It might not be your special day but you still want to look and feel great from day to night at that wedding youve been invited to, but its also important that you are comfortable as well because its going to be a long day and you need something that will see you from a formal daytime meal through to an evening of dancing.

When shopping for a new wedding guest outfit dont be tempted to buy the first thing you see, have a look around first and weigh up your options; youll either see something much more suitable or youll decide your first choice was right, and wheres the fun in just buying the first outfit you see?

      It’s considered wrong to wear all black as black is associated with funerals, although you can get away with it if you dress it up with brightly coloured accessories.

      It’s frowned up to wear all white as traditionally the bride wears all white and you could be mistaken for the bride, or seen as though you were competing with her for attention.

      To wear a mixture of the two is absolutely fine.

      First of all the dress is gorgeous. i love it very very pretty. i guess it depends on how you think the bride will react. it’s not like you’re wearing a wedding dress to the wedding. plus it has a nice dark print on it, no one is going to confuse you for the bride. lol If you know the bride i would ask her if you could wear this dress to her wedding, just because i don’t know how she would react.

      What i would do is dress in some sort of color maybe a seasonal color. Also don’t go formal but don’t go casual more like nice cocktail. I would go with a dress that is to your knees.

    How short is too short for a guest of a wedding dress?
    My dress is an A-line shift dress with cap sleaves. It sits above my mid thigh. I’d say it’s a mini-dress. If I bend over of reach for something it’s quite revae. I’m also concerned because it’s an outdoor beach wedding, and the wind could whip it up.

    Whats an appropriate wedding guest dress?
    I’m attending my friend’s wedding tomorrow. I dont go to very many weddings and I’m not sure what is good guest attire. I got a strapless red dress with a black belt thing in the middle. It also bunches a little at the bottom. Its at lest a couple of inches above my knees, and I got black tights and closed toe black shoes to wear with it. But now im second guessing the dress.       The dress itself if find, just don’t wear black tights. Wear neutral tights if you need to for the cold. And also wear a bolero (mini-sweater, they are cute) to help with keeping warm

      I wouldn’t have worn a white dress to someone else’s wedding that is just tacky in my opinion. I understand being pregnant and uncomfortable. I have 2 kids and went to weddings while pregnant with each one of them, but I never wore a white dress (even if my white dress was more comfortable) I wore something else in a different color. This is just my opinion, take it or leave it.

      I think its cute! I like it, and I would wear something like that.
      It’s okay to wear Black and white dresses, the only rule if that you should avoid an all white dress (save that for the bride).

      but unless you have huge boobs that will be sticking out or you are super tall and the dress will barely cover you, then i think its totally fine and appropriate.

      short dresses are everywhere now, and if you like it, wear it. if you want to cover up a little, there is nothing wrong with wearing a shawl around your shoulders– buts its not necessary.

      It depends on the theme. Some invitations say the kind of attire guests should wear. If it didn’t indicate “don’t wear black”, it’s possibly safe that you may wear that color. A fashion advice though, bring a clutch or bag or scarf in a different color other than black. :)

      As a bride when I got married, I’d rather see some of my guests wear black dresses than seeing someone who is underdressed…coz I had one guest who looked like going to a children’s party because aside from the colorful polka dots on her dress, it was not totally a dress at all. And it made me frown. Yeah, I’d rather see a stylish black dress indeed!

    My wife is looking at designer labels and finding “deals” for several hundred dollars. I see nice summer dresses (think July in Iowa) at ae.com and other such sites for a lot less. Am I a prude?

      I don’t think AE is “formal” enough… But, she also doesn’t need designer dresses…

      She should go to her local dept. stores… JCPenny, Sears, Macy’s, etc. Especially around Prom. They will have an assortment of gowns that are very nice and under 0.

      The most I spent on a dress that i was wearing to a wedding as a guest was . And I thought that was a stretch for me… But, I figured I can wear it to many weddings to come… And this was at a store called Von Maur.

    I’m going to my aunties wedding in a couple months, there’s no rush but I can’t find the perfect dress. Basically I’m looking for a black, lolita like dress that’s good and cheap. 35 euros max.     Ok so I have a wedding to go to next weekend. The dress I am wearing does not have sleeves. It is a very formal cocktail dress. Ivory silk on top and at waist and below is black. The top of the dress wraps around my neck with pretty black beading. It’s a silky material. Is it ok beings that it is summer to wear black sheer stockings?       I’m from the old school. No ivory, you’re competing with the bride. Black is for funerals. Wear something that is not too dressy and doesn’t have those 2 colors. It’s her day. Yes, wear stockings.

    I’m looking for a dress to wear to a wedding in Amsterdam this winter (December 23rd). It’s a daytime wedding, but since I don’t live there, I’m not sure that I have a chance to change my clothes prior to the dinner and after-party, so it would need to work for all three occasions. The wedding’s going to be pretty formal, so I want my dress to go no shorter than knee length, but probably not longer, since I’m not a bridesmaid.       Can you give a little more detail than polka dots?

      It depends, you should take your cues from the bridesmaids dresses (length, material, color hue), If you dont know what those dresses look like, find of what the mothers of the bride/groom are wearing– Are your shoulders covered (in a place of worship)
      Kids usually have a little more leeway.

      Can I be honest?

      I see several potential problems

      1. It’s strapless and short. That is not really appropriate wedding attire. In fact, if the wedding in in a church, you may not be allowed in.
      2. It’s quite bright in that photo. If it’s even close to that bright in person, it’s going to be way too much, even with heels & tights.

      This looks more like something Megan Fox would wear to a movie premiere, not something one would wear to a wedding.

      Remember that the wedding is about the bride. You have to respect that or risk alienating your FI’s entire family.

      I’m not saying to dress like a frump, but if this is an event for your BF’s family, it’s better to be slightly conservative than overly flamboyant.

    The weather is supposed to be cool tomorrow – high of 50. I am attending an outdoor/indoor wedding as a guest. I am not close to the bride or groom, they are simply friends of my boyfriend. I only have one cold weather-ish dress available – it is 50/50 black and red. Are these colors going to be appropriate? In addition, I plan on wearing a knee length black dress coat, and black heels with straps. Is this alright as well, or is my outfit too dark?

      Totally appropriate. Fall and Winter call for deep, rich colors. And you don’t want to have to wear a little sundress and risk getting sick!

      Odds are, lots of folks will be dressed in black…that isn’t really a faux pas anymore.

      I think it would ok. Anything seems to go these days.
      Actually the dress you describe sounds very familiar…..I just saw some pictures of a wedding my friend went to …(night wedding) and a girl in the picture had a similar dress on. If it is the same one it is very pretty…wear it proud and just have fun!!!
      It is not like you are wearing something inappropriate.

    How do I make this casual dress wedding-guest appropriate?

    to wear to a garden wedding in a tropical location. The wedding is semi-formal for the guests, mid-day (2:00), so nothing too fancy needs to be worn, however, I feel as though just the dress alone is a bit too casual. Anybody have any ideas how I can glam it up a bit? I’m thinking no spiked heels (they’ll sink into the garden grass), but flats are too casual, so that clearly leaves wedge heels, which I rarely wear, so I’m looking for help finding some of those or any other types of shoes that seem appropriate.

    Also, jewelry, belt, any other accessories? Just trying to make this a bit dressier than it is and wedding appropriate. Thank you!

      No belt that will make it more casual, nice jewelry nothing that looks like obvious costume jewelry keep it light and sparkly not heavy. I would consider a nice hat, something with a wide brim that looks fancy or a nice hairpiece with jewels in it. Put your hair at least partially up to make it looks less casual.       I think a cardigan will again make it more casual try a pashmina ( or sheer wrap) instead, they are considered more formal. Please do not wear a tank top to a wedding, especially under a dress you are trying to dress up.

      Lots of worn once bridal dresses in consignment shops and thrift store, really and they are beautiful and inexpensive. Check them out. With a little alterations, convert a bridal dress to a lovely prom dress. You might want to reconsider waring this type of dress to a wedding as a guest. Only one “bridal dress” per wedding and it should not be a guest!
      With the $$ you save on your prom dress, you might be able to purchase a second dress, more like a cocktail dress or a bridesmaid dress. Think about it.
