate so long after the actual wedding.

      There’s an old song called ‘The Stripper’..it’s an instrumental but EVERYBODY knows it when they hear it…like an intro to an old burlesque strip-tease….can’t for the life of me recall the band/orchestra that did it but as the groom is slowly raising the dress that can be played in the background….

    Wedding garter question?
    What is traditional for a wedding garter as far as color? Is it wrong for me to pick a more playful garter (bright color, animal print, etc.) instead of a white one?
